Getting More Information on a Navaid

What Do I Do First?
Ok, first things first. You will need to create a scenery set so the Moving Map has something to display on its screen. A scenery set is really just a list of scenery (BGL) files that are read from your hard disk and loaded into the Moving Map. You can setup different scenery sets depending on where you will be flying. For example, you could create a set called Chicago to be used just while flying around the Chicago area. You could create a set called "Australia" which could include all navigation aids included in any Australian scenery you may have. Do not be tempted to create one huge scenery set which will include every bit of scenery on planet earth. Apart from taking a long time to load, the Moving Map can only accept 10,000 navaids, after which it stops loading. Scenery set specifications are saved for later use. Once you have created a set, you do not need to keep re-creating the set whenever you want to use it. Once it is created, you just select it from a list when you want to next use it.

To create a new scenery set, perform the following steps
    1. Start MMAPTOOL.EXE, The "Scenery Sets" tab should be selected.
    2. Click the "Add Set" button
    3. Type a meaningful name for the scenery set you are about to create and press Enter

Now that you have created a scenery set name, you will need to add items to this set. Items in this case refers to the names of scenery files.

To create a new scenery set item, perform the following steps...

1. With the name of the scenery set highlighted, click on the "Add Items" button.
2. A box appears asking for the directory name to start searching for these scenery files.
3. Click on the button with the 3 dots (...) and select your Flight Simulator\Scenery\Chicago\Scenery directory and click OK.
4. The directory name will now appear in the text box. Make sure "Include Sub Directories" is checked (although it does not really matter this time) and click OK.
5. You will now see a list of all the BGL files that were contained in the Chicago Directory. Click on "Add Items" again, and this time select your Flight Simulator\Scenery Directory and make sure "Include Sub Directories" is NOT CHECKED. Very important this time, otherwise you will get all scenery files in your entire Flight Simulator directory.
6. Some more files were just added to your list. You can leave it the way it is now if you want to. If you want to set things up properly though, delete all the search set items except for the BGL files in the Scenery\Chicago directory and 2 others, that is ndb_na.bgl and vor_na.bgl.
7. For some reason, these last 2 files are needed for the ndb and vor information for a lot of the scenery areas. Perhaps Microsoft have included all that information for all scenery areas in these 2 files, I do not know, maybe one of the scenery guru's out there can educate me on this one.

Congratulations, you have just created your first scenery set.

Ready For Takeoff
1. Now the fun begins. We have finished with the Moving Map Tool for now so you can close it down.

2. Start Flight Simulator and then start Moving Map (mmap.exe).

3. Moving Map should now be sitting on top of your flight simulator screen. You can move and resize the Moving Map instrument now and place it somewhere convenient. To move the map, click and drag somewhere near the top of the map. Probably anywhere within the top inch or so should be fine. To resize the map, click and drag on any of the borders of the display.

4. The map looks pretty empty at the moment. That is because we have not yet loaded any scenery. The scenery set that we created earlier is going to be the one we will load. If you followed the instructions and created a scenery set for Chicago, make sure your plane is in Chicago and not somewhere in Australia for example, otherwise you will load your scenery set but will not see anything.

5. To load a scenery set, click on the word "LOAD" about half way down the left hand side of the Moving Map instrument. In the list that appears should be the scenery set you just created earlier. Select that item and click OK (or double click on the item). After a short while, your Moving Map screen should be filled with different coloured navigation aids.

6. Take off and fly around now, you will quickly see what happens when you fly...

Getting More Information on a Navaid
If you have a scenery set loaded, you can get more information on any of the displayed navigation aids by simply clicking on the circle next to the navaid with the left mouse button. At the bottom of your screen will appear extra details including id, name, distance, estimated time of arrival and so on.

The selected navaid will be coloured red. To de-select the navaid, simply click on it again.
