WARNING !!!

NOTICE: The use of ANY computer security software program is potentially DANGEROUS if not done with care. You must read ALL the StormWindows documentation thoroughly BEFORE using StormWindows on your PC.

BEWARE: Careless OR incorrect use of this software could possibly lock YOU out of your own computer. IF you are NOT willing to use this software VERY carefully, heeding ALL warnings in this documentation, then you MUST uninstall StormWindows and proceed NO further.

StormWindows should be UNinstalled through Control Panel. This will remove the StormWindows files and the changes that the Setup program made to your system. NOTE, however, that the uninstallation may NOT be able to undo all of the changes that YOU yourself may have made to your PC by the use of StormWindows after it was installed, so please DO remember that YOU must undo ALL protections BEFORE you proceed to uninstall StormWindows.

Overview of StormWindows

StormWindows is a security utility that allows the authorized user to add several types and degrees of protection to the desktop and system of a Windows NT computer. Intelligent use of StormWindows security measures will allow for the controlled use of any shared Windows NT computer.

Please note that StormWindows may ONLY be installed and may ONLY be accessed while logged in with Administrator Group privileges.

Access to StormWindows

StormWindows may be accessed by clicking on its icon on the Start Menu, or by double-clicking on its icon on the desktop or on its icon in Control Panel.

StormWindows may also be accessed through the Start Menu by entering "STORMWIN" (not case-sensitive) on the Command Line in the Run Command dialog box, or by searching for "STORMWIN.EXE" (also not case-sensitive) in the Find Command dialog box.

Note that you MUST remember the correct StormWindows password, as you will absolutely NOT be able to start StormWindows without it.

Please note that StormWindows may ONLY be installed and may ONLY be accessed while logged in with Administrator Group privileges.

CAUTION: It is very important that you do not remove any means of access to StormWindows without very careful thought. Since StormWindows is password-protected, there is no reason to "hide" it from users, and you must be able to access StormWindows easily in order to change security settings. This is very important. It is highly recommended that you maintain at least TWO means of access to StormWindows at all times.

Security Strategy

It should be obvious that the use of just any one security measure is not likely to provide much actual security in any particular setting, and that a carefully chosen combination of complementary security measures will be required for most circumstances.

It should also be clear that it would be almost impossible for Cetus Software to provide one single set of recommendations that could provide optimum security under all circumstances. Each situation is different, and each therefore requires its own individual security plan. Nonetheless, Cetus Software does recommend that the following measures be considered when planning any effective security strategy:

Cetus Software recommends that serious thought be given to removing access to Windows NT Explorer. A guest user with even moderate Windows savvy will know how to get past many security measures simply by using this tool to "explore". Cetus Software does recommend disabling ALL means of access to Explorer (which is still available to the authorized user through StormWindows, of course), though it is clear that it will not always be possible to do this in every situation.

Cetus Software STRONGLY recommends the use of the three Registry Security settings on the StormWindows System page. Activating the settings for No Registry Editor, No System Policy Editor, and No Registry Merging will prevent a guest user from attempting to circumvent StormWindows protections.

Cetus Software also recommends the use of a well chosen password, one that could NEVER be guessed by any guest user, one that employs an uncommon combination of letters, numbers, and punctuation. Avoid the use of institutional names, first names, last names, nicknames, names of spouses, names of children, names of pets, birthdates, or any other simple password that would be likely be tried by any "adventurous" guest user. Unfortunately, any password that is very easily remembered is probably also a password that is easily guessed at.

Main Commands

StormWindows, to the right of the individual property pages in its main window, provides command buttons for several functions that affect StormWindows and/or Windows itself.

Commands for StormWindows

ABOUT STORMWINDOWS will display information about StormWindows (version number and copyright) and Cetus Software (postal, email, and Web site addresses, and telephone and fax numbers).

STORMWINDOWS HELP will access StormWindows on-line Help.

IMPORT SETTINGS may be used to import all checkbox security settings from a diskette in Drive A:, or from any other location chosen by the user, allowing the authorized user to synchronize checkbox settings on several computers automatically. (Note that the listbox contents of the two Programs Pages are NOT imported.)

EXPORT SETTINGS may be used to export all checkbox security settings to a diskette in Drive A:, or to any other location chosen by the user, allowing the authorized user to easily transport a protection scheme to other computers. (Note that the listbox contents of the two Programs Pages are NOT exported.)

UNPROTECT NOW may be used to temporarily and quickly remove all checkbox protection settings, for installing software, modifying the desktop configuration, etc. (Note that the listbox contents of the two Programs Pages are NOT affected by this command.)

REPROTECT NOW may be used to restore all previous checkbox protection settings in place at the time the Unprotect Now function was used. (Note that the listbox contents of the two Programs Pages are NOT affected by this command.)

EXIT STORMWINDOWS will exit from StormWindows. CAUTION: Any changes made since starting StormWindows WILL be saved. (If you wish to cancel any changes made, you must do so individually before exiting StormWindows.)

NOTE - The Import, Export, Unprotect Now, and Reprotect Now functions do NOT affect, NOR are affected by, the contents of the various listboxes on the Programs Page. (These functions only involve the checkbox settings on all the other pages.)

Commands for Windows

Since many protection changes provided by StormWindows require Windows to be restarted before they take effect, StormWindows provides for both restarting of Windows and shutting down the computer (for later restart); this shutdown access is also useful if you wish to use the StormWindows No Shutdown Command setting.

RESTART WINDOWS will exit StormWindows and restart Windows, so that any StormWindows changes made may take full effect immediately. CAUTION: Any changes made since starting StormWindows WILL be saved. (If you wish to cancel any changes made, you must do so individually before exiting StormWindows and restarting Windows.)

SHUT DOWN COMPUTER will exit StormWindows and shut down the computer, so that any StormWindows changes made may take effect the next time Windows is run. CAUTION: Any changes made since starting StormWindows WILL be saved. (If you wish to cancel any changes made, you must do so individually before exiting StormWindows and restarting the computer.)

Desktop Page

StormWindows, in its Desktop page, allows you to restrict access to many Windows NT desktop features and commands.

CAUTION: Many of these restrictions can be dangerous if not used with care. Consider carefully the impact of each of these desktop restrictions before invoking it. Do not remove any means of access to StormWindows without first making certain that you still have other ways of starting StormWindows. This is important.

Start Menu Restrictions

NO RUN COMMAND will disable access to the Run command on the Start Menu. CAUTION: Do make absolutely certain that you still have some other means of access to StormWindows (such as a functioning Start Menu icon) before disabling normal access to the Run command. This is very important.

NO FIND COMMAND will disable access to the Find command on the Start Menu. CAUTION: Do make absolutely certain that you still have some other means of access to StormWindows (such as a functioning Start Menu icon) before disabling normal access to the Find command. This is very important.

NO SHUT DOWN COMMAND will disable access to the Shut Down command on the Start Menu. CAUTION: Do make certain that you still have access to StormWindows (for its access to the Shut Down command) by some means (such as a functioning Start Menu icon) before disabling normal access to the Shut Down command. This is very important.

NO CONTROL PANEL OR PRINTERS will remove access to both the Control Panel and the Printers folder in Start Menu Settings and in My Computer.

NO SETTINGS TASKBAR will remove access to the Taskbar Properties dialog in Start Menu Settings.

NO DOCUMENTS MENU will remove access to documents through the Documents Menu.

Shell Restrictions

NO FILE MENU IN EXPLORER will cause the File Menu to be removed from Explorer.

NO RIGHT-CLICK IN/ON EXPLORER will prevent the opening up of context menus by right-clicking both in the Explorer application as well as on the desktop portion of the Explorer shell.

NO RIGHT-CLICK ON TASKBAR will prevent the opening up of context menus by right-clicking on the taskbar.

NO TASK MANAGER will prevent Task Manager from running.

NO SAVE SPATIAL SETTINGS will prevent certain desktop changes (such as the rearrangement of desktop icons) from being saved by the system.

NO DESKTOP ICONS OR ACCESS will remove all icons from the desktop, as well as preventing the use of the right mouse button on the desktop. CAUTION: Do make absolutely certain that you still have some other means of access to StormWindows (such as a functioning Start Menu icon) before removing access to desktop icons. This is very important.

My Programs and Our Programs Pages

There are two StormWindows Programs pages. My Programs is for control over program folders and individual program links that are assigned to you, as an individual user, while Our Programs is for program folders and links that are generally available to all users on the computer. Both pages share the same features.

The current status of each individual Windows program link (those with the ".lnk" suffix) or DOS PIF file (those with the ".pif" suffix), as well as each program folder (those without any suffix), is displayed in the two listboxes on each of the three property sheets on each of the two Programs Pages.

The VISIBLE PROGRAMS listboxes will display the individual program links and program folders that are currently accessible through Start Menu Programs and Start Menu Proper. Note that the Startup folder in Start Menu Programs may not be hidden, as Windows will create a new, empty Startup folder the next time Windows is started.

The HIDDEN PROGRAMS listboxes will display the individual program links and program folders that have been removed from Start Menu Programs and Start Menu Proper by StormWindows.

The VISIBLE ICONS listbox will display the individual program links and program folders that are currently available as desktop icons. Note that Windows will not allow the My Computer system icon to be hidden without hiding all desktop icons by using the No Desktop Icons or Access command.

The HIDDEN ICONS listbox will display the desktop icons that have been removed from the desktop by StormWindows.

NOTE - The Import, Export, Unprotect Now, and Reprotect Now functions do NOT affect, NOR are affected by, the contents of the various listboxes on the two Programs Pages. (Those functions only involve the checkbox settings on all the other pages.)

Hiding Programs and Icons

The HIDE command will remove a selected program from Start Menu Programs, Start Menu Proper, or from the desktop, on both Programs Pages.

CAUTION: Do make absolutely certain that you still have some other means of access to StormWindows before removing access to any StormWindows menu item or icon by using the Hide function on any of the two Programs Pages property sheets. This is very important.

The HIDE command may be invoked by:

1. selecting a program in a Visible Programs listbox or the Visible Icons listbox and then using the Hide command button.

2. double-clicking on any program in a Visible Programs listbox or the Hidden Icons listbox.

NOTE - The Import, Export, Unprotect Now, and Reprotect Now functions do NOT affect, NOR are affected by, the contents of the various listboxes on the Programs Page. (These functions only involve the checkbox settings on all the other pages.)

Note that StormWindows will NOT allow the Startup folder in Start Menu Programs to be hidden, because Windows will create a new, empty Startup folder the next time Windows is started.

Note that Windows will NOT allow the My Computer system icon to be hidden without hiding all desktop icons by using the No Desktop Icons or Access command.

Showing Programs and Icons

The SHOW command will restore a selected hidden program to Start Menu Programs, Start Menu Proper, or to the desktop, on both Programs Pages.

The SHOW command may be invoked by:

1. selecting a program in a Hidden Programs listbox or the Hidden Icons listbox and then using the Show command button.

2. double-clicking on any program in a Hidden Programs listbox or the Hidden Icons listbox.

NOTE - The Import, Export, Unprotect Now, and Reprotect Now functions do NOT affect, NOR are affected by, the contents of the various listboxes on the Programs Page. (These functions only involve the checkbox settings on all the other pages.)

Opening Programs and Icons

The OPEN command will open an Explorer-like window to a selected program group, or will open or execute a selected program link, on the three property sheets on each of the two Programs Pages.

The OPEN command may be invoked with either of the two Open command buttons on the any one of the three property sheets on each of the two Programs Pages.

The Open command button to the left is for programs displayed in the Visible Programs or Icons listboxes, while the Open button to the right is for programs in the Hidden Programs or Icons listboxes.

Note that certain of the various desktop system icons (such as My Computer or Recycle Bin) may not be opened from a Programs Page.

System Page

StormWindows, in its System page, allows you to restrict access to several sensitive Windows NT system characteristics and functions.

The System page also allows you to control to a great extent (primarily in the area of Registry security) the amount of security afforded to StormWindows itself.

Registry Security

NOTE: The use of these three commands is HIGHLY recommended for preventing guest users from attempting to circumvent StormWindows protection measures.

NO REGISTRATION EDITOR will prevent access to the Windows NT Registration Editor. CAUTION: Do make certain that you still have access to StormWindows (for its own access to the Registration Editor) by some means (such as a functioning Start Menu icon) before disabling normal access to the Registration Editor. This is very important.

NO SYSTEM POLICY EDITOR will prevent access to the Windows NT System Policy Editor, whether installed on the computer's hard drive or carried to it on a floppy diskette.

NO REGISTRY MERGING will prevent merging of .REG files into the Registry. CAUTION: This checkbox must be UNchecked before installing any new software, since some setup programs may utilize merging to update the System Registry with new settings. This is very important.

Printers Control Panel

NO ADDITION OF PRINTERS will disable the installation of additional printers.

NO DELETION OF PRINTERS will disable the deletion of installed printers.

Display Page

StormWindows, in its Display page, allows you to restrict access to many aspects of the Windows NT screen display, as well as which drives are displayed in My Computer and (in most cases) in Explorer.

Display Control Panel

NO DISPLAY CONTROL PANEL will disable access to the Display option in Control Panel.

NO BACKGROUND PAGE will hide the Background properties of the Display option in Control Panel.

NO SCREENSAVER PAGE will hide the Screensaver properties of the Display option in Control Panel.

NO APPEARANCE PAGE will hide the Appearance properties of the Display option in Control Panel.

NO SETTINGS PAGE will hide the Settings properties of the Display option in Control Panel.

Network Neighborhood

NO ENTIRE NETWORK will hide access to the Entire Network in Network Neighborhood.

NO WORKGROUP CONTENTS will prevent workgroup contents from being displayed in Network Neighborhood.

Drives in My Computer

NO DRIVES IN MY COMPUTER will hide access to individual drives in My Computer (and, in most cases, in Explorer). Usually, when a drive is hidden in My Computer, that drive is also hidden in Explorer; the exception is the C: drive, which usually is not hidden in Explorer.

CAUTION: Do make absolutely certain that you still have some other means of access to StormWindows (such as a functioning Start Menu icon) before removing drives from My Computer. This is very important.

Password Page

StormWindows, in its Passwords page, allows you to change StormWindows' own password.

The initial StormWindows password upon installation is "xxxx" (NOT case-sensitive). You MUST change this to a private password of your own choice (4 to 20 characters) as soon as possible.

Note that you MUST remember the password, as you will absolutely NOT be able to start StormWindows without it. This is VERY IMPORTANT !!!

Open... Page

StormWindows, in its Open... page, allows you to open up various Windows programs and features (whether still visible, or hidden by StormWindows).

(Please note that, depending on the severity of restrictions in place at any one time, not every function on the Open... page will be available.)

OPEN MY COMPUTER will open a My Computer window, usually even if otherwise hidden by StormWindows.

OPEN DESKTOP will open an Explorer-like window to icons that are present on the Desktop, or would be present on the desktop if the No Desktop Icons or Access command was not in effect.

OPEN CONTROL PANEL will open a Control Panel window, usually even if otherwise hidden by StormWindows.

OPEN PRINTERS will open the Printers folder, usually even if otherwise hidden by StormWindows.

OPEN REGISTRY will open Windows NT Registration Editor. CAUTION !!! - Do NOT edit the Registry at all if you do not know exactly what you are doing. Registry changes are immediate and not always reversible, and can even prevent your computer from running.

OPEN PROGRAM MANAGER will open Windows NT 3.51 Program Manager. (The "old" Windows NT 3.51 Program Manager is automatically installed by Windows NT, and may be still be useful for certain functions and for accessing programs.)

OPEN FILE MANAGER will open Windows NT 3.51 File Manager. (The "old" Windows NT 3.51 File Manager is automatically installed by Windows NT, and is capable of handling certain tasks that Windows NT Explorer cannot do.)

OPEN EXPLORER will open Windows NT Explorer (allowing access to Explorer by the authorized user, even if normal means of access to Explorer may have been removed).

Uninstalling StormWindows

StormWindows should be UNinstalled through Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs icon) . This will remove the StormWindows files and the changes that the Setup program made to your system files.

Note, however, that any uninstallation may NOT be able to undo all of the changes that YOU yourself may have made to your PC by the use of StormWindows AFTER it was installed, so please DO remember that YOU must undo ALL protections BEFORE you proceed to uninstall StormWindows.

Shareware Evaluation

A limited license is granted by Cetus Software to any individual user or institution to install and test a shareware copy of StormWindows on ONE computer for a 25-DAY evaluation period. At the end of this trial period, StormWindows MUST be removed from that computer. It is expressly PROHIBITED to install a shareware copy of StormWindows on MULTIPLE computers under ANY condition.
