Canvas 5 for Windows 95 and Windows NT

This document contains last-minute information on Canvas 5, version 5.0.1. For general installation instructions, refer to the "Getting Started" printed manual. If you need additional help, see "Contacting Deneba Software" at the end of this document.

For the latest information, corrections, and updates, refer to the "Release notes" topic in the Canvas on-line Help system.

Installing Canvas 5
In Getting Started, the first step of the procedure "Installing Canvas 5 on Windows systems" should be modified to read:

"1. On the Canvas 5 CD-ROM or Disk 1, double-click the file 'Canvas 5 Installer.' Then, click Continue in the startup screen."

Upgrading an older version of Canvas 5
You can install the new version of Canvas 5 in the same directory as the old version. The installation program gives you the option of saving or overwriting your current Canvas 5 settings file (Canvas5.SET) and user dictionary (user.dic) with the default settings of the new version. The Canvas 5 settings file stores information about the current inks, strokes, type styles, and object styles; the user dictionary stores words you added to the spell checking dictionary. To save your custom settings and dictionary, do not overwrite these files.

To keep the older version of Canvas 5, you can also install the newer version in a different directory. However, the installation program updates the system registry with information about the location of the new Canvas tools. If you run the older version of Canvas, you need to specify the directory for the old Canvas Tools directory. You can do this by holding down the Shift-key immediately after launching Canvas, and locating the old Canvas Tools directory in the dialog box. When you launch the new version of Canvas, you need to repeat this procedure to specify the location of the new Canvas Tools directory.

To view the Release notes:
1. After installing Canvas, double-click the CANVAS.HLP file in the On-line Help folder, which is inside the Canvas5 folder. Or, with Canvas running, choose "Contents" in the Help menu.

2. Click the "Release notes" topic on the Contents page in the Canvas Help window.
