FASHION DESIGN

The study of fashion design prepares students to design clothing and accessories. Preparation usually involves a four year degree and can be very competitive.

Students interested in fashion design should be creative, communicative, resourceful, and flexible as well as demonstrate a knowledge of textiles, fabrics, and fashion trends. In addition to a normal college preparatory program, helpful high school courses include psychology, English, social studies, art, and home economics. Thought towards developing a portfolio should begin as early as the sophomore year as the competition to the well-known fashion design programs can be highly competitive.

Most fashion design majors require extensive work in the arts. Typical courses include basic apparel techniques, history of fashion, apparel design I, II, Introduction to computers, and fashion illustration. In addition, extensive hands-on intern experience needs to be developed.

Job placement depends on talent, experience and ability to deliver desired concepts on time.
