GEOGRAPHY

Geography is the study of where people, animals, and plants live and of their relationship with earth features. Location, spatial relationships, regional characteristics, and forces of change are all important components of the study of geography.

Students interested in geography should display strong skills in communication, research, analysis, and perseverance as well as demonstrate success in mathematics, science, social studies, and English. In addition to a normal college preparatory program, helpful high school courses include biology, physical science, economics, psychology, English, and history.

Most geography majors require extensive work in the liberal arts. Typical geography courses include economic geography, world regional geography I, II, political geography, global conflict and environmental impact, and geography of Asia. Field experiences are an integral part of all programs.

Job placement usually depends on advanced degrees. Positions usually can be found in education (teaching/research), government (park service/census), and business (resource management/land use).
