   1. Installing Seagate Backup for Windows 95
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run the "setup" utility in the folder containing the compressed
files. This utility will launch InstallSHIELD which will take you
through the process of creating folders and uncompressing the files
that comprise Seagate Backup for Windows 95.

   2. Uninstalling Seagate Backup for Windows 95
------------------------------------------------------------------------
To uninstall Seagate Backup for Windows 95, follow these steps:

1) Ensure that Seagate Backup for Windows 95 is not running.
2) Close all folders.
3) Go to Start menu -> Settings -> Control Panel, click Control Panel
4) Double click on "Add/Remove Programs" icon.
5) Select "Seagate Backup" from the list of programs.
6) Click on the "Add/Remove" button to uninstall, confirm by clicking
   the "Yes" button.
7) If the system asks to remove any shared files, please answer "no",
as these files are possibly needed by another application.

Note: The uninstall feature only deletes files installed by
Seagate Backup for Windows 95, not files created by the program such
as the catalog file.

   3. Formatted tapes for QIC backups
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before performing a QIC tape backup operation, make sure you have
enough formatted QIC tapes to accommodate the data.

   4. NetWare Bindery
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The NetWare Bindery and extended attributes are not backed up. Only
native file attributes and file data are backed up on NetWare volumes.
Please refer to Help for more information.

Note: NetWare bindery data cannot be restored from DOS/Windows 3.1
backup sets using this release of Seagate Backup for Windows 95.

   5. Reporting
------------------------------------------------------------------------
After scheduled jobs complete, a report for each job will appear on
the screen. To avoid viewing the reports, uncheck this option in the
Preferences dialog in the Tools menu. Reports for jobs that are run
by pressing the Start button can be viewed when the job is complete.
The five most recent reports can be viewed or printed using the Report
option in the Tools menu.

   6. Restoring the Registry
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If the Registry is selected for a restore job, a dialog box will come
on screen requesting verification. A check box is provided allowing
you to enable or disable restoration of the hardware and system
settings. This option should only be checked if you are certain
that your system's hardware configuration and settings have not
changed since you last backed up the Registry. Please refer to the
Help or User Guide for more information.

   7. Irwin AccuTrak devices
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This product does not support Irwin AccuTrak devices.

   8. Device configuration
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you receive a "No Devices Found" message when starting
Seagate Backup for Windows 95 or you're having configuration problems,
follow these steps.

1) Configure the high speed tape controller if you have one.
2) Exit Seagate Backup for Windows 95.
3) Right click on My Computer.
4) Click on Properties.
5) Click Device Manager tab.
6) Verify that the "TAPE" icon is present in the hardware tree.

    a) If the TAPE icon is present, double click the icon and verify that
your drive is correctly identified. If an '!' or '?' appears in
front of the device, you have an IRQ, DMA or I/O Address conflict.

    b) If the TAPE icon is not present in tree, shut down the computer,
check the power and data cables, power up, repeat steps 4-7.
If the TAPE icon is still not present in the hardware tree, go to
Add Hardware utility in the Control Panel. If it is still not
detected by Windows 95, call the device manufacturer.

On rare occasions when the tape device is recognized by Windows 95 in
the tree, but Seagate Backup for Windows 95 is reporting
"unknown device found", follow these steps to run the Plug and Play
tape utility:

1) Click Start on the Toolbar.
2) Click Run.
3) Enter the path C:\Seagate Backup\SYSTEM\PNPWTAPE and run it.

Try loading Seagate Backup for Windows 95 again and see if the problem
is solved. If not, contact technical support.

   9. Power management conflicts
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Computer systems having power management features may conflict with
the backup program. If the computer system activates its power
saving mode during a backup or any other tape operation, you may
experience any of the following symptoms:

1) The video screen may turn black and you won't be able to return
   the system to normal operation.
2) The tape drive may continually run or "shoeshine".
3) The keyboard may be active, but the monitor will not.

If you experience any of these problems, reboot the system, turn all
power management features OFF (use AC power with laptops), and start
the tape operation again.

  10. Adaptec AHA-1510B SCSI controller
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Adaptec AHA-1510B SCSI controller may cause sluggish performance.
If you experience this problem, contact Adaptec for the latest
mini-port driver.

  11. Loading Seagate Backup for Windows 95 for scheduled jobs
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seagate Backup for Windows 95 may be loaded automatically when Windows 95
is started by selecting a checkbox in the Preferences dialog in the
Tools menu. The checkbox is labeled as follows:

Run at Windows startup if scheduled jobs exist.

This box is selected by default. If it is not checked and backup jobs
are scheduled, Seagate Backup for Windows 95 must be started prior to a
job's scheduled run time.

  12. Delay after tape erase or canceled backup
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A delay of a few seconds to several minutes will result after canceling
a backup job or after using the Erase Tape tool. Hard disk activity will
occur while information is removed from the catalog. Longer delays occur
if the tape contains a large number of files.

  13. Automatic tape naming
------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are times when it is necessary for Seagate Backup for Windows 95
to generate a unique name for a tape. This occurs if the tape has not
been previously named and must be overwritten during a scheduled backup
job, or logged during a restore job using the view from tape. The
application will use the "job name" if it exists, or the words
"Backup Tape" followed by a three digit number from 001 to 999. If a
tape has a name, it will always be preserved.

  14. Uninstalling Conner Backup Exec for Windows 3.1
------------------------------------------------------------------------
To fully uninstall the Windows 3.1 backup product:

1) Delete the files and the folder where the program is installed.
2) Delete the backup program group.
3) Delete the "Device= C:\FOLDER\VFINTD.386" statement in the
SYSTEM.INI file. FOLDER is the folder in which the software
was installed (usually QBWIN or CBWIN).

4. Delete "SCHEDULER.EXE" from the Load= line in the [Windows] section
of the WIN.INI file (only if the Scheduler was installed by the
   backup program).

5. Delete the "set=C:\FOLDER\CBWIN.EXE^.set" from the [Extensions]
   section of the WIN.INI file.

6. Delete the CBWIN.INI or QBWIN.INI (or CBB.INI) file located in the
   Windows folder.

  15. Reading QIC-80 backup sets
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Version 1.1 of Seagate Backup for Windows 95 is unable
to read data that spans from a QIC-80 WIDE tape to a normal width
QIC-80 tape if the data was originally written using Version 1.0.

This is not a problem if the tapes were written with Version 1.1.

  16. Tape capacity
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remaining tape capacity is not indicated for all tape drives.
This function is hardware dependent.

  17. Known incompatibilities
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following incompatibilities exist between Seagate Backup for Windows 95
and other programs:

1) Seagate Backup for Windows 95 is incompatible with all
Norton Utilities. Make sure that these programs are not
running during backup and restore operations. Additionally,
the Norton file FSVUNDO.DAT is not automatically excluded by
Seagate Backup for Windows 95 during operations and may
cause an error during file verify.

2) Installing Seagate Backup for Windows 95 on to a disk drive
that has been compressed with Stacker95 may cause the system
to lock up. The program should not be installed on hard drives
   using this compression.

  18. Lost selections
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If file selections have been made for a drive that is no longer
available when Seagate Backup for Windows 95 is launched,
those selections will be lost.

  19. Archive bit
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The archive bit on a file is removed immediately after it is backed up.
If the user cancels a backup operation in mid-progress, the archive bits
for some files will be removed even though they are not backed up.
If a backup is canceled, it is recommended that a full backup be
performed immediately to guarantee that all files are safely stored.

  20. Possible "hangs" with AccuTrak tapes
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you insert any of the following cartridges into the drive, the
application may hang. To correct this it will be necessary to remove
the cartridge and power your computer off and then on to reset the
machine:
        -- An AccuTrak tape
-- Any degaussed (bulk erased) tape

  21. Possible delays with View from Tape
------------------------------------------------------------------------
It may take a long time (over 30 minutes) when using
"View from Tape" on a full or almost full tape.

  22. Possible invalid command ref 07-20-23-00-8081
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Using minicartridge tapes (2080,QIC-80,3010,3020, etc.) in the
CTM4000 (IDE) or CTM3200 (SCSI) tape drive may result in an error
specifying an invalid command and reference number 07-20-23-00-8081.

  23. Possible problems with IDE chipsets
------------------------------------------------------------------------
On some PC's, the Windows 95 operating system software is unable to
properly recognize and configure the IDE chipset, which controls the
IDE hard disk, CD-ROM, and IDE tape drive. If this is the case,
Windows 95 will force all accesses to IDE devices to occur
sequentially, sometimes referred to as serialized access. Serialized
access implies each IDE operation must complete before the next access
can begin. Normally the delays caused by sequential operation are not
apparent to the customer because hard drive and CD-ROM accesses
complete quickly. However when using the IDE tape backup device,
there are certain tape operations that require longer periods of time
to complete, such as a tape retension. In such a case, a noticeable
delay in accessing the other IDE devices will occur. This will give
the appearance that the backup software is hung. It's not, the system
is just waiting for the IDE tape operation to complete. If you
experience these unusual delays when using the IDE tape backup device,
it may be necessary to obtain a third party IDE controller card. An
Acculogic IDE controller card is available for purchase from Seagate Express
at 1-800-561-0968.

  24. Updated versions of third party drivers
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please make sure you have the most recent versions of third party drivers
for Windows 95 installed. An example of these would be drivers for SCSI
controllers.

  25. Restoring QIC-80, 3010, and 3020 Backup Tapes
------------------------------------------------------------------------
In rare cases, a valid tape may be reported as not readable by the
drive. The drive will either continue to prompt for a tape to be
inserted, or report an unrecoverable hardware error. To restore data
from the tape in this case, use the tape drive and software that
created the backup.
