README FIRST
F-PROT Professional for NetWare (FPN)

For a list of International Distributors of F-PROT Professional,
see the DISTRIB.TXT file which is located on the installation diskettes.

There is now a file included on the first installation diskette,
called FILESNEW.TXT. It is a list of file descriptions and files that
have changed since the previous release.

On occasion we distribute a patch for a release which is available
via our BBS, FTP and Web site. The easiest way to use the file is to:
1. Place the patch in SYS:SYSTEM
2. Change the files to be updated from read only to normal so that you
can copy the new files over them. For example if you were updating
F-PROT.NLM you would type: flag f-prot.nlm -ro
3. Since the patch files are zipped, extract the files.
4. Flag the files back to read only, for example flag f-prot.nlm +ro
5. Unload and then reload F-PROT.

        VSEngine.NLM v.2.27B
        FPNAdmin.EXE v.2.27B
        F-Delay.NLM v.2.27B

PRODUCT ENHANCEMENTS
Novell has replaced the NWCALLS.DLL with several new DLLs. For this
reason, we are no longer installing NWCALLS with FPN. We now install
the following new DLLs: CALWIN16.DLL, CLNWIN16.DLL, CLXWIN16.DLL,
LOCWIN16.DLL and NCPWIN16.DLL. The new DLLs offer better support
for Client 32, a simplified server connection management scheme, and
will permit more flexibility when using NDS as FPN becomes
more NDS-aware. We have tested the new DLLs using NetWare Client 32
for DOS/Windows 3.1 and the NetWare DOS requester (VLMs). Clients
running NETX.EXE have not been fully tested. As NETX.EXE is no longer
updated by Novell, we recommend using either NetWare Client 32 or the
NetWare DOS requester.

FIXES
In the past, we have received a few reports of a lost connection when
terminating FPN Administration. By using the simplified connection
management features of the new NetWare DLLs we have been able to
eliminate this problem. (See more on this under SPECIAL NOTES)

There were some reports of a problem disinfecting read-only macro
documents. This is now fixed.

We have fixed a problem that occasionally caused an Abend when
disinfecting an Excel macro virus.

We have removed a non-functional browse button that was inadvertently
included in the settings dialog box in the last release.

SPECIAL NOTES

We have removed FP.EXE (the F-PROT loader program) because it is a
DOS utility and the functionality that it provides is already built
into F-PROT Professional for NetWare.

Release Notes FPN v.2.27.1

PRODUCT ENHANCEMENTS
A new virus signature that detects the Plagiarist.5120 virus
has been added.

There is a new F-PROT loader program, FP.EXE. This program loads
F-PROT.EXE and F-MACRO.EXE in succession making certain that file
and macro viruses are found. FP.EXE accepts the same command line
parameters as F-PROT.EXE and F-MACRO.EXE, sending the correct
switches to each application. Thus, the user needs to enter only
one command line and both applications will run accordingly.
FP.EXE is located in the SE_FMAC.EXE self-extracting file.

FIXES
On some systems, FPN Administrator would prompt users for a
password when none was needed. This situation has been
corrected. Prior to the fix, some users were not allowed to
advance beyond the password dialog box.

SPECIAL NOTES
The proper installation of FPN v2.27.1 requires that its
DEPLOYNW.FPN file be located in the directory that contains
FPN Administrator. DEPLOYNW.FPN is copied over automatically when
2.27.1's FPN Administrator is installed. If DEPLOYNW.FPN is not
found in that specific directory, users will receive and error
message that says "Unable to find load file F-MACRO". When updating
from an earlier version of FPN, if you copy only the new FPN NLMs
to you server, be certain that you also copy DEPLOYNW.FPN into the
directory that has the FPN Administrator program files.

Release Notes FPN 2.27

        F-PROT.NLM v.2.27
        VSEngine.NLM v.2.27
        FPNAdmin.exe v.2.27
        F-Delay.NLM v.2.27

PRODUCT ENHANCEMENTS
New virus signatures have been added for this release.

Macro virus detection and disinfection is now available in FPN. We
have added a new NLM named F-MACRO.NLM to handle this task. F-PROT.NLM
loads and unloads the new F-MACRO.NLM automatically. If you do not want
F-MACRO loaded automatically, then start F-PROT as follows:

			LOAD F-PROT -OLE

FPN now sends the version number and the subversion letter to the FPN
Administration main screen. For example, you could see 2.27c in the
FPN column. Also, FPN Administration now displays version information
for VSEngine.NLM and F-MACRO.DEF. The buffers, scans, and deploying
information was moved to the real-time statistics box to make room for
these new columns.

There is a new error message in FPN: "No available connections from
primary server".
Cause: NetWare (especially version 3.x) only permits the use of a
Specified number of user connections to a server based on the
license. When FPN Administration updates the FPN information on its main
screen it asks the primary server to ask the other servers in the
domain for information about themselves. This requires the use of a
licensed connection. If there are no more connections are available
   you will see the message.
 Effect:
No FPN information is available from some servers; prior to adding
this new message the user saw a message saying that FPN was
"unloaded" from that server. Now you will see the new message.
 Solution:
First try making another server the primary server. It might be
that there are enough connections available at the new one. Or,
wait until someone logs off the servers and frees up a connection.

There is a new option, "Remove all macros if variant is found", now
available in the "Settings" tab for Manual scan, Scheduled scan,
Real-time scan, and Global default scans. If this option is selected,
all macros are removed from any file containing a new or modified
variant of a macro virus. This new option is only available when the
Action to take is "Disinfect". If this option is not selected, and the
Action to take is "Disinfect", files that contain remnants or are
variants of macro infections are renamed.

FIXES
  IN FPN Administration
An erroneous message would sometimes appear saying "Server not loaded
or version incompatibility" when selecting a new server in the listbox
on the main screen. This is now fixed.

The "Close logfile" button now functions properly after "View Logfile"
is selected from the menu.

  IN FPN
We have fixed the problem where connections were created and showed
"NOT LOGGED IN" on the server.

SaveInfectedFiles and Quiet load time options were not reloading after
a deploy. This is now working.

If you were in quiet mode, F-PROT would not permit itself to
be uninstalled. This is now fixed.

SPECIAL NOTES
Macro scanning (real-time and manual) will not occur unless F-MACRO.NLM
is loaded. VSENGINE.NLM will no longer perform macro scanning.

When updating to a new MACRO.DEF file, F-PROT must be unloaded on the
primary server; updating to other servers via the deployment feature
does not require this. FPN Administration now says "Not Loaded" instead
of "unloaded" if FPN, etc. are not loaded on the server.

The "Remove all macros..." option is not compatible with versions of
FPN prior to 2.27 and will cause them to generate an error message.

Release Notes FPN 2.26

        F-PROT.NLM v2.26
        VSEngine.NLM v2.26
        FPNAdmin.exe v2.25
        F-Delay.NLM v.2.26

PRODUCT ENHANCEMENTS
New virus signatures have been added for this release.

A QUICK START guide, in text format, is now included with
all releases of F-PROT Professional for NetWare. The purpose
of the file is to provide brief installation instructions and
an overview of features. The file is named QCKSTFPN.TXT

There are two previously undocumented load-time options available
in FPN: -Purge and -Broadcast.

To protect against possible re-infection, FPN purges deleted files.
Purged files cannot be recovered using the SALVAGE utility. By using
the -PURGE option at load time (LOAD F-PROT -PURGE), deleted files
can be recovered with SALVAGE.

In real-time scans, FPN broadcasts messages when a file cannot be
opened. If you prefer not to see the broadcast message, it can be
turned off by using the -BROADCAST(LOAD F-PROT -BROADCAST) option
at load time.

Information on these files can be viewed from a help screen in two
ways:
1. After installation but prior to loading FPN, type: Load F-PROT help
2. If FPN is currently running, type: F-PROT Load

A new version of F-MACRO is now included in all versions of F-PROT
Professional. F-MACRO is a DOS utility that is used to scan for macro
viruses in Microsoft Word and Excel files. This can be used from DOS
and from a diskette. As of this release, F-MACRO has an additional file
associated with it. That file is named MACRO.DEF. MACRO.DEF contains
the virus signatures and must be located in the same directory as
F-MACRO.EXE. The installation of F-MACRO requires that you copy the
SE_FMAC.EXE (a self executing zipped file located on the installation
diskettes) file to a unique directory. You can then extract it by
executing the file. Once SE_FMAC is run, there will be three files,
MACRO.DEF, F-MACRO.EXE and F-MACRO.TXT. We recommend that you copy
these files to a floppy diskette in addition to leaving them on the
hard drive.

FIXES
The deploy feature was not reloading the new F-PROT NLM. This is now
functioning properly.

We received a few reports of "Resource error" or "File open error:
Resource in use" during real-time scans. This is now fixed.

SPECIAL NOTES
We have temporarily disabled the "Disable connection" option, that is
normally available for real-time scans in FPN Administration. In
Windows 95 and NT, if a workstation is disconnected from the network
(as would be the case using this option), NT and 95 keep trying to
re-establish the network connection. This action causes the workstation
to hang and server utilization to spike and remain very high. In a
future release, the option will be available again.

Release Notes FPN 2.25

        F-PROT.NLM v2.25
        VSEngine.NLM v2.25
        FPNAdmin.exe v2.25
        F-Delay.NLM v.2.25

PRODUCT ENHANCEMENTS
New virus signatures have been added for this release.

The View Log feature in FPN Administration has been improved.

AlertTrack will now send broadcast messages to workstations
which are not running in bindery mode.

Invalid paths are no longer accepted in Manual and Scheduled scans.
This will be reflected by an error message in FPN Administration
indicating the directory was not found.

If the scan engine is unable to open a file to scan, we now report
the occurrence and the reason in the log file; the count is shown
in real-time statistics.

The FPN log file will now have a report summary which shows if
there is an infection from an F-PROT Professional for Windows 3.1
workstation, if the workstation is configured to do so. This is due
to an enhancement in the workstation product. If AlertTrack is
loaded, and an infection is found on the workstation, an alert will
be sent via the method configured in AlertTrack (pager,
broadcast, etc.). With this addition, all F-PROT Professional for
Windows platforms, version 2.25 and above, (3.1, 95, NT) can now
send notification of infection to an FPN server log and AlertTrack.

FIXES
We have fixed a problem which produced an erroneous display
of the number of bytes scanned on very large file servers.

SPECIAL NOTES
FPN now requires a license to load. The license will be installed
automatically. There are two types of licenses - unlimited and demo.
If you have a demo license, then FPN will indicate that and the
expiration date at load time. The license file is F-PROT.LIC. If
the file has expired, is missing or has been tampered with, then
FPN will not load.

Compatibility update-FPN is compatible with the current shipping
versions of the following products. We recommend using only these
current versions.
1. Backup Agent for Open Files v3.0
2. Open File Manager v3.0
3. ARCserve v6.0
4. Backup Exec v7.11a
5. Replica v2.1

AlertTrack Lite Users:
There are two load time switches which can be useful for
troubleshooting.
Switch Symptom
/DEBUG AlertTrack will not load in NetWare 4.X and there
            is no error message.
Procedure: At the console type: LOAD ALERTTRK /DEBUG

This shows the procedures AlertTrack uses and list any error messages.
If there are any reports of duplicates or errors try running DSREPAIR
for 4.X servers. The reason this occurs is NetWare will tolerate minor
damage to directory services. However, AlertTrack cannot and is
incapable of recognizing the precise error, but will not load. If you
have a similar situation with NetWare 3.X, try running VREPAIR.

Switch Symptom
/CLEAN AlertTrack is unable to process messages; it receives them,
            but does not send them.
Procedure: First, unload Alert Track: UNLOAD ALERTTRK
Reload by typing: LOAD ALERTTRK /CLEAN
This resets the configuration. However, the path needs to
be re-established. Unload AlertTrack again and then reload
            to begin messaging: LOAD SYS:ALERTTRK\ALERTTRK

This allows AlertTrack to refresh and begin to resend broadcasts.

*Please note: FPN real-time scans will no longer scan for macro
viruses. Manual and Scheduled scans will accomplish this task. We
will once again include the real-time scan for macro viruses in an
upcoming release.

IF YOU ARE UPDATING A PREVIOUS COPY OF F-PROT FOR NETWARE BE SURE
TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS. DO NOT TRY TO RUN THE NEW VERSION
WITH PREVIOUS VERSIONS.

If you will be installing F-PROT Professional for NetWare at the
file server console, you must now use the SETUP command rather than
INSTALL. It was necessary for us to make this change because there
was a conflict if Novell's INSTALL was running. This was changed
after our manuals were printed, so please be aware. If you use
INSTALL you will be prompted to load SETUP instead.

We have made significant enhancements to F-PROT Professional for NetWare
in this new release. For this reason, there are special installation
instructions which apply only if you are updating from a previous version.

There are 2 installation methods to choose from. If you only have a
small number of servers to update you may prefer to use method 1. If you
have a large number of servers to update you may prefer method 2. Either
method will work.

Method 1. Deinstall F-PROT from all servers. Reinstall
all programs, as if you were performing a first time installation.

Method 2. F-PROT.NLM must be running on the primary and all domain
    servers when you do this.

    1. Copy the file named DEPLOYNW.FPN to the directory where FPN
Administration (the Windows program) is currently located.
This may be either on the workstation in C:\F-PROT or on the server
    in SYS:SYSTEM\F-PROT.

    2. Go to the designated Primary server and insert disk 2
WARNING !! BE SURE FPN IS RUNNING !

    3. Type: LOAD A:SETUP -RELOAD
This will copy the update to the server.

    4. Go back to the workstation and use the Deploy feature from the
client program, FPN Administration, to update other servers.

    5. Run the setup program to update FPN Administration. Choose the
workstation only, NOT the file server.

    6. After Deploying, unload F-PROT on the primary server and then reload.

NEW FEATURES

F-PROT for NetWare now works with NW v.4.11 (Green River),and all versions
of Netframe.

The View Log feature, which allows you to easily view the F-PROT log
from FPN Administration, is available in this release.

Detection and disinfection for Hare, and detection of Laroux (the Excel
macro virus) are supported by this version of F-PROT Professional for
NetWare. Therefore, it is no longer necessary to scan with F-HARE or F-XL.EXE.
We have also added many other new virus signatures. If you will be scanning
Excel files for Laroux with the NetWare version of F-PROT, please be advised
that detection but not disinfection is offered. On any updates the .XL?
extension will be added to all scans if the "Inherit Defaults" option is
enabled. If not, be sure to add the XL? extension to any existing scans.

A new feature has been added to FPN which automatically saves infected files
if the action on infection is either "Disinfect" or "Delete".
This is very helpful if you wish to analyze infected files, or to examine
files prior to disinfection. The infected file will be saved in a sub-directory
in the QUARANT.INE directory. The directory will be automatically created,
as needed, to each volume and will be called either DELETED or DISINFEC.TED.

There is also a new LOAD option available if you prefer to not have infected
files saved. The correct syntax for this option is: -SaveInfectedFiles
or to save keystrokes use: -S Add the option when you are loading F-PROT.
For example: LOAD F-PROT -S All of the F-PROT load options may be viewed
from the console help screen, by typing: LOAD F-PROT HELP prior to loading
FPN.

The ability to skip previously scanned files is now available. This option is
located in the "Settings" dialog box for Manual and Scheduled scans, and also
in Global settings. Enabling the skip option increases the efficiency of scans
by requiring less time and thereby utilizing less resources. If the VSEngine.NLM
is unloaded for any reason, the scan history will be reset. This means that
even if this option is set the file will be scanned again. This safeguard
eliminates the possibility of a file becoming infected while the VSEngine.NLM was
unloaded and also insures that when the scan engine is updated, all files are
re-scanned. By default all files are scanned in manual and scheduled mode, and
skipped in real-time mode. If you wish to skip previously scanned files in
manual and scheduled mode, you need to enable the skip option.

We have also added a new file called F-PROT.HST, in the SYS volume quarantine
directory, which is a history file containing quarantined and saved files.
In an upcoming release, utilities will use the history file to process files
in the quarantine directory. DO NOT MODIFY F-PROT.HST OR RENAME FILES
WITHIN THE QUARANTINE DIRECTORY STRUCTURE.

Real-time statistics will now include statistics for the number of files which
were scanned and Reported Only.

Note: If a file is opened with write privileges, it will always be scanned on
close whether it has been modified or not.

F-MACRO.EXE is now shipped with all F-PROT products. It is a self extracting
file called SE_FMAC.EXE. F-MACRO is the DOS utility which can be used to
disinfect macro viruses for Word and Excel. Please note that 2 new switches
"REMOVEALL", and "REMNANTS" have been added. These new switches are for
MS WORD documents only. After exploding the self extracting file, check the
F-MACRO.DOC file (a text file) for a full description.

**If you are upgrading from v2.22.1 or before, please see the
special installation instructions for the 4/25/96 release of
FPN v2.22.2. **

There have been limited reports worldwide of the Hare virus. We encourage
you to use our DOS utility, F-HARE, which detects and disinfects the three
variants of the virus. While we do not anticipate a high volume of Hare
incidence, we want our customers to avail themselves of the F-HARE utility.
The F-HARE utility is contained in the self-extracting file SE_FHARE.
It can be executed without installation and distributed via e-mail,
throughout your enterprise. When the F-HARE utility is executed memory will
be scanned. To scan drives the usage is:

          F-HARE Drive [/DISINF] [/NOMEM] [/MULTI]

The following is to inform you about the virus:
Hare (also known as HDEuthanasia and Krsna)is a polymorphic, stealth,
multi-partite virus that was initially distributed via the Internet. It
overwrites the contents of hard disks and floppy disks and is Windows 95
aware. The Hare virus will trigger on August 22nd and September 22nd.

Please report any virus incidents to support@commandcom.com

We have added new virus signatures.

If you have an electronic version of the F-PROT Professional for NetWare
manual, please be advised that there are two new features described in the
manual which have not been released for this version. They are: View log,
and Skip previously scanned files. They will be released shortly.

MACRO VIRUS SCANNING:
Files with .DO? extensions will not be scanned on real-time opens, even if
they are in the include list. If a .DO? file has been modified and it is in
the F-PROT queue (the 5 minute window) access to that file will be temporarily
denied. A broadcast message will be sent to the workstation saying
"Open file failed;rescanning! Press CTRL-ENTER" This broadcast can be dis-
abled by adding -B (NO BROADCAST) to the load line. e.g. LOAD F-PROT -B

F-PROT for NetWare provides macro virus identification only. Disinfection must
be accomplished using the F-PROT Professional for Windows program or F-MACRO.
For disinfection using F-MACRO you may download F-MACxxx.EXE from our BBS(main
file library) or FTP (pub directory) site. FPN will provide macro disinfection
in a later release.

There is a new macro virus which is designed to work in spreadsheets
created by Excel 5.0 or greater. This virus is named Laroux. At present
it does not do any damage to files, but simply attaches and spreads.
FPN does not currently search for this file. If you have a concern you will
need use F-PROT Professional from one of the other OS platforms, Windows or DOS
and include the following hex string in the User-defined Virus strings
dialogue box. You must also add the .XL? extension to the
Files to Include list, also located under Preferences.

    0021 0060 0027 206A 0020 206A 00AD 0001 005C 0011
(DO NOT use the spaces shown-they are only for ease of reading)

Disinfection is not available in our scan engine at this time. However,
there is a file called F-XL.EXE located on our FTP and BBS, which will
disinfect. If you discover this string in an Excel file please call
Technical Support at 1-800-423-9147.

At the present time FPN does not work with SFT III. We hope to have this working
in the near future.

The default configuration that you receive with F-PROT Professional for
NetWare will fully protect your system. There is no need to change the settings.
FPN provides additional setting options to be configured for specific needs.

In FPN there is an F-PROT queue. When a file to be scanned is sent to the file
server, it is processed in the F-PROT queue with a delay time of five minutes.
The purpose of this queue is to preserve file server performance. If a file
is accessed while in the queue, it is scanned immediately. Therefore, there is
no chance of infection.

New Features:

We are including a program called TTCONFIG.NLM which will be installed with
F-PROT for NetWare. This program provides easy collection of troubleshooting
information so we can quickly resolve any problems which may occur. We are
also installing an Abend Report in two formats. ABENDRPT.DOC for Word, and
ABENDRPT.TXT which is a text file. This report gives detailed instructions
to help gather the information we need to diagnose why an Abend occurred.

When you type "F-PROT" at the system console you are able to view the command
line commands. We have added a new sub screen for some of the commands in order
to provide greater detail of the available options. The new screen is for
the following commands: Abort, List, and Utilization. To view these options
type the command next to the function. e.g. to see the Abort options available
for aborting scans, type "f-prot a". There are also new commands for viewing
a list of the settings for Global, Manual, Real-time and Scheduled scans.

There is now a help screen for load options. This screen may only be
accessed before F-PROT is loaded. Typing "Load F-PROT H" at the console will
display the available load options. You will see options for controlling buffers,
daily scan, screen display (quiet) and utilization.

The first time you load FPN a full scan, called "Daily" will begin. If you do
not want this scan to occur then you can type: Load F-PROT NoDailyScan
This will only work on the first load and only if there is not an entry in the
INI file.

The range for the FPN utilization setting is now a number between 20 and 100
(previously it was 80). If 100 is used FPN will not be concerned with system
utilization and will not be throttled. For additional information, see the
previous reference to Utilization in the section of this text dated 4/25/96.

5/22/96
Release Notes FPN 2.22.3
        F-PROT.NLM v2.22c
        VSEngine.NLM v2.22.3
        FPNAdmin.exe 2.22

**If you are upgrading from v2.22.1 or before, please see the
special installation instructions for the 4/25/96 release of
FPN v2.22.2. **

F-PROT.NLM v2.22c now works with all versions of ARCserve.

There is a new option available when you install at the server
console (using disk #2) which prevents the daily scan from being
created and running immediately. In addition to having the option
of not modifying the AUTOEXEC.NCF(by using a -A), you may also use a
-S to prevent the scan from being created. Type any of the following:
       LOAD A: INSTALL (-A(UTOEXEC)) (-S(CAN))

The list of F-PROT console commands has three additions.

  1. F-PROT A(bort) M(anual| S(cheduled)| A(ll) S(cans)|({scheduled scan name})
Allows one or all scans to be canceled. For example to cancel a
scheduled scan named BOB, type: F-PROT Abort Scheduled Scan BOB
                               or F-PROT A S S Bob
To cancel all scans in progress type: Abort All Scans or Abort A S

  2. F-PROT L(ist) S(cans)
Provides a list of all manual and scheduled scans which
are active and all idle scheduled scans.

  3. F-PROT Clo(se) S(can) D(elay) = n

Allows you to modify the amount of time before a closed file is scanned.
This number (n) is entered in seconds.
The default setting is 5 minutes, which is 300 seconds. To change the
  default to every 4 minutes, you could type: F-PROT C S D = 240.

(Type "F-PROT" at the server console if you wish to view all
of the available commands.)

At the top right of the F-PROT screen on the server, there is now a
field which shows system Utilization (this is not just for F-PROT).

Note for AlertTrack Lite users: If you clear (delete) the activity log, you
may get a message saying "Activity Log not found" the next time you attempt
to access it. This occurs if there are no new entries in the log. Once new
entries exist (e.g. sending a test message, or other alerts ) you will again
be able to see the Activity Log.

If you are running Windows 95 and are unable to open the F-PROT.LOG file from
the workstation, try using NCOPY (NCOPY F-PROT.LOG NEW.LOG) to copy the file
and then open the log with the new name. The ability to view the log file from
FPN Administration will be available in an upcoming release.

If you are using AlertTrack Lite with F-PROT for NetWare:

Load the AlertTrack Lite NLM before the F-PROT for NetWare NLM, and then do
not unload.

The AlertTrack NLM should only be loaded on a NetWare 3.X server or a
NetWare 4.1 server which is using bindery emulation. (To verify this on
a 4.1 server, at the console type: set Bindery context
If you see anything about bindery context = then you are in bindery mode.)

Workstations must be logged in using bindery mode. If using the VLM
requester to log in to NW 4.1, you must type the /B parameter to
have bindery mode.

Loading the AlertTrack Lite NLM on one server is sufficient.

Additional notes and comments

When a scan is run, it will scan all servers in the "Selected Servers"
list box - not just the one you have highlighted. Remove them from the list
if they are not to be scanned.

When first using F-PROT Professional for NetWare, it is
suggested the first scan include compressed & migrated files,
and the action be Report. This is strictly a precautionary
strategy.
