ENGLISH

English, the most popular major in the United States, is the study of the English language including literature, grammar, and writing. Strong communication skills are important to the majority of professional careers, and English is an excellent vehicle to develop those skills.

Students interested in English should be creative, analytical, and perceptive. In addition to a normal college preparatory program, helpful high school courses include English, psychology, history, and art. English programs require supplementary general education (social sciences, natural and physical sciences, humanities, etc.) in a liberal arts environment. Typical English courses include expository composition, creative writing, American literature, British literature, modern American novel, English drama to 1600, and comparative literature.

Job placement varies depending on the area of specialization, experience, and career field desired. Many English majors find positions in the publishing world.
