NURSING

Nursing is the study of both preventive health care and caring for sick people. Most nursing programs fall under professional nursing (4 to 5 years of college) or technical nursing (2 to 3 years of training). Name designations for majors frequently include nursing (RN, registered nurse), nursing administrator, nursing (post-RN), nurse anesthetist, and nursing assistant.

Students interested in nursing should be patient, sympathetic, organized, and observant. They should also be able to make decisions quickly and objectively and demonstrate success in mathematics, science, and social studies. In addition to a normal college preparatory program, helpful high school courses include psychology, health, chemistry and biology.

Typical nursing courses include basic concepts in nursing I, II, III, nursing of adults with alterations in health, nursing of children with alterations in health, computers in health care, nursing management, and professional nursing practicum. Field and hands on experiences are an important part of all nursing programs.

Job placement depends on academic performance, area of specialization and geographical area desired.
