   1. Getting Started
-------------------------------------------------------------
This product enables access to your tape drive from
Windows 95. You can now use your tape drive for file storage
and retrieval as if it were a hard drive or floppy disk.
A tape icon is displayed in the Taskbar's notification tray,
(located on the end of the Taskbar opposite the Start button)
when a tape is in the drive. Right-click this icon to display
the Tape menu. Double-click this icon to open the Toolkit, where
you can view the contents of your tape, open files, and move
files to and from tape. The toolkit lets you access all tape
operations.

This program automatically detects your tape drive.
However, if you need to remap your tape drive use the
System Properties dialog located in the Windows 95 Control
Panel.

Tapes must be formatted for Seagate Direct Tape Access use.
Refer to the on-line help for configuration and formatting
instructions.

Note: If you are running Arcada Backup for Windows 95
version 1.0, or Conner Backup Exec for Windows 95
version 1.0 upgrade to version 1.15 or greater.

Also, if you are running an older version of another
backup program and experience problems using it
with Seagate Direct Tape Access loaded,
contact your vendor for a solution.

INSTALLATION:
You can create installation floppy disks (for systems that may
not have a CD-ROM drive) from the CD Browswer. Open the CD
Browser and click the floppy disk icon. A dialog box containing
copy instructions appears to guide you through the process.

After installing Seagate Direct Tape Access, a second backup
device may appear in the "Where To Backup" and "Restore From"
dialog boxes in Seagate Backup Exec. Choose the second device
in all cases as the first device may be invalid.
Any device settings (located in the properties for the backup
device in the Device Manager) that were changed to resolve
problems with the backup application, will need to be reset
to work with the newly added backup device. Also, any scheduled
jobs will need to be recreated to pertain to the newly added
backup device.

   2. Special Considerations
-------------------------------------------------------------

   * Modifying files directly on tape can cause an inefficient
use of tape space and may make delays seem excessive.
When you want to edit a file stored on tape, move the file
to your hard drive first, make changes, then move the file
     back to tape.

   * Although you can delete files from tape, be aware that space
on tape is not reclaimed like it is on disks. You must format
the tape before reclaiming space on tape.

Caution: Formatting erases all data on the tape.

   * Seagate Direct Tape Access provides read-only access to tapes written
by most backup programs. Backup tapes are treated as
write-protected media until they are formatted by
Seagate Direct Tape Access. Likewise, a backup
program cannot write to tapes used by Seagate Direct Tape Access
unless they are first erased or formatted by a backup
     program.

   * See your on-line help for additional considerations.

   3. Performance Issues
-------------------------------------------------------------
   * Performance depends on various combinations including
the type of drive, the controller, and the speed of
your machine. On certain drives Seagate Direct Tape Access
is capable of playing AVI, MOV, MPEG, and other types
of video files directly from tape.

   * Files on tape can be used with applications. However,
we do not recommend running software applications
     off the tape.

Caution: Invalid drive settings can cause a General
Failure. Refer to configuration in your
              on-line help.

   4. Known Issues
-------------------------------------------------------------

   * If you insert a tape that your tape drive does not
support, Seagate Direct Tape Access won't recognize the tape.

   * This program does not support QIC-40 tapes.

   * Please make sure that your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files do
not contain duplicated DOS protected mode drivers, such as ASPI
drivers (ASPI4DOS, BTASPI), CD-ROM drivers, or any other drivers
that Windows 95 already provides. You should be using Windows 95
     drivers only.

   * The Adaptec AHA-1510B SCSI controller may cause sluggish
performance. If you experience this problem, contact Adaptec
     for the latest mini-port driver.

   * Seagate Direct Tape Access allows connecting your printer to tape
drives that support daisy chaining. If you experience problems,
make sure you have the latest drivers for your printer installed.
Printer pass-through is only supported under Windows 95.

   * Formatting an EX tape using the Full Format option is not
recommended since some tape drives cannot format EX tapes.
Instead, erase your EX tape using the Quick Format option.
If you need to Format your EX tape, refer to your tape drive
documentation to see if your hardware supports formatting
     EX tapes.

   * If you experience problems with your tape drive while you
are running Norton Utilities, you may want to try suspending
Seagate Direct Tape Access while running and Norton Utilities.

   * If you are running Norton Speed Disk, upgrade to version 2.0.

   * Seagate Direct Tape Access does not support Windows 95 Eject PC
feature when running on portable computers.

   * QEMM 8.00 software is incompatible with
Seagate Direct Tape Access. If you are using QEMM version
     8.00, please contact Quarterdeck for
the latest version of their software.

   * If you are running Seagate Direct Tape Access on
     a Windows 95 system using an FC-20 High-speed floppy
controller and are using HP Colorado Backup for Windows 95,
Seagate Direct Tape Access must be installed after
HP Colorado Backup for Windows 95 in order for both programs
to share the controller. If you have already installed
Seagate Direct Tape Access first, uninstall the program,
reboot your system, and reinstall Seagate Direct Tape Access.

   * If you turn on your tape drive after Windows is running,
you must reboot before Seagate Direct Tape Access can use
     the drive.

   * If your system is not responding and the tape is still
spinning, do not manually remove the tape from the drive.
Manually removing the tape from the drive may result in
data loss. Rebooting or powering down your system at this
time may also result in data loss. We strongly recommend
waiting for the tape operation to complete,
and then rewinding the tape prior to removal.

   * Sporadic SCSI bus resets can occur using an Adaptec
2940 adapter card with an ASPI miniport driver that
was shipped with the original version of Windows 95.
A miniport driver fix is available from Adaptec.

   * Seagate Direct Tape Access uses partitions to store file
system information. Seagate Direct Tape Access supports only
Quick File Access (QFA) tape drives.

   * If both Seagate Direct Tape Access and Colorado Backup for
Windows 95 are installed on your system, you
cannot change the drive mapping for your SCSI device.

   * If you are running Windows 95 and have had Colorado
Backup for Windows 3.1 installed on your system at
any time, Seagate Direct Tape Access may disable your
floppy disk drive. To enable your floppy disk drive,
delete the following line from the [386Enh] section
     of your SYSTEM.INI file:

     DEVICE=\path\CMSWTAPE.386

     Then, reboot your system.

   * To allow for exchanging international data, please be
aware that Seagate Direct Tape Access only allows
7 bit ASCII characters for short names on files or
directories with long names. This could result in
short file names such as "_~1.txt", "_~2.txt", etc.

   * If you are using a virus scanning program on a laptop
with the floppy drive disconnected and have installed
Seagate Direct Tape Access and rebooted your system,
you may experience a KERNEL32.DLL page fault. If this
     happens try the following:

Disable the "Scan disk on Access" option in the virus
scanning program and reboot your system.

     Or,

Connect the floppy drive to the laptop with the
"Scan disk on Access" option enabled.

   * Touchstone's PC'Cillin anti-virus software may experience
page faults while Seagate Direct Tape Access is loaded.
If this occurs, copy the MSVCRT.DLL file from the
Windows\System directory to the PC'Cillin Directory
     and restart the computer.

   * When your data is spanned between two tapes, sometimes
a partial file is not deleted off the first tape. However, the
entire file is safe on your second tape.

   * A Stacker drive cannot be used for File Caching with
Seagate Direct Tape Access. However, Seagate Direct Tape Access will work
     with a DriveSpace3 drive.

   * If you are using an Exabyte IDE-TR4 tape drive
connected to an onboard OPTI Dual PCI controller
and are experiencing lockups while copying files
to or from your tape, a hardware incompatibility
may exist. To resolve this, connect your tape
     drive to another IDE controller.

   5. System Requirements
-------------------------------------------------------------
The system requirements for this product include:

IBM or 100%-compatible 386/DX or higher
        Windows 95
8 Megabytes of RAM or greater
5 Megabytes of free disk space

   6. Copy Exec Introduction
-------------------------------------------------------------
Seagate Copy Exec lets you drag and drop large folders, or even your
entire hard drive, to any Copy Target you create. Copy Targets represent
containers where you can store and later retrieve your files.
Scheduling options enable you to predefine Copy Jobs that
will run automatically in the background while you work.

Seagate Copy Exec provides a simple way to secure your files.
You dont have to use an elaborate backup application or learn
a new program. Seagate Copy Exec integrates seamlessly with
Windows 95 giving you additional Explorer functionality.

Seagate Copy Exec expands the capability of conventional copy, providing
features that you cant get with any other program. Now, your copy
isnt canceled due to an open file, Seagate Copy Exec skips open files and
continues the copy operation. Now, you dont have to waste time and
space recopying existing files, Seagate Copy Exec allows you to copy only your
new and changed files. And after you perform a copy, the files access
date isnt changed, Seagate Copy Exec keeps the files original access date
for you.

Best yet, Seagate Copy Exec lets you take advantage of your storage device;
it works with any device you have. Seagate Copy Exec supports removable
media, such as Zip drives, Jaz drives, and floppy disks. You can also
use Seagate's Direct Tape Access program to drag and drop files to tape,
just like you would to a floppy disk.

With Seagate Copy Exec you can:

Perform drag and drop backups quickly or efficiently organize your
files with Copy Targets. Your first Copy Target has been created for
you and appears on your desktop.

Schedule your copies to run once a day, once a week, or once a month.
Whatever your needs, the Scheduler can help you secure your files on
a regular basis. The Job Wizard guides you through the process of
creating, running, and scheduling copies. These predefined copies are
   called Copy Jobs.

Personalize your copy operations. Save space and time by setting an
Option that copies only your new and changed files. Or, set an option
that copies only specific types of files, for example, all of your .doc
files. Choose from several option combinations to make Seagate Copy Exec
work best for you. Find the options on the Properties page of your Copy
   Target.

Enjoy the convenience of accessing Seagate Copy Exec from right inside
the Explorer. Just right-click on a drive, folder, or file in Explorer
and select one of the additional Seagate Copy Exec menu items to begin using
   Seagate Copy Exec.

Ensure you have all the details of your copy operation. The Copy Log
keeps a record all the results. Double-click the Copy Log icon in the
Windows 95 notification tray to view the log.

   7. Copying Write Protected Files
-------------------------------------------------------------
If you experience problems copying files from a location that is write
protected, disable the advanced option: Leave Access Date on Original
File Unchanged.

   8. Scheduling Options Only Available with SAGE
-------------------------------------------------------------
If you do not have the Microsoft Plus! System Agent (SAGE) on your system,
the scheduling options are not available.

   9. Quaterdeck's Cleansweep 3.0
-------------------------------------------------------------
Seagate Copy Exec will not install properly when Quaterdeck's
Cleansweep 3.0 is installed. Run SCEWONCE.EXE from Seagate Copy Exec's
program's system directory after restarting your system.
