LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES

Latin American studies is the study of the Latin American culture including history, government, literature, religion, etc.

Students interested in Latin American studies should enjoy research and writing, and have a wide range of interests. They should also demonstrate success in history, humanities, and foreign language. In addition to a competitive college preparatory program, helpful high school courses include a balance of art, music, social studies, sciences, and foreign language.

Most area studies programs require supplementary general education (English, social sciences, natural and physical sciences, humanities, etc.) in a liberal arts environment. Typical area studies courses include literature, language, culture and society, government and politics, history, and critical methods in cultural analysis.

Job placement requirements vary depending on the area of study and past experience. Many jobs are tied to university and government teaching and research programs. This field also looks for extensive graduate work.
