SOCIOLOGY

Sociology is the study of the individuals, groups, and institutions that make up society and usually includes investigation of population, social behavior, social institutions, cultural influence, and social change. Because of this wide range, sociology frequently overlaps the other social sciences.

Students interested in sociology should enjoy research, investigation, analysis, writing, and working with people as well as demonstrate success in science, social studies, and English. In addition to a normal college preparatory program, helpful high school courses include psychology, economics, English, and history.

Most sociology majors require extensive work in the liberal arts. Typical courses include introduction to social research, crime and delinquency, gender in American society, interpersonal and intergroup behavior, and occupations and professions. Field experiences are an integral part of all programs.

Job placement depends upon degree level and experience. Positions are usually found in education, government, and the human resource and marketing side of business.
