HOW TO USE THIS DOCUMENT

This file, README.TXT, is stored on your Microsoft Word 97/Excel 97 In-Depth Training Starts Here CD-ROM. To view the Readme file on-screen in Windows Notepad, maximize the Notepad window, and click Word Wrap on the Edit menu. To print the Readme file, open it in Notepad or another word-processing program, and click Print on the File menu.

1. PRODUCT DEFINITION:

Microsoft Word 97/Excel 97 In-Depth Training Starts Here is a multimedia training CD-ROM designed to cover all the material required to pass the Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) certification exams for Microsoft Word 97 or Microsoft Excel 97. Animated lessons, step-by-step practice, and self-assessment quizzes create an easy and flexible learning environment. In Starts Here, you work directly in the programs that you are learning in real-time.

2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

Multimedia PC with a Pentium 75MHz or higher processor
Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 with Internet Explorer 4.0 
At least 16 MB RAM
At least 12 MB of available hard disk space - more will be required (approximately 85 MB) if you are installing Internet Explorer 4.01
Double-speed CD-ROM drive or faster
Super VGA display with 256 colors or better
Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
Windows-compatible sound board and headphones or speakers

Windows NT users: You must be using Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or greater. Service Pack 3 is included on the Microsoft Word 97/Excel 97 In-Depth Training Starts Here CD ROM, or visit the Windows NT Web Site at http://www.microsoft.com/windows for information on the latest Service Pack.

3. INSTALLATION TIPS:
------------------
Microsoft Word 97/Excel 97 In-Depth Training Starts Here assumes that Microsoft Windows has some specific options set on your computer. Here are some things to check to ensure that you have everything set up properly to run the lessons:

>>>To hear audio, you must have the Windows Audio Compression Codecs installed. To install these codecs:

1. Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar. 
2. Point to Settings.
3. Click Control Panel.
4. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
5. Click the Windows Setup tab.
6. Click the word Multimedia in the Components box. (You may need to scroll to see this componentin the list.)
7. Click the Details button.
8. Select the Audio Compression check box.
9. Click the OK button.
10. Click the OK button, and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you are running Starts Here over a network, and your security settings for the Local intranet zone are set to High (most secure), Starts Here will not function properly. Your security settings for the Local intranet zone must be set to Medium (more secure) or lower to use Starts Here over a network. Please see your network administrator before changing these security settings.

If you would like to print some of these lesson files, you must be connected to a printer.  You may notice improper page layout on some dot-matrix printers.

Autorun may not work on some CD changers.

>>>To manually install Starts Here:

1. Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar. 
2. Point to Programs, and click Windows Explorer.
3. Locate the Starts Here CD-ROM, and click it to display the files it contains.
4. Double-click the Starts Here setup program (SETUP.EXE) to run it.

For users of Banyan Vines Networks, you may encounter the following error message during setup: "Setup was unable to determine a valid default destination folder. Specify a different destination folder."

>>>To specify a different destination folder:

1. Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar. 
2. Point to Programs, and click Windows Explorer.
3. On the File menu, point to New, and click Folder.
2. Type the name of the new folder where you will install Starts Here.
3. Run the Starts Here setup program.
4. When prompted for the Destination Folder during the Starts Here setup, click Browse, and select the folder you just created.
 
For users of IBM ThinkPads:
Microsoft Word 97/Excel 97 In-Depth Training Starts Here will not work on IBM ThinkPad computers. There is a problem with the ThinkPad not being able to read non-ISO 9660 compliant CD-ROMs.

If you are having problems with the videos in Starts Here:
Some video cards are not compatible with DirectX, which is used to play videos in Starts Here. If you experience problems with video in Starts Here, your video card may be incompatible with the latest version of DirectX. Check with your hardware manufacturer for an updated driver.

If you are having audio problems:
If you are experiencing no audio or poor quality audio, you may need updated drivers. Check with your hardware manufacturer or visit the Microsoft DirectX Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/directx/ for more information.

4. KNOWN ISSUES:

INSTALLING STARTS HERE WHEN INERNET EXPLORER 4.0 IS ALREADY INSTALLED
If the user has IE 4.0 installed on their machine (not IE 4.01) and they refuse to update to IE 4.01, they will be presented with a confusing error message. "You must have Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later installed on your computer to run Starts Here"
EXPECTED RESULTS:
The user has IE 4.0 installed, but they are told that they need 4.0 or later.  Message should read, "... Internet Explorer 4.01 or..." instead.
WORKAROUND:
Ignore error message.

Starts Here may not install or run correctly on NT 5.0 Beta 1.

To visit Microsoft's Web site you will need access to the Internet. If you are not connected to the Internet through a network, you will need to install Dial-Up Networking in order to connect. 

>>>To install Dial-Up Networking:

1. Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar. 
2. Point to Settings.
3. Click Control Panel.
4. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
5. Click the Windows Setup tab.
6. Click the word Communications in the Components box.
7. Click the Details button.
8. Select the Dial-Up Networking check box.
9. Click the OK button. 
10. Click the OK button, and follow the on-screen setup instructions.
