Improving Operations

ILS provides a number of indicators for evaluating how the system is working and what should be done to improve it. Proactive evaluation and tuning of the server environment requires knowing how to interpret these indicators. This section discusses ways of using existing information as a basis for improving the operation of the system over time.

Planning for Increased Capacity

Capacity can be measured in terms of ability to hold ILS location data, as well as the ability to deliver that information to clients. ILS receives and delivers information via the LDAP and WWW services within an ILS server. Capacity planning involves understanding, tracking, and planning for the ILS component. ILS uses a memory resident database to store location data. As you bring on more clients, you will need more RAM. Because ILS needs sufficient memory to store the entire database in RAM, increasing ILS RAM storage increases capacity.

iiILS performance can be improved by increasing the amount of RAM available for the database. To determine the amount of RAM available for the database, you need to monitor the server for memory use. For details on monitoring free memory space, see "Monitoring ILS" in Chapter 4.

Improving Administration

ILS administration can be improved in the following ways:
