This is a quick start tutorial for getting up and running with Moving Map quickly. This will enable you to see what Moving Map can do without worrying too much about fine tuning and customisation.
Included in the Moving Map archive is a file called "chicago.mmp". This file contains all APT, VOR, NDB, ILS, RWY and OMI information for the Flight Simulator area of Chicago. I actually used the Moving Map Tool to create this file from my own existing scenery files (BGL files). I have included it so you can use it straight away, rather than you having to worry about creating it yourself.
1. Start the Moving Map Tool program (mmaptool.exe)
2. Click the "Add Set" button and type "Chicago Scenery" as the description and click "OK".
3. Click the "Add Items" button.
4. On the screen that appears now, press the button with the 3 dots and select the directory where you have put the "chicago.mmp" file and click "OK".
5. Make sure "Include Sub Directories" is NOT CHECKED and click "OK". In the bottom list box you should now see the path to the chicago.mmp file. (for example c:\mmap\chicago.mmp).
6. Close the Moving Map Tool (mmaptool.exe), we have finished with it for now.
7. Start Flight Simulator and then start Moving Map (mmap.exe). Make sure you are in the Chicago area in Flight Simulator. The default Meigs airport will do fine...
8. When the Moving Map Instument is visible on your screen, click the word "LOAD" which is about half way down the left side of the Moving Map display.
9. In the screen that appears, select the scenery set you just created. If you followed these instructions, it would be called "Chicago Scenery".
10. That's it! You should now be able to
see all sorts of navaids and airports. Fly around for a while and have
fun. Click on some of the display options down the left hand side of the
Moving Map screen. For example, runway information is not shown by default.
Click on the RWY indicator to see all the runways.
