This program is about TIMING ACCURACY. Ear Steady has a graphical
representation of how close to the beat you are and gives a more
precise reading than using a metronome.
To load the program just go to the Ear Power folder and click on
the Ear Steady icon. Select a tempo in beats per minute from the
slider control and then click on the metronome button which will
give you a quarter note click at the tempo you specified. By tapping
the computer keyboard or your MIDI instrument in time, once the
metronome click starts, you can see whether you are on the beat,
ahead of the beat or behind the beat.. The green light flashes in
the center of the screen if you are precisely on the beat, the red
or yellow lights to the left of the green light will flash on if you
are ahead of the beat and the red or yellow lights to the right of the
green light will flash on if you are behind the beat.
The metronome can also be turned off in which case you have to create
your own rhythmic pulse at the tempo set on the screen.
When the metronome is turned off, just start tapping the computer
keyboard or MIDI keyboard as close to the tempo specified
(you will have to take an educated guess) and you will see whether
you are on the beat, early or late and then you can adjust the rhythm
of your tapping accordingly. If you are early then you should slow
down the taps and if you are late then you should speed up the taps.
The basic count or beat is considered the quarter note, so each
division (each flashing light) from the screen will be a 1/32 beat.
One quarter note beat is made up of eight 32nd beats. For each note
played you can see how far it is from the original pulse, so you can
adjust your speed accordingly.
The object is to keep a steady rhythmic feel by being perfectly on the
beat which, by using this approach you will develop over time with
practice.
Every musician needs to have an excellent sense of time whether they
are playing with other musicians or by themselves and this program
offers a fantastic way of developing this technique.
