A

ABS Database

A disk-based database containing static directory information for use by the Address Book Server.

ABS Server

Address Book Server. The server that processes HTML and LDAP requests for directory information.

Active Server Pages (ASP)

The Internet Explorer 3.01 script interpreter that provides support for the ActiveX server components that accompany Microsoft Internet Server software.

ASCII text

American Standard Code for Information Interchange. A code used to convert letters, numbers, punctuation, and control codes into digital form that can be processed by a computer.i

ActiveX server component

The ActiveX control that provides support for Web pages.

authentication

The process of verifying an identity.

B

Browser

Software running on a client that interprets the markup of HTML files posted on the World Wide Web, formats them into Web pages, and displays them to the user.

CGI

Common Gateway Interface.i

Challenge-Response Authentication

An Internet protocol for authentication that transparently sends a challenge to the browser, asking for the log on credentials of the user. This is only valid for Windows NT Domain accounts, not for local users on the local Web server.

Client computer

Computer that is connected to a server to send and receive information. Equivalent to the user’s computer.

Common Gateway Interface

An actual executable or batch file that is activated by a user with a click on a URL. Can be written in a compiled language, such as C, or written in an interpreted language, such as Perl. One of the primary uses of CGI scripts in HTML documents is to process information received from a form. You need execute permissions to use CGI scripts on servers.

Data center

The collection of computers that support an online service or Internet service provider.

DNS

Domain Name System. A distributed database that allows applications to translate IP addresses for a particular network from unfriendly 32-bit addresses to a domain name.

E

E-mail

Electronic mail. A service that allows members to send messages and files to one another over a network.

GUID

Globally Unique Identifier.

Home page

The main page of a World Wide Web site. Also called a Start page.i

HTML

Hyper Text Markup Language. A system of marking up or tagging a document so it can be published on the World Wide Web.

HTML Interface

User interface that uses HTML browsers. Allows for remote administration.

HTTP

Hyper Text Transport Protocol. The standard Internet protocol that defines the way Web clients (browsers) and Web servers communicate.

I

IIS

Microsoft Internet Information Server. A network file and application server that transmits information by using the Hyper Text Transport Protocol (HTTP).

IIS HTTP service

The Web publishing service in IIS, also called the World Wide Web Publishing Service.

ILS

Internet Locator Server. The server that processes HTML and LDAP requests for dynamic directory information.

ILS Database

A RAM-based database containing dynamic directory information for use by the Address Book Server and the Internet Locator Server.

Internet Mail and News

The mail and news service client that ships with Internet Explorer version 3.0.

IP

Internet Protocol. Refers to the transport used for Internet access.i

ISAPI

Internet Server Application Programming Interface. ISAPI is the IIS counterpart of CGI. ISAPI is a more efficient facility for running programs on the server.

ISM

Internet Service Manager. ISM is the administration tool for IIS that installs the client for managing Internet services, such as SMTP, POP3, World Wide Web, Gopher, FTP, and others.

LAN

Local area network.

LDAP

Lightweight Directory Access Protocol.

Mi

MAPI

Microsoft Messaging API.

Membership Agent

A key component of Microsoft Membership System that is used to access the Security Database to allow authentication and access control for a distinct membership community. The Membership Agent provides entry point for the Membership Brokers to gain access to security database and other back-end services.

Membership System

Enables service providers who want to provide services on the Internet or an intranet. The system includes functionality to register new users, authenticate users, authorize access to areas of the service on a controlled basis, and generate billing events for processing by an external billing engine. The full system includes the Membership Broker site and the Membership Backend site.i

Microsoft Commercial Internet System

Part of the BackOffice family of server products.

NTLM

Windows NT LAN Manager. The security protocol of Windows NT.

Performance Monitor counters

Monitoring criteria that can be selected in Windows NT Performance Monitor to track performance of selected objects. Counters show current configuration information, current activity, the largest recorded values for current activities, and total or cumulative counts of operations.

Ping utility

Packet InterNet Groper (PING). The ping command verifies connections to a remote computer or computers by sending ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) echo packets to the computer and listening for echo reply packets.

Remote procedure calls.

SNMP

Simple Network Management Protocol. An Internet standard protocol for collecting and transmitting management or status information about the operation of a computer. Typically, an "agent" on a remote computer runs an MIB (Management Information Base) in memory that gathers data on network or computer performance. The agent can be directed to transmit this data via the SNMP protocol to a central console for display.

SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server.

SSL

Secure Sockets Layer technology. An encryption scheme that disguises the contents of packets being sent on a TCP/IP network.

T

Token

Tokens are access control objects. A Token is associated with a service or area of content. If the user has rights on that Token, they can access the area.

Ui

URL

Uniform Resource Locator. An address to an object, document, page, or other destination on the Internet or an intranet.
