How do I install cc:Mail Web?
-----------------------------
Note: You cannot use Lotus cc:Mail Release 6 for the World
Wide Web to access your Release 8 post office.

1. Read this file before installing cc:Mail Web for information
about servers, browsers, and hardware requirements.

2. Install an HTTP server and activate the common gateway interface
   (CGI) in all Netscape(TM) servers.

Note: You must install cc:Mail Web in the document directory
   of your HTTP server.

3. To install cc:Mail Web as part of the cc:Mail Release 8
System Installation, run SETUP.EXE from the \INSTALL
directory on the Release 8 CD-ROM.
   or
To install only cc:Mail Web, run SETUP.EXE from the \CCWEB
directory on the Release 8 CD-ROM.

For more information about setting up cc:Mail Web after you
install it, see Chapter 9 in "Lotus cc:Mail Release 8
   Administrator's Guide."

4. Verify that cc:Mail Web has been installed successfully. Go
to Control Panel - Services on your Windows NT computer. Make
sure that the services "ccMail Session Daemon" and "ccMail ccWeb"
   have started.

If the services did not start, check the startup information.
Make sure the services are set up to log in with an account that
has access rights the server where your hub post office is located.

5. Make sure the account used by the cc:Mail Web services has access
rights to all post offices that you want your users to access.

cc:Mail Web logs in to the hub post office; then, logs in to other
post offices in your mail system by using the paths specified in
the Directory of the hub post office.

What are the new features in this release?
------------------------------------------
o Running cc:Mail Web in the Windows NT operating system
   as a service

o Sending multiple file attachments with a message

o Selecting addresses from an address book

o Searching for addresses

o Managing your Personal Address Book

o Searching for messages by subject, author, or text

o Selecting multiple messages to move, copy, or delete

o Using hierarchical folders

o Saving work-in-progress messages in the Drafts folder

o Setting user preferences

o Using message preview to view a message with the other
   frames open

o Administering cc:Mail Web online with the Administration
   pages

Which browsers does cc:Mail Web support?
----------------------------------------
cc:Mail Web supports two tiers of browsers that have been
completely or partially tested to run with cc:Mail Web.

Tier 1 is completely tested, is compatible with cc:Mail Web,
and is supported by cc:Mail Support Services.

Tier 1 includes the following browsers:

o Netscape Navigator 2.02

o Netscape Navigator 3.0

o Netscape Navigator 3.01

Tier 2 is partially tested, is compatible with cc:Mail Web at a
basic level, and includes Microsoft(R) Internet Explorer(TM)
Version 3.01.

Note: Tier 2 is not supported by cc:Mail Support Services since all
the features have not been tested to work with this browser.

Which HTTP servers does cc:Mail Web support?
--------------------------------------------
o Netscape Enterprise Server 2.0 and later versions

o Netscape FastTrack Server 2.0 and later versions

o Netscape Commerce Server 1.12 and later versions

Note: Make sure you set the CGI file type in all active
Netscape servers.

o Microsoft(R) Internet Information Server, Version 3

Note: Before you use Internet Information Server, Version 3, make
these changes in your server's registry:

1. Go to the Parameters subdirectory, which is
located under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM, as shown in the
   following example:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM
   \CurrentControlSet
   \Services
   \W3SVC
   \Parameters

2. Do not change the default (0) of AllowSpecialCharsInShell REG_DWORD.

When you run batch files, the default (0) controls special characters,
such as &, on the command line.

Caution: If you change the default from 0 to 1, you can create
serious security risks since users can run many commands on your server.

3. Change the default of CreateProcessAsUser REG_DWORD from 1 to 0.

By default, the server runs CGI scripts for users by using the
Win32 CreateProcessAsUser API. Using the default (1) poses serious
security implications because CGI scripts can now easily access the
system. When you set the flag to 0, CGI scripts start with the
CreateProcess API and the scripts run in the context of the system.

What hardware is required to run the cc:Mail Web Service?
--------------------------------------------------------
cc:Mail recommends using a personal computer that
meets these requirements:

o 32MB of random access memory (RAM)

o 11MB of hard-disk space

o Space on your hard disk to store the log files

Hints and tips for using cc:Mail Web
------------------------------------
o Depending on which browser you're using, keyboard controls
(for example Tab and Enter) may not function. For example,
you may not be able to press Enter to log in. Use the mouse
instead, or tab to the Log in button and press the Spacebar.

o Don't use a comma in mailing-list or bulletin-board names.

o If you have an entry in an address book with the same name
as a mailing list or a bulletin board, then mail addressed
to this name will be delivered to the entry in the address
   book.

o Make sure that you use your cc:Mail user name to log in to
cc:Mail Web; for example, John Valentine.

   Note: Don't log in to cc:Mail Web by using your network ID;
   for example, jvalentine.

What are the known problems in this release?
--------------------------------------------
o Make sure that you run a release of cc:Mail Web that is
supported for your post office; otherwise, cc:Mail Web
exits with a general protection fault (GPF) when users
try to log in to the post office by using cc:Mail Web.

o If you use CCPODOWN to shut down your post office, send an
e-mail to your users letting them know when you will
shut down the cc:Mail post office. This allows users to log
out of cc:Mail Web before the post office shuts down.

o If users cannot reply to messages that they receive and an
   "Unknown user" error message appears:

Have the users resend the message to the post office that is
   directly above their post office.
   or
Make sure that the users names and the source post office names
are listed in the Directory of your post office.

o When you are in the Message frame and want to view a message
that does not have a subject, double-click the message icon.

o When you create and name an entry in your Personal Address book
and the name already exists, then, the new entry will replace the
   existing entry.

Note: An error message does not appear to warn users
that the new entry will replace the existing entry.

o When you are in the View frame and viewing messages
by clicking the Next button, you can't delete messages
that appear in the next page of messages.

   To delete a message:

   1. Go to the Mailbox frame.
   2. Select a message that you want to delete.
   3. Click Delete.
   4. Click OK.

Which features are not included in this release?
------------------------------------------------

However, you can configure your browser to view other
file types. See the documentation that came with your
   browser for more information.
