INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Moving Map instrument for
Microsoft Flight Simulator 95 and 98. The Moving Map is an instrument which
is designed to sit on top of your existing instrument panel (or anywhere
you want really) and display navigation information as you fly. It will
display VOR, NDB, ILS, OMI, RWY and Airport information as well as Indicated
Airspeed, True Airspeed, Heading, Wind Direction and Wind Speed information.
The display is constantly updated, for example, when you are approaching
an airport, the airport symbol and associated information on the Moving
Map will get closer and closer.
FEATURES:
Here is a list of some of the main features
of Moving Map...
-
Reads your existing scenery files. No need to
manually add the information you want to see. Moving Map will read scenery
files (BGL) that are in FS95 and FS98 formats. The best thing about this
is whatever scenery you may have is actually what is seen by the Moving
Map.
-
Completely resizable and moveable display. Change
the size and position of the Moving Map instrument to suit your specific
setup. Objects and Navaids are automatically scaled to the new size. Settings
are automatically saved so next time you will not have to move and resize
everything again.
-
Ability to run Moving Map from a second computer.
You can have the Moving Map instrument running on a second computer if
you wish. This means you could have a full screen Moving Map being displayed
on a second computer while your flight simulator is running as normal on
the primary computer. No need to network the two computers, all you need
is a null modem serial cable, available from any electronics store.
-
VOR, NDB, ILS, RWY, OMI and Airport information
is displayed in different colours so you can quickly see at a glance what
kind of navaid you are looking at. The ID of the navaid is displayed along
with additional information such as altitude or frequency. Toggle the display
to show any combination of waypoints.
-
Comes with the Moving Map Tool which allows
utility type functions such as allowing you to create your own waypoints
for inclusion in your scenery sets. Also allows export of your scenery
sets in several popular formats including formats for some of the popular
freeware/shareware GPS addons available for Flight Simulator 95/98.
-
Includes dynamic graphing of "Altitude Over
Time" and "Airspeed Over Time". You can view and monitor this information
in graphical format as it occurs. You could even have this information
as the main display rather than the map, would be especially interesting
during landing procedures. Graphs can be fully scrolled in any direction.
-
Get more information about any of the displayed
navaids by clicking on it. For example, click on an airport and you will
get Name, Altitude, ID and Frequency.
-
Zoom in as close as one-tenth of a nautical
mile or Zoom out to infinity. (Perhaps this is overkill!)
-
All Moving Map functions are accessable using
either the mouse or keyboard.
-
Customisable display, for example, no need to
display VOR and NDB information if all you are interested in are the airports
around where you are flying. You can also hide the Moving Map display completely
if you only want to look at it occassionally.
-
Does NOT affect Flight Simulator frame rate
or performance. One of the key priorities when developing this application
was to ensure system performance would not be affected. All critical functions
of Moving Map are run under separate threads and optimised for low system
impact.
-
Does NOT require any external VBX, OCX or DLL
files. All files you need to run Moving Map are located in the one directory
so installation or removal (I hope not) is a very simple process. OK, there
is one external file but I will tell you about that later.
-
Will co-exist with other Flight Simulator addons,
so you can keep running all your favourite utilities at the same time as
running Moving Map.
SYSTEM
REQUIREMENTS:
To run Moving Map you do not need very much.
You will need a computer running Windows 95 or Windows NT, you will need
Microsoft Flight Simulator 95 or Microsoft Flight Simulator 98, and you
will need the files required by Moving Map itself. Optionally, you can
have a second computer running Windows 95 or Windows NT, enabling you to
run the Moving Map component on a second computer. If you choose to do
this, you will also need a null modem serial cable. This cable can be purchased
from just about any electronics store and is very cheap. I can buy one
in Australia for about $10.
INSTALLATION
Installing Moving Map is a very simple process.
This is why there is no installation program to run. Apart from the fact
that an installation program is not required in this instance, they are
generally quite large and can add another layer of complexity to the process
if things do not quite go as planned. Also, if you are like me, you like
to know exactly what is being put onto your system and where.
The following files are contained in your
mmap.zip archive
mmap.exe (the moving
map display that runs while Flight Simulator is running)
mmaptool.exe (a tool
that you use to setup scenery areas, register the software etc)
mmaphost.exe (used for
Moving Map REMOTE mode)
chicago.mmp (an example
mmp file used in the Quick Start tutorial)
fs6ipc.dll (used to communicate
with Flight Simulator)
readme.txt (read this
first)
keys.txt (quick reference
for keystroke and mouse commands)
editor.txt (quick reference
for Moving Map Tool Editor)
help.zip (these help
files zipped up)
1. Copy mmap.exe, mmaptool.exe, mmaphost.exe
and chicago.mmp to the directory of your choice
2. Copy fs6ipc.dll to your Flight Simulator\modules
sub directory.
3. Unzip all the files in the help.zip archive
to a directory of your choice.
