Setting Up and Configuring ILS

This section provides detailed instructions for installation. The ILS Setup program is designed to install ILS from the ILS computer.

ILS requires the Active Server Pages script processor to provide HTML access to ILS. Microsoft Internet Information Service version 3.0 includes the ASP processor. If you have not already installed IIS version 3.0 with Active Server Pages scripting, do so before you set up ILS.

For information about installing IIS 3.0, see the IIS documentation.

After you have set up IIS version 3.0 on the computer you plan to use for ILS, you can run the ILS Setup program.

To set up ILS

  1. Make sure that you are logged on to the server as an administrator.
  2. Exit all running Windows programs.
  3. On the ILS server, insert the installation disc in the CD-ROM drive.
    -or-
Access the version of ILS you downloaded from the Web.
  4. On the installation disc, run the Setup that is appropriate for your computer type (x86 or alpha).
    -or-
Double-click the downloaded version of ILS to start Setup automatically. i

Setup takes you through a series of well-annotated screens. You will be asked configuration questions about directory locations for files, account names, and similar data. The following table summarizes the questions asked and provides tips on the appropriate answers:

Click Next to accept the default directory. To change the directory, click Browse and select another from the list or type the directory name you want to use.

Select Components

Components

  • ILS Service
  • Sample .htm and .asp files
  • ILS documentation

For a standard ILS setup, make sure that all check boxes are selected. Setup installs the LDAP and ILS services, the sample ILS Web page server side components and scripts, and the ILS documentation as Microsoft Word files.

You can choose not to install all components. To use ILS, however, you must install ILS Service.

Click Next.

Running Services

Stop all running IIS services.

The Running Services message posted only if IIS services are running.

Click Yes to stop the running services. Setup posts an informational message as each service is stopped.

If you click No, Setup will halt.

Warning

Active Server Pages script processor.

If you selected the sample .htm and .asp files, Setup checks your computer for the existence of the ASP script processor.

Tip A warning appears if Setup cannot find the ASP processor. To use the ILS Web pages, install IIS version 3.0 with the ASP script processor.

Choose Destination Location

The directory that LDAP will use as the root directory.

Default: C:\Inetpub\LdapRoot.

To change the directory, click Browse. Click a directory name in the list, or type the directory name you want to use.

Click Next to accept the directory and continue.

Folder Selection

Folder on the Start menu for adding the ILS items.

Default: Internet Locator Server.

Click Next to accept the default folder. To change the folder, click another from the list, and then click Next.

Confirm Setup Information

Current Settings

At this point, Setup presents a screen that contains a summary of your settings. You can view these settings and use the Back button to make changes before proceeding.

Important When you click Next, Setup begins copying files. Make sure that you are satisfied with these settings before you click Next to begin the install process.

Setup

Copying program files

Setup creates directories and loads program files, libraries, HTML files, ILS error message definitions, ILS registry keys. Setup also restarts the IIS WWW service.

A progress indicator tracks Setup through each step of the operation.

Setup Complete

  • I would like to view the Start Page.
  • I would like to start the Administration Tool.

Selecting the first option instructs Setup to open the Start Page, a Web page that contains introductory information about ILS.

Selecting the second option instructs Setup to start ISM to use as the Administration Tool for ILS.

Make your selections and click Finish.

iThe final step of the setup process restarts the WWW and LDAP services.

ii

Using the Start Page

ILS uses an HTML start page that comes up after install. The ILS Start Page contains the following items:

Introduction

Contains introductory information and a high-level functionality description of Internet Locator Server.

Documentation

Contains links to the documentation formatted in HTML and Microsoft Word. The documentation includes information about configuring and operating ILS and instructions on writing ILS Web pages.

Readme File

Opens the readme file for ILS.

Sample Templates

Contains templates with ideas and samples to help you get started.

Verify Installation

Provides a Web page that lets you verify your installation, including the ability to create a new listing, search for the listing, and delete the listing you created.

For a description of how to use the verification page, see "Confirming That Setup Was Successful" later in this section.

Microsoft BackOffice Live

Describes other Microsoft BackOffice products and provides information about product support.

ii

Uninstalling ILS

ILS can be uninstalled using the Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel. Should it be necessary, these options can be used to make a clean uninstall of the programs.

To uninstall the ILS server

  1. Log on to the ILS server as an administrator.
  2. Quit all Internet services, Internet Service Manager, Key Manager, Windows NT Event Viewer, and Performance Monitor. These can interfere with Setup.
  3. Open the Windows NT Control Panel and double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. In the list of programs in the Add/Remove Properties dialog box, click Internet Locator Server, and click Add/Remove.
  5. To the question "Are you sure you want to completely remove the selected application and all of its components?" click Yes.
  6. After the server has been uninstalled, click OK to close the dialog box.

Note   When Internet services are running, ILS uninstall marks certain files for delete, but does not complete the deletion until after the computer is restarted. To avoid this situation, make sure that you stop all Internet services, including LDAP, NNTP, WWW, Gopher, FTP, Mail, and others before you uninstall any software. If you do encounter this problem, you can correct it by reinstalling the software after you restart your Windows NT server.

iiiiii

Confirming That Setup Was Successful

iThe Web page Verify.asp gets installed with ILS and is designed to confirm that Setup was successful.

Note   You must have IIS version 3.0 with the Active Server Pages script processor to use this Web page.

To confirm that Setup was successful

  1. If you elected not to run the verify page at the end of ILS Setup, do so now. Load your browser and point to http://computer_name/ILS/Verify/Verify.htm,
where computer_name represents the name of your ILS server.
  2. The verification page displays a series of annotated steps for testing access to the ILS database by way of the IIS WWW service, the verify script, the ILS directory DLL, the ILS database DLL, and the ILS database. Follow the instructions to add, search for, modify, and delete a listing.

Troubleshooting Setup

If you have a problem during Setup, the following troubleshooting tip may help.

Setup Failure

iiiiProblem: Setup did not run to completion.

Cause 1: Setup does not have administrative rights.

Solution 1: Log on with administrative rights to run ILS Setup.

Cause 2: There is not enough disk space for the installation option you chose.

Solution 2: Check the amount of space you have available. If necessary, free up disk space and try again.

Cause 3: A running program is interfering with Setup.

Solution 3: Verify that WWW, LDAP, and any Web pages you may have run are closed. Close all other programs and try again.

Problem: Sample templates not working.

Cause: ActiveX not installed or functioning, WWW service not started or LDAP service not started. Sample files have become corrupt.

Solution: If WWW and LDAP are not running, try starting them. Stop all IIS services and attempt to launch a sample page. Restart the service, reboot, and try again. Reinstall the sample files.

Problem: LDAP service cannot be started. Error returned on missing module.

Cause: The DLL file is missing. Under certain circumstances, such as when software is uninstalled, files are marked for deletion but are not deleted until the computer is restarted. Because you may not restart your computer after uninstalling software, this problem may not appear right away.

Solution: Make sure that you stop all Internet services, including LDAP, NNTP, WWW, Gopher, FTP, Mail, and others before you install or uninstall any software. If you encounter this problem, you can correct it by reinstalling the software.
