NOTES ON UPGRADING ULTRABAC:

. Before attempting to upgrade, ensure that the "BEI Scheduler" service
   is not running. Run Control Panel, then select the Services applet.
   Locate "BEI Scheduler", highlight it, and if the status is "running",
   click the 'stop' button. Proceed with the instructions below.

IMPORTANT: UltraBac will ONLY run on NT 3.51 and above.

To install UltraBac on NT Workstation/Server:

. Log on as a user with administrative privilege

. Run SETUP.EXE from the diskette

.  Follow on-screen instructions

. When UltraBac is first run it will create the "BEI Scheduler" service
   and request a user id and password. It is recommended that you allow
   the UltraBac user to be created as this account will be created
   automatically with all the correct permissions required.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR USERS OF IDE REMOVEABLE DISK DEVICES:
========================================================

Some IDE removeable devices incorrectly notify NT that they are fixed
disk devices. If NT Explorer does not indicate that the drive is
removeable, you should contact the drive's manufacturer and ask for a
firmware update for the drive. You should run at least SP5 for NT3.51
or SP2 for NT4.0.

NEW FEATURES IN RELEASE 4.1
===========================

. Windows95 Agent added. Please see ULTRABAC\WIN95\README.TXT for
   more information.

. UltraVue has been enhanced to automatically get the last status
   written to the eventlog for each UltraBac server. Browsing of
   UltraBac messages written to the log is also possible.

. Image backup option added. Please see ULTRABAC\RECOVER\README.TXT
   for important information. Ability to restore individual files
   and directories added with virtual disk mount driver.

NEW FEATURES IN RELEASE 4.0
===========================

. Support for backing up/restoring NT 4.0 registry information.

. "BEI Scheduler" Service installation has been improved, and will now
   install on a machine in a workgroup without generating error messsages

. During installation UltraBac icons will be placed in the "Start Menu"
   when running NT 4.0

. If an abnormal numbers of errors are detected during backup of a
   particular set, the remainder of the set will be automatically skipped.
   This stops a set taking an enormous amount of time when the remote
   computer is no longer available. The default number of errors that
   must be detected before skipping is 100 -- this is set in the registry
   at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BEI\UltraBac\MaximumErrorsPerSet which
   is a REG_DWORD value. Note that this value needs to be added if you
   want to override the default value 100. Regular errors such as sharing
   violations, file/path not found errors do not count toward the 100 limit.

. A limitation has been removed where a group file (.ubb) could not have
   a space character in the filename. This was because the space
   character was being used as the delimiter between fields. UltraBac
   now can accept the double-quote (") character as the delimeter, and
   this is automatically used by the scheduler service, which allows space
   characters in the names of the .UBB files. The set filenames (.UB)
   have never had this limitation. An example using the command line:
   c:\ultrabac\ub.exe /s "test group.ubb"

KNOWN ISSUES
============

. Because UltraBac 4.0 is a major update, existing license information
   for versions 2.x will not be valid, necessitating re-licensing the
   software with BEI. If you would like to install the evaluation license
   information, copy the ultrabac.dat from the installation media to the
   UltraBac directory.

. In order to use the SQL Agent, you must install the SQL client software,
   and run the SQL Client Configuration utility to select "Named Pipes" as
   the transport. You MUST run SQL Security Manager and ensure that accounts
   that need to backup SQL databases (including the UltraBac account used by
   the scheduler service) are setup as "sa" equivalents. This is because
   UltraBac demands a "Trusted Connection" when logging onto SQL to enhance
   security. It is also necessary to register the SQL Servers with
   the SQL Enterprise Manager program.

. Exchange Backup: The account that runs the "BEI Scheduler" service,
   usually "UltraBac" must be defined to Exchange and setup as an Exchange
   Administrator in order for unattended Exchange backups to occur. You
   must install the Exchange Administrator program on the UltraBac host
   machine in order to perform Exchange backups. Service Pack 3 for Exchange
   has been known to break the agent, and Microsoft have made available a
   hotfix (EDBBCLI.ZIP) to correct the problem.

. Backing up remote NT 3.51 clients whilst running NT 4.0 (b1381) will
   cause an error 3 (The system cannot find the path specified) during
   the backup of the remote event logs. This has been confirmed as a
   bug by Microsoft and was fixed by ServicePack 2 for NT 4.0.

. If you receive Error 5 when loading entries for a set for a specific
   directory, then you will need to get SP2 for NT 4.0 as this bug was fixed
   in SP2.

FEATURES ADDED IN RELEASE 2.4
=============================

.  Online Help.

. Compare to disk option added for verify. In addition to checking the
   32-bit CRC value during verification, the data on the media is read
   and compared byte-by-byte to the original file. This is much slower
   than a normal verification, and it will report files that have
   changed in-between backup and verify as possible errors. This option
   is set in the Preferences/Backup dialog, and also in "Options" for
   each backup group.

. Exchange and SQL may now be backed up online, without stopping the
   services beforehand. These options are an additional charge.

. The account specified when installing the BEI Scheduler can now be
   automatically created.

. UltraVue now has the ability to pause a backup in progress.

. UltraBac now creates shares to the data, index, and log paths
   automatically. These are used by the UltraVue remote management
   utility.

. UltraBac now has a statistics dialog that appears after every backup,
   verify or restore operation.

. The permissions of the root directory are now backed up.

. More disk paths may now be defined, up to 100.

. UltraBac will now append to a tape instead of overwriting it when
   it discovers that the tape has not reached it's protection date. This
   only occurs during unattended operations.

FEATURES ADDED IN RELEASE 2.3
=============================

. Software Compression. This option is only available on systems running
   NT 3.51 or above. "Use Whichever Available" may be set in the preferences
   to use hardware compression if the device supports it, otherwise to use
   software compression. When backing up to disk devices, do not enable
   file-level compression, as this will slow the backup as the data will be
   compressed twice, and will not significantly reduce the amount of space
   used.

. "Create Set" enables the creation of set that selects all files on a drive
   in seconds. Choose Backup/New highlight the required drive and click
   the Create Set button.

. New Licensing Options. There are now 5 "Editions" :

   Personal - Will only perform backups on a stand-alone machine not
   connected to a network. Runs only on NT Workstation.

   Workstation - Will not run on a machine running NT Server. Will perform
   network backups ONLY if the network consists of five clients or fewer.
   Will not backup remote NT servers.

   Single Server - runs on NT Workstation or NT Server. Will perform
   network backups ONLY if the network consists of five clients or fewer.
   Will not backup remote NT servers.

   Network Server - runs on NT Workstation or NT Server. Will perform
   unlimited network backups, however it will not backup remote NT servers.

   Enterprise - runs on NT Workstation or NT Server. Will perform
   network backups. Will backup remote NT servers.

   IMPORTANT: In order to enable network backups (for 5 clients or fewer) in
   the Single Server & Workstation Editions, ALL machines must belong to
   a single domain OR a single workgroup.

. New log file format to enhance readability.

. UltraVue module allows display of remote UltraBac logs.

. UltraVue module now has "auto-refresh" option.

FEATURES ADDED IN RELEASE 2.2
=============================

When in 'Restore' and 'Verify' modes, a new option "Search Online Indexes..."
is available from the main menu. This function will search the online index
files for files matching a given user-defined mask. Therefore, it is
possible to locate files such as "*.exe" in indexes from backups performed
over the last "x" number of days.

UltraBac is now a full UNICODE application that will allow the backup and
restoration of files whose filenames contain UNICODE characters. The most
common files of this type are created by Macintosh clients on the NT network.

Unattended backups now only produce one backup log and one verify log per
backup group. The log will contain information relating to ALL sets in the
backup/verify operation.

NEW FEATURES IN ULTRACOPY 2.0
=============================

UltraCopy has been enhanced to allow copying from disk to tape and tape to
disk, as well as normal tape to tape copying. This allows the user to
backup to disk, and then at a later stage move the backup to tape.

AUTOLOADER SUPPORT
==================

Once UltraBac installation is complete, a 'Drivers' Sub-Directory will exist
off of the main UltraBac directory, which will contain two sub-directories,
NT351 for the NT 3.51 driver, and NT4 for the 4.0 Driver.

To install the driver for AutoLoader support:
For NT 3.x use the WindowsNT SETUP program:

. Select 'Options' menu, then 'Install/Remove Tape Devices'
.  Click 'Add'
. Select 'Other (Requires a disk from a hardware manufacturer)'
. Enter the location of the driver directory eg."C:\UltraBac\Drivers\NT351"
. Select 'BEI Medium Changer Driver 3.5x'
.  Click 'OK'
.  Click 'Install'
.  Follow on-screen instructions

For NT 4.0:
. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel select Tape Devices.
.  Click Add, Have Disk.
. Enter the path to the driver directory (eg. C:\UltraBac\Drivers\NT4)
. Select 'BEI Medium Changer Driver 4.0', click OK
. You may need to re-enter the path to the driver directory.

IMPORTANT: Remove any other autoloader drivers before installing

Please Note: The Autoloader driver is a separately chargeable option.

Please call BEI if you need additional support for an unlisted drive.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE DRIVERS
========================

We have provided copies of our high-performance tape drivers.
These are installed to the UltraBac\Drivers directory during installation.
You will need to install the regular drivers and then replace the
appropriate file with the file contained in the directory. Note that on
some slower SCSI systems that this can cause a reduction in performance,
in which case revert back to the original drivers.

TAPE COPIER PROGRAM
===================

An eval copy of the tape copier program is included on the diskette, and is
installed automatically. This is a separately chargeable option. The
program supports making upto 31 copies of a tape, simultaneously.

BACKUP TO DISK
==============

UltraBac allows the output of a backup to be directed to a disk path which
may exist anywhere in the network. To define a disk device, press Ctrl-T
from the main backup screen, and click "Define Disk" button. You may then
enter a UNC path which should be terminated by a trailing backslash. Use
preferences to select the disk device as the default output device.
Additionally, disk devices may be selected for unattended backups by
selecting a disk device from the "Define Tape Devices" dialog.

TROUBLESHOOTING
===============

. A 'General Transfer Error' may occur running the setup program when
   upgrading UltraBac when the 'BEI Scheduler' is still running, stop it
   by using the Control Panel/Services applet.
