INSTALLING MICROSOFT PROJECT 98

IMPORTANT: Disable Virus Protection Before Running Setup
--------------------------------------------------------

Some virus protection programs, such as VSafe.com and Norton Anti-
Virus Autoprotect, can interfere with the Microsoft Project 98
Setup program. If you use a virus protection program on your
computer, disable it before running Setup. (You can re-enable the
virus protection program after Setup is complete.) Note: If your
virus detection program starts automatically when you start
Windows, you can disable it by restarting Windows while holding
down the SHIFT key.

Minimum System Requirements for Microsoft Project 98
----------------------------------------------------

To use Microsoft Project 98, you need:

* Personal or multimedia computer with a 486 or higher processor.
* Microsoft Windows 95 operating system, Windows NT Workstation
3.51 with Service Pack 5 or later, or Windows NT Workstation
4.0 with Service Pack 2 or later.
* 12 MB of memory for use on Windows 95; 16 MB of memory for use
  on Windows NT Workstation.
* Hard disk space required; 21 MB required for
typical installation, depending on configuration and 35 MB for a
  full installation.
* CD-ROM drive.
* VGA or higher-resolution video adapter (Super VGA, 256-color
  recommended).
* Microsoft Mouse, Microsoft IntelliMouse, or compatible pointing
device (Microsoft IntelliMouse required for extended
  navigational capabilities).

Additional items or services required to use certain features:

* Microsoft Exchange Client, Windows NT Mail, or other MAPI-compliant
messaging software for e-mail and some advanced workgroup
  functionality.
* Microsoft Internet Information Server, Netscape Fastrack or
Enterprise Server, or O'Reilly Web Site Pro Server for some
advanced workgroup functionality. Microsoft Personal Web
Server is included with Microsoft Project 98 if none of the
  preceding web servers is available.
* 9600 baud or higher modem (14.4 baud recommended).
* Multimedia computer required to access sound and other
  multimedia effects.
* Some Internet functionality may require Internet access and
payment of a separate fee to a service provider.

Requirements for Microsoft Project 98 with Windows NT Workstation
       4.0
---------------------------------------------------------------

To use Microsoft Project 98 with Windows NT Workstation 4.0, you
should install Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later.

Using Punctuation Characters in Folder Names May Cause Problems
---------------------------------------------------------------

If the name of the folder you install Microsoft Project 98 into
includes a comma (,), single quotation mark ('), or exclamation
point (!), you may have problems when you use the program. To
avoid problems, use the default folder or use only letters,
numbers, and spaces in folder names.

For more information on installing Microsoft Project 98, please
refer to the setup file (Setup.wri).

Installing Microsoft Project on a System that Already has an
       Office 97 Application Installed
------------------------------------------------------------

If you already have installed another Microsoft Office 97
application to "Run from Network Server," you should also install
Microsoft Project 98 to "Run from Network Server." Having one
Office application installed to "Run from Network Server" and
another application installed on the local computer is not
supported.

If you install in this unsupported configuration, two possible
problems are:

1. When you start Microsoft Project 98, you see the message:

   "Error Starting Program
A required .DLL file, MSO97.DLL, was not found"

2. During setup of Microsoft Project 98 you get an error:

"Unexpected Critical Error: Can't Start Program"

When you start Microsoft Project 98 and you attempt to run
any macros or launch the Visual Basic Editor you get the error

   "Vbext1.olb cannot be loaded."

Removing the ~mssetup.t Folder After Running Setup
--------------------------------------------------

After you install Microsoft Project 98, the folder ~mssetup.t may
be left on your hard disk. This folder is used temporarily by
the Setup program and may not be removed when Setup is complete. You
can safely delete this folder using My Computer or Windows Explorer.

WEB SERVERS AND BROWSERS, AND WORKGROUP MESSAGES

O'Reilly Web Site Pro Server
----------------------------

To configure the O'Reilly Web Site Pro server to work with the
Microsoft Project 98 web workgroup features, you need to allow
CGI execution from any HTML URL. To enable this, do the following:

1. Run the Server Admin program for the web server.
2. Click the "Mapping" tab.
3. Click the "Content Types" list selector button.
4. Click the ".cgi" file extension and make sure that the MIME
   Content Type is "wwwserver/shellcgi".
5. Click the "Standard CGI" selector and note the directory path
of the "/cgi-shl/" URL path. You can close the Web Site Server
   Properties dialog box.
6. In Microsoft Project 98, click Options on the Tools menu, and then
   click the Workgroup tab.
7. Enter the web server URL as:

   http://ServerName/cgi-shl

8. Enter the web server root information from step 4 as:

   \\ServerName\ShareName\cgi-shl

9. Click OK and allow Microsoft Project 98 to copy the necessary files
   to the web server.
10. On the web server, go to the directory you entered in step 8, and then
copy the file Mspjhttp.exe to Mspjhttp.cgi

You'll need to make the following modification to the URL that you
enter in your web browser to access the TeamInbox data:

Instead of entering:

  http://ServerName/mspjhttp.exe?

Enter:

  http://ServerName/mspjhttp.cgi

In addition to the URL modification noted above, if you have enabled
the "Send hyperlink in E-mail note" workgroup option, when you
receive a hyperlink in an e-mail message, the URL you receive will not
work unmodified. The e-mail message says:

In your TeamInbox, you have received a task assignment, update, or
request for status for a project you are working on. To review and
respond to this message, please connect to the following site:

  <http://ServerName/mspjhttp.exe?_logon=@xxxx_email=@xxxx>

In order to follow the hyperlink, the portion of the link that says
"mspjhttp.exe?" will need to be changed to "mspjhttp.cgi"

Netscape Fastrack and Enterprise Server
---------------------------------------

In order to get the Microsoft Project 98 web features to work on a Netscape
web server, you need to turn on the ability to execute CGI applications from
any directory. You also must not install the workgroup features to the
CGI directory.

Netscape Navigator Browser
--------------------------

If you are using a Netscape Navigator browser to execute the TeamInbox
data, if you receive the error message "HTTP/1.0 404 Object Not Found"
check to see if there are spaces in the URL name. For example, the
following example URL will fail:

  http://ProjServer/S p a c e In Name/Mspjhttp.exe?

To make it succeed with the Netscape Navigator, use a URL where the name
doesn't contain spaces such as:

  http://ProjServer/SpaceInName/Mspjhttp.exe?

Microsoft Internet Explorer Browser
-----------------------------------

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer prior to version 3.02,
when working in the TeamInbox, you may run out of memory. Symptoms
include system slowdown, fonts not appearing correctly,
"not enough memory" error messages, and links not being followed
when clicked. Closing Microsoft Internet Explorer restores the
memory. The long-term solution is to update to Internet Explorer
version 3.02 or later.

Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.02 is available on your Microsoft
Project 98 CD in the Valupack\IExplore folder. It is also available at:

  http://microsoft.com/ie/download

UPGRADING MICROSOFT PROJECT 4.0 AND PROJECT 95 FILES

Upgrading Toolbars
------------------

If you have toolbar buttons that use the SendKeys command, these
buttons will not translate into Microsoft Project 98.

Upgrading Files
---------------

You can open Microsoft Project 4.0 and Project 95 files directly
into Microsoft Project 98. Please note that the time required to open
and save a Microsoft Project 4.0 or 95 file the first time will take
longer than a file that is in the native Microsoft Project 98 file format
because a conversion is taking place.

Files That Have Paste-Linked Information
---------------------------------------

If you have project files that have paste-linked information
and you open the files in Microsoft Project 98 on a Windows 95
system, you may receive the following alert when you choose to
reestablish links:

"There was a problem updating the link.

Do you want to delete the link?"

To correct this issue, you can choose to NOT delete the links and
save the files in the Microsoft Project 98 file format by
clicking Save on the File menu. Once the source project files
and the destination project files have been upgraded to the
Microsoft Project 98 file format, the paste links will work correctly.

You can also resolve the issue by installing DCOM for Windows 95
onto your Windows 95 system. DCOM for Windows 95 is available at:

  http://Microsoft.com/oledev

MICROSOFT VISUAL BASIC FOR APPLICATIONS

Upgrading Solutions to Microsoft Project 98
-------------------------------------------

Because of feature enhancements and improvements in Microsoft
Project 98, some macros written for Microsoft Project 4.0 and
Microsoft Project 95 may not work unmodified in Microsoft Project
98. For more information, see the Microsoft Project Visual Basic
Help file and search for the topic "Changes in the Microsoft Project
98 Object Model."

WORKING IN MICROSOFT PROJECT

Vendor Independent Messaging (VIM) Not Supported
--------------------------------------------------------------

If you use a 16-bit e-mail program compatible with Vendor
Independent Messaging (VIM), such as Lotus cc:Mail 2.x or 6.x or
Lotus Notes 3.x, you will not be able to send or route projects or
send workgroup messages. You can, however, send workgroup messages
using the web components.

HTML Template Files
-------------------

If you save your project to an HTML file and select the
"Export to HTML using standard template" import/export map, you
may get the following message:

  "The template file "c:\...\Microsoft Office\Templates\
Microsoft Project Web\Centered Mist Dark.html" cannot be
   found.

To save without using the template, click Continue."

This error occurs if Microsoft Project was installed to a folder
other than the default folder. When templates are associated with
import/export maps, a path to the template is hard-coded with the
map.

To fix the problem, click Cancel on the error message, and then
click Edit in the Export Format dialog box. In the "Base export on
HTML template" field, delete the current path and file name
information, clear the check box, and then reselect the
check box. This will repopulate the correct path and template
name information. Click OK, and then click Save.

Using Projects from a Microsoft Access or Microsoft Project Database
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Microsoft Project 98 has the ability to both open and save projects
to a Microsoft Access 97 database or a Microsoft Project 98 project
database (*.mpd). Because of various limits, however, you cannot
open more than 15 projects from the database while in the same
session of Microsoft Project 98.

For example, if you have 20 projects stored in an MPD file and you
attempt to insert and expand more than 15 of these into a consolidated
project, you get the error message:

"[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access 97 Driver]Can't open any more
   tables"

Copies of Microsoft Project 98 running on other computers are able to
open projects from the same database up to the 15 project limit.

Referencing Inserted Projects, Resource Sharing, and Cross-Project Dependencies
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Microsoft Project 98 has several features that allow you to create
references to other projects. For example, when you Insert a Project, you
record a reference to the project being inserted. If the files are moved,
it is possible for that reference to no longer be valid. As such, it is
recommended that files be located in stable location either on your local
hard drive or on your network before you create reference to such files.

If you create references for Inserted Projects, Resource Sharing, and
Cross-Project Dependencies within the same set of files and then move that
set of files, you may find that the references are not correctly updated.
To fix the problem, do the following:

1. Open the resource pool file read-write and open all files sharing
    resources from that pool file.
2. From the resource pool file, choose Resources from the Tools menu
    and then choose Share Resources.
3. Select all the sharing links and click Break Link.
4. Save and close the resource pool file and all files sharing resources.
5. Open any projects that contain Inserted Projects.
6. For each Inserted Project, verify that the reference to the project is
correct. If not correct, fix the reference by choosing Task Information
on the Project menu and then clicking the Advanced tab. You can update
the path to the Inserted Project in the Link to project box.
7. Save and close all projects containing Inserted Project.
8. Open any projects which contain Cross-Project Dependencies.
9. For each Cross-Project Dependency, delete the dependency and then
    re-create the dependency.
10. Save and close all projects containing Cross-Project Dependencies.
