Colors:

In the upper right is the drop-down gadget containing some predefined color-schemes. You may want to use this if you changed resolution to 8Bit temporarily.

Below this you can see the four possibilities of files:

File not selected
File selected
Dir not selected
Dir selected

Path of active directory window (Source)
Statusbar

Single click on the name sets the color in the colorbox to the foreground color of the selected item.
Double click sets the colorbox to the background color
The color of the colorbox can be changed using the three sliders or by clicking on the box itself. This invokes the Windows colorrequester.
Clicking on Forecolor or Backcolor sets the foreground color or background color of the item right of the button.
Double-clicking on the window itself sets the colorbox to the background color of the window, clicking on 'PCOpus backcolor' sets the background color of the window and the statusbar.

The 'Directory Entry Test...' is a mirror of a line in the directory windows. Use the left slider to adjust the size of the line, the right slider to adjust the fontsize. Double-click on the line to change the font. Windows 95 seems to substitute some of the fonts. Don't know how to prevent this. You therefor can not use all fonts. Further you should only use non-proportional fonts. It works fine, but look quite ugly.

Use Filetype color:
Selected files that represent a known filetype keep their foreground color, Only the background color of selected files is used.

Misc

Displaywidth of Filename:
here you can change the width of the displayed filenames
Chunk:
Size of chunks copied. A larger value may result in speed-increases during copy. Originalvalue is 32768. Best results with 65536, at least for me. Below this is a button that changes the format of the memory display in the title of the PCOpus window:
Show in bytes, kilobytes or megabytes.
This setting affects the display of the size of the drives and the free space on them, too.
Buffers:
Number of buffers available for directory buffering. You may use any number from 1 to 100.
Languagefile:
This allows the selection of the language file PCOpus uses. At the moment english and german are available.
Double-click on the gadget to select a file. You may enter a filename without path if the language file resides in the PCOpus directory.
I would be thankful for any help translating PCOpus to any other language. Preferably Kisuaheli and Japanese :-)
De-Encode-Key:
You may enter a password to use with De-Encode-Copy. Be sure to keep this password somewhere. If you forget it, you may have troubles in decoding your encoded files. It is saved in the configuration file

Misc 2

Checkbuttons have been sorted alphabetically, I did not find any useful groups.

Allow SHIFT for multiselect:
With this option checked you can select a directory-entry by clicking on it or pressing space, move the cursor to another entry, press shift and click on this entry. All files between the first selected entry and this one will be selected or deselected, depending on the selection first made.
Auto Notification:
When this option is on, PCOpus will reread the directories if any change is made on them from outside PCOpus. The dirs are not reread if any files are selected. The disadvantage is, that PCOpus will always jump to foreground if directories are read.
Cursor follows click:
If checked, the cursor that can be moved with the cursorkeys is set on the entry that is clicked with the mouse.
Attention: If you move your mouse slightly while clicking, PCOpus will interpret this 'click' as a 'move'. Therefore the cursor is not always moved to the file you clicked on.
Delete non empty directories:
If this option is off, the user will be asked if he is sure to delete a directory that contains files or other directories. If this option is on, every directory will be deleted regardless of files or directories inside.
Disable Directorybuffering:
This disables the directory-buffers.
Well, does not make THAT much sense, but if you need it ...
Disable Timer
This completely disables the internal timer. No free memory will be displayed and Autonotification will not work when this option is on. Helpful if you are trying to burn CDs and your Computer is not the fastest one.
Exit at once:
If this option is checked, PCOpus will terminate immediately on exit. The user will not be asked if he wants to save the configuration or change his opinion.
Handle dropped files directly:
If you drag and drop files from outside PCOpus into PCOpus and this option is checked, the first file dropped will get a simulated double-left-click and the program or command you assigned to L-L is executed. Press any Qualifier (Shift, CTRL, Alt) when dropping the file to prevent this handling.
Ignore 'Read-Only' flags:
With this option on 'read-only' files are treated as normal files. Switch it off and be bored with a request if a read-only file should be deleted or not.
Keep defective files:
If an error is encountered and this option is checked, then the destination file is not deleted but kept. At least as much as possible. For safety reasons this setting is NOT SAVED !
Keypress moves Directorydisplay:
With this option on you can move to directoryentries by pressing a letter-key on the keyboard. For example pressing 'm' moves the display and the cursor to the first file beginning with 'm'. Shift and 'm' moves to the first directory beginning with 'm'. This is only useful if Sort by name is activated.
It is possible to enter more than one letter, if the time between keypresses is less than 1 second. You can enter 'win386.swp' to move directly to this entry (if it exists). Press 'Backspace' to delete any entries you made already and start with a new search or wait more than 1 second.
Parent from Root shows Drives:
If this is checked and 'Parent' is called from the root of a drive, the drivelist will be displayed.
Rename to move:
If you select Move and the source and destination drives are the same (for example: move c:\windows\system to c:\temp), the files are not copied and deleted, but renamed. This is considerably faster, of course. With this option on you can move your Windows directory to anywhere on the same drive. Please take care !
Reread always:
With this button checked, the Source is always re-read when deleting or moving files. With this button off, successfully moved or deleted files are only removed from the internal buffer. This is considerably faster and much more convenient, but if a directory was changed by another program, these changes do not take effect.
If the number of files left in the window is smaller than the number of lines displayed per window, the directory is always re-read. This is quite fast and the user is on the safe side.
If an error occurs during moving or deleting files, the directory is re-read, due to the internal handling.
Reread drivenames:
When this option is on, PCOpus always reads the drivenames when displaying the drivelist. This results in a slightly longer time to display the drives but all names of drives are correct (especially those of CD-Roms). When this option is off, the drivelist must be refreshed to get all current names.
ReRead if same:
If this option is checked and the source and destination path are the same, both sides will be updated if one side has changed. If one or more files are selected in the destination, this display will not be updated.
Replace all files on copy:
Always replaces existing files without asking the user. Leave it off if you don't like it
Save Windowposition:
If on, the position of PCOpus on the screen is saved. If off, PCOpus will be centered on the screen on startup.
Stick at position on Reread:
With this option on the display is moved to the position where it was before when a 'reread' of the directory is performed.
Use DOS 8+3 Names:
Only the short names are used, no long filenames.
With this option on, all programs are able to process the selected files. Since the long filenames may be long :-) and can contain spaces not all programs are capable of using them. Please make sure that it is possible that a directory has a long name. If you want to access a file in this directory check this option in the root of this drive and enter the directory where the file is located afterwards.
The need for this option has been widely reduced since external calls are mostly done using 8+3 names.
Autosense Filename length
with this option on, PCOpus will look for the longest name in the directory and adjust the display to fit this name.
'Copy' extracts files directly:
with this option on, files inside archives are extracted to the destination directory directly. All subdirs from inside the archive are created, any existing files will be overwritten without warning. Use this only if you have to extract single large files from an archive.

Bank

This lets you configure your buttonbank.
You can select the number of vertical buttons, the number of horizontal buttons and the gaps between single buttons. Should be quite self-explaining.

Paths

Here you can define the paths to your prefered ASCII and HEX editors and viewers and your favourite Virus-Scanner.
Below this is a wide drop down gadget containing all your drives and your preferred directories.
On entering this configuration window, the path of your active directory is displayed in the gadget. Click on it and press 'Return' to add this directory to your preferred directories list. These directories will be accessible via Alt-F1, Alt-F2 or Select Drive. It is quite convenient if you have your text files saved in a directory like Y:\WINDOWS\WORD\TEXT\PRIVATE\ME\FOOBAR and you want to get there as fast as possible. These directory definitions are saved with the configuration.
Assigning names:
You can enter a certain directory inside the field with your keyboard, too.
You may want to add a 'name' or description for this directory. For the case above, you may want to use 'Texts2' as a description. Do this by using a '>' behind the directory and then then name you want to use. i.e.: Y:\WINDOWS\WORD\TEXT\PRIVATE\ME\FOOBAR>Texts2
You can assign names to drives (C:\, A:\), but these names are NOT saved ! Below this is the startup-directory definition. You can define a startup- directory for the left and the right window. Double-clicking the text- gadget will bring the path from the directory-definition gadget to the startup text-gadget. Of course you can enter a directory by yourself. It is also possible to enter 'home' or 'current', where 'home' is the directory where the PCOpus executable is located and 'current' is the current directory you are in when starting PCOpus.
Below this is a drop-down gadget that displays the current temporary directory. The drop-down list containes the following directories to select from:

Application directory
Windows Temp directory
current path
current Temp directory.

Of course you can enter any directory you like. If the path you entered does not exist, PCOpus will use the path you used before changing.
