ILS offers the following features to an Internet service provider offering Web services:

• The ability to create dynamic network communities
• Easy-to-use methods for providing locator services at your site
• Both HTTP and LDAP access to the locator directory
• User authentication (basic and Microsoft Distributed Password Authentication (DPA), a feature of Microsoft Membership System)
• Server-side HTML scripting through an ILS ActiveX™ server component
• Integration with the SNMP MIB and Performance Monitor counters to allow measuring of activity and system performance

Using Real-Time Communications Applications with ILS

ILS supports real-time communications applications that use the ILS LDAP protocol or the ULP protocol for registering a user as being online. Each user is associated with a list of applications they have for interacting with others. When a user starts a real-time communications application and connects to an ILS server, the user is registered as being online. These applications continually refresh the online listing.
