What you've just downloaded is a beta-test of GameSpy featuring Quake II. Because we wanted to get this release out as soon as possible, and due to some oversights in the current server protocols of the Quake II product, not all features are working correctly. So please read this document before sending in any bug reports. However, GameSpy 3D 1.5 will still help you to find the best Internet gameplay available for Quake II. Bring it on!

  INSTALLATION:
Simply copy the "GameSpy.exe" file included in this archive into the folder that currently contains GameSpy.
Before you can start playing Quake II, you'll have to do two steps:

  1. Tell GameSpy where Quake II resides:
Simply run GameSpy and select "view/options/", then click on the "GamePlay" tab. Type in the full pathname to your Quake II directory in the space indicated (for example: "c:\games\quakeII").

  2. Add Quake2 Server Lists to GameSpy:
Select "view/options/", then click on the "Server Lists" tab. Click on the "Add" Button and copy in this url: http://asp.planetquake.com/q2servers/q2gamespy.txt
Then be sure to click on the drop down box labeled "Server Source for Game and select "Quake 2". Close it up and you're ready to roll.

FINDING AND PLAYING GAMES ON QUAKE II SERVERS:
GameSpy 3D will function exactly the same way it did for Quake. Just click on the "Quake II" tab to the left of the GameSpy 3D window, then click on "GameSpy/Update this Source." Wait a few moments and watch your screen flood with the fun. Mmmmnnn, Quake II goodness! When it's done, double-click on a server with a nice low ping and plenty of fresh meat -- you're ready to start waxin' chumps!
If you get an error message, click on "view/options", click on "GamePlay," and verify that you've got the correct drive letter and pathname to your Quake II folder.

  KNOWN PROBLEMS/ISSUES:
  * Map names: At this time, a flaw in the Quake II code incorrectly reports what maps servers are playing on. The only way to know for sure what map a server is playing is to log in; most servers will incorrectly say that they are playing "base1." (In fact, they sometimes report that the server is still playing the opening cinematic. :)
  * Changing Player colors/skins/gender: This release of GameSpy 3D does not allow one to configure the Quake II player's skin (the color of the clothes the soldier is wearing) or gender. This must be done manually within Quake II (although Quake II will save this information from one game to the next.) These features will be added in a future release.
  * Player Colors, Connect Times: Quake II servers do not report player colors or connect times, and as such these elements aren't listed for each server.

  FOR HELP AND BUGS:

  * Send e-mail to support@gamespy.com. Be sure to include information about the type of system you're using and a detailed description of the problem you're having. Don't forget to remind us what version of GameSpy 3D you're using! ;)
