1.1 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
=======================
Smiley PRO is a program that resides in your Windows system tray
and plays continuously looped sounds of various relaxing environments,
ideal for masking out noisy work environments, sleep aid, etc.

A program is supplied to allow the user to create their own Environment
plug-ins for use with Smiley PRO. The converter will turn any
22k, 8-bit, stereo WAV file into a Smiley plug-in. To encourage
third party development, the converter program can generate
"shareware" plug-ins that turn themselves off after 5 minutes.

Additional Environment plug-ins are available from our website, as
well as a section for user submissions!

Other possible uses for Smiley PRO include:

<1> Security - play normal conversational sounds while away from home.
<2> Animal Training - loop a single word or phrase for parrot training, etc.
<3> Baby - loop womb sounds (hearbeat, etc) for nurseries.

Smiley PRO is SHAREWARE.
The unregistered version will turn itself off after 5 minutes.
See the "Registration..." dialog for details on registering.
Registration will remove the nag screens and the 5 minute time limits.

1.2 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
=============================
Place the file SMPRO20.zip in an empty directory
and type "pkunzip SMPRO20.zip".
The ZIP archive should contain the following files:
 - SmileyPRO.exe The main executable file
 - readme.txt This file
 - WAV2SMI.exe The WAV file to Smiley Environment converter
 - license.txt The software license
 - *.smi Environment Plug-in files (if supplied)

Double-click on the file "SmileyPRO.exe" to run the program.

----------------------------------------------------
 NOTE:
The program may be placed in your "Startup" folder
 for automatic execution.

1.3 USING SMILEY PRO
====================
Help is available in the form of "tool tips". Hold the mouse pointer over
a control for a few seconds and a tool tip will appear.

New Environments may be selected by right-clicking on the Smiley
icon in the system tray (where the clock is), and selecting
"Environment..." from the menu. This will present a list of "preset"
Environments, and any currently installed "plug-in" Environments.
If there are no plug-ins listed, the program did not find any plug-ins
in the specified plug-ins directory. The plug-ins directory may be
changed by right clicking on the Smiley icon, selecting "Options..."
from the menu, and changing the value in the box labeled "Plug-Ins Path".
If you keep you plug-in files in the same directory as Smiley, then
just leave this box blank. Plug-In Environment files have an
extension of ".SMI".

You can get information and details about a plug-in environment by
selecting it in the list of plug-ins, and clicking on the info 'i' button.

Smiley may be silenced at any time by selecting "Silence"
from the menu, or left-clicking on the icon in the tray.
Selecting "Silence" again will resume playback.

The registered version of Smiley PRO can be configured to automatically
shut itself off after a specified time...ideal for using Smiley PRO as
a sleep aid! The auto-shutoff feature is configured by selecting
"Options..." from the menu. Please note that the shutoff time is
approximate.

You can exit Smiley PRO by selecting "Exit" from the menu.

1.4 USING THE WAV2SMI CONVERTER PROGRAM (making your own environments)
======================================================================
The converter program will accept any 22k, 8-bit, stereo WAV file,
and convert it into a ".SMI" Smiley Environment plug-in.
Currently, only 22k, 8-bit, stereo WAV files are supported.
If your input file is in another format, please convert it with
any of the shareware or commercially available WAV file editors.
A fantastic shareware WAV editing program is called "Cool Edit".
Please see the "REFERENCES" section below for more information on
"Cool Edit".

To make the environment loop point less obvious, you should use
sounds that do not contain any single distinct sounds. For instance,
the murmuring of a crowd in a railway station or restaurant would make
a very good environment, but the sound of a crowd with one person shouting
"hey!" in somewhere in the middle of the sound would be make a poor
environment because you would always hear the person shouting "hey!", thus
exposing the loop point. The end points in your WAV files should also
be edited with a good WAV editor (see the "REFERENCES" section below) to
minimize "POP" at the loop point. The easiest way to do this is to have
the WAV file sound data both start and end at zero DC voltage.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
 NOTE:
To encourage third party development, the converter program can generate
"shareware" plug-ins that always turn themselves off after 5 minutes.
To make a "shareware" plug-in, check the "Make Shareware!" checkbox on
 the converter program.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Users and developers are invited to submit their own
Environment plug-ins to our website!
