Add Page Numbers to a Header, Footer, or Legend

Adding page numbers to a document gives it a more professional appearance and makes it easier to keep track of page sequence. You can also add the total number of pages.

To add page numbers to a header, footer, or legend

  1. On the File menu, click Page Setup.
  2. Click the Header, Footer, or Legend tab.
  3. Under Alignment, click the Left, Center, or Right tab.
  4. In the text box, place the insertion point where you want to add the information.
  5. Click Page Number , Total Number of Pages , or both.

You can add both the page number and total number of pages to show each page’s place in the overall page count (such as 1 of 3, 2 of 3, 3 of 3).
