CLASSICAL LANGUAGES

The study of classical languages includes primarily Greek and Latin and follows the guidelines of simplicity, structure, and consistency. Both languages have generated many English roots and root words and, therefore, are helpful vocabulary building languages. In addition, Latin grammar has many English counterparts and is a good grammatical training tool. Many languages in the Indo-European family can be tied to Latin and Greek. For example, the English word mother in Latin is mater, in Spanish is madre, in German is mutter and in Russian is mat'.

Studying the classics also gives students insights to the qualities of classicism and the foundations of the Greek and Roman Empires. Greek and Latin continue to serve as a written and sometimes spoken language for religious, legal, scientific, and medical communications.
