ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

Elementary education is usually defined as the study of teaching students leading to certification in grades one to six. Certification is required in all states but the requirements may differ.

Students interested in elementary education should be energetic, organized, patient, and enthusiastic as well as demonstrate success in mathematics, science, social studies, and English. Child care, teacher's aide, or camp/recreational counseling experiences are extremely valuable. In addition to a normal college preparatory program, helpful high school courses include psychology, English, and early childhood development.

Most elementary education majors require extensive work in the liberal arts. Typical elementary education courses include methods of instruction, social context of education, media and technology, mathematics for teachers, teaching of reading, and public policy. Field experiences are an integral part of all programs.

Job placement depends on academic performance and geographical area desired.
