BIOLOGY

Biology is the study of living things and their relationship to the environment. There are many specialties most of which require advanced degrees. Many undergraduate programs require a concentration within that particular department. Examples of concentrations include pre-veterinary science, pre-med, marine biology, zoology, botany and microbiology.

Students interested in biology should enjoy independent research and be able to communicate clearly and concisely as well as demonstrate success in social sciences, mathematics, and the sciences. In addition to a competitive college preparatory program, helpful high school courses include biology, chemistry and physics.

Most biology majors require supplementary general education (English, social sciences, natural sciences, humanities, etc.) courses in a liberal arts environment. Typical biology courses include introduction to biology, genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, and biological research.

Job placement requirements vary depending on the area of study and degree level. Many jobs are tied to university and government research grant programs.
