=====================================
4. ERROR MESSAGES AND THEIR SOLUTIONS
=====================================

The following error messages don't appear in your LANtastic
documentation. Commonly received error messages are
documented in two files (ERRS_95.PDF and ERRS_DW.PDF), as
explained in the LANtastic Installation and Setup Manual.

-----------------------------------------------------------
A. "Cannot locate network computer name or resource."

   If you receive this error when expanding the Entire
   Network tree in either the Assign Drives, Assign Printers
   or LANtastic Connections window - OR when expanding the
   Microsoft network tree in the Browse Network window -
   it means one of two things. Either:
   - The Client for Microsoft networks is installed but no
     Microsoft servers in your workgroups are available on
     the network at this time.
   OR
   - The Client for Microsoft networks is installed but your
     workgroup name doesn't match the workgroup name for the
     Microsoft servers on the network.

   The solution is to remove the Client for Microsoft
   networks OR correct your workgroup name. To perform
   either task, right-click the Network Neighborhood icon
   on your desktop, then select Properties.

-----------------------------------------------------------
B. "386MAX VxD Error V1014: Disk Cache or other file I*/O
   software using EMS memory. 386MAX VxD not loaded.
   Windows initialization terminated. Press any key to
   return to DOS."

   If you receive this error, you're using EMS
   (non-conventional) memory with Qualitas' 386Max, which
   doesn't allow disk emulator use of EMS under Windows.
   When using 386Max, use either the default of
   /MEM=CONVENTIONAL or use /MEM=XMS. You can change this
   setting in LANtastic server startup parameters. Further
   information about 386MAX's memory configuration can be
   found in Qualitas' documentation.

-----------------------------------------------------------
C. "FATAL ERROR: Out of memory in EMemCalloc, caller: 7
   press any key..."

   If you receive this error message, you're installing
   LANtastic for DOS without having the minimum of 495K of
   free conventional memory available. At the DOS prompt,
   type MEM <Enter> to view your computer's current memory
   availability.

-----------------------------------------------------------
D. "The network is not present or not started."

   If you receive this error when expanding the Entire
   Network tree in the Assign Drives, Assign Printers or
   LANtastic Connections windows - OR when expanding the
   NetWare network tree in the Browse Network window - it
   means the Client for NetWare networks is installed but
   no NetWare servers are available on the network at this
   time.

   The solution is to either remove the Client for NetWare
   networks OR install a NetWare server on your network.
   To perform either task, right-click the Network
   Neighborhood icon on your desktop, then select
   Properties.

-----------------------------------------------------------
E. "ERROR: Cannot locate network name, LOGIN has failed."
   If you receive this error message when attempting to
   connect a LANtastic DOS or Windows computer to a Windows
   95 computer through an Artisoft Central Station, the
   Windows 95 computer must be configured to allow
   unpublished routes. Do this by clicking Start, Settings,
   Control Panel, then double-clicking Network and selecting
   Artisoft NetBIOS. Click Properties and from the Advanced
   tab, select Unpublished Routes Allowed and click Yes.
   Click OK and close the Network Control Panel, then
   restart your computer.

====================================================
5. USING THE NRSETUP PROGRAM FOR NODERUNNER ADAPTERS
====================================================

Correction: The LANtastic Installation and Setup Manual
states that you can get the NRSETUP program from LANtastic
installation Disk 1. In fact, it's located on Disk 6. If
you have a NodeRunner network adapter in your computer and
need to run the NRSETUP program, follow these steps:

 - Put Disk 6 into a floppy drive, and at the DOS prompt,
   make that your current drive.

 - Type INSTALL /EXTRACT.

 - Specify the directory where you want the NRSETUP program
   to reside (you can put it on any type of drive).

You can also get the NRSETUP program off the Arti-Facts BBS.
The filename is NRU100.EXE.

=================================================
6. WINDOWS 3.X INSTALLATION NOTES
=================================================

-----------------------------------------------------------
A. At the end of the LANtastic for Windows 3.x installation
    from floppy diskettes, you have three choices:

 - View README
 - Restart Computer
 - Continue

If you're installing from floppy disks (not the CD) and you
choose either Continue or Restart Computer, be sure to put
Disk 1 back into the floppy drive before you exit Windows.
After exiting Windows, remove Disk 1 from the floppy drive
and reboot to begin using your LANtastic network.

-----------------------------------------------------------
B. ERROR: "Sharing violation on Drive C:," where C: is the
   drive on which you're installing LANtastic 7.0. If you
   receive this error message while Setup is copying files,
   and you have previously installed LANtastic 7.0, you
   must remove the REMIND.EXE command from the LOAD= line
   in your C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI file. Then reboot your
   computer and run Setup again.

===========================================
7. TROUBLESHOOTING LANTASTIC FOR WINDOWS 95
   IMMEDIATELY AFTER INSTALLATION
===========================================

If you want to use the Microsoft Client to connect to
Microsoft servers or use the IPX/SPX-compatible protocol to
connect to NetWare servers at the same time that you're
running LANtastic for Windows 95, you'll need to turn off
multicast addressing on each LANtastic computer on your
network.

On computers running LANtastic v5.x or 6.x, you'll need to
do this by editing STARTNET.BAT. Find the AILANBIO command
line and add the /NO_MULTICAST switch to the end of it.
For example:

   AILANBIO /NO_MULTICAST

Save your changes and restart your computer.

To turn off multicast addressing in your computers running
LANtastic for Windows 95:

 - Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on your
   desktop, then click Properties. The Network dialog box
   appears.
 - Double-click Artisoft LANtastic NetBIOS on the
   Configuration page, then click the Advanced tab. A screen
   listing properties and values appears.
 - Click Multicast, then scroll through the Values drop-down
   list box and select Off.
 - Click OK to return to the Network dialog box.
 - Click OK and click Yes to restart your computer. Repeat
   these steps on each Windows 95 computer.

==============================================
8. RESTORING THE WINDOWS 95 LANTASTIC DATABASE
==============================================

If you have problems creating and/or modifying accounts and
resources under LANtastic 7.0 for Windows 95, your server's
LANtastic Database (LDB) may be damaged. The LDB contains
all of a server's settings, including accounts and
resources.

First, try to restore the LDB by using the Archive
Configuration button as described in the online Help. If you
don't have a backup of the LDB or you're unable to access
the LANtastic Custom Control Panel, follow these steps:

NOTE: This procedure will completely remove all server
settings, including defaults such as the Guest and Everyone
accounts.

 - Restart your computer in MS-DOS mode (click Start, Shut
   Down, and from the menu that appears select Restart the
   computer in MS-DOS mode).
 - At the DOS prompt, type:
        CD  \LANTASTI\WIN95\INSTALL <Enter>
        COPY  LDB*.  \LANTASTI\WIN95\LDB_DATA <Enter>
        Y <Enter> (to overwrite the old LDB files)
 - Restart your computer by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
 - If you have a valid backup of the database, you can now
   restore it by using the Archive Configuration button as
   described in the online Help.

===========================
9. USING CHAT IN WINDOWS 95
===========================

A. If you have trouble using the Chat feature in Windows 95,
   follow these steps:

   - Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on your
     desktop, then click Properties. The Network dialog box
     appears.
   - Double-click Artisoft LANtastic NetBIOS on the
     Configuration page.
   - Click the Advanced tab.
   - At the bottom of this page there's a check box that
     lets you set this protocol to be the default protocol.
     Select this check box (make sure it contains a check
     mark).
   - Click OK, then click OK again at the Network dialog box
     to exit.
   - You must reboot the computer before your changes will
     take effect.

B. If you attempt to send a NET CHAT message from a DOS
   computer that's running LANtastic 5.x or 6.x to a Windows
   95 LANtastic 7.0 computer, you may see the error message
   "Name not found on the network." If this occurs it's
   because the Windows 95 computer doesn't have a Chat
   window open.

===================================================
10. LANTASTIC INTERNET GATEWAY APPLICATION UPDATES
===================================================

If you encounter problems with compatibility between
certain Winsock applications and the LANtastic Internet
Gateway software, go to Artisoft's Home Page on the
World Wide Web at http://www.Artisoft.com to download
the latest updates to the LANtastic Internet Gateway
software.

Select "Get a file" from the main page and under the
LANtastic product group, look for LANtastic 7.0, Software
Updates. Follow the instructions to download the files you
need.

(See also item #21 in this Readme file, "Obtaining updated
LANtastic information.")

=======================================
11. USING POP-UP MESSAGES IN WINDOWS 95
=======================================

In the LANtastic Pop-up Message dialog box, if you click
Send Pop-up, you'll have three choices in the Send Message
To field. If you select Send to User, keep in mind that
the user whose name you type in the User Name field must
currently be logged in to any LANtastic server on the
network in order to receive your message.

======================================================
12. REMOVING AND REINSTALLING LANTASTIC FOR WINDOWS 95
======================================================

Correction: The Installing LANtastic for Windows 95 chapter
in the LANtastic Installation and Setup Manual states that
using the Add/Remove Programs utility to remove LANtastic
for Windows 95 will delete "all previous LANtastic settings
and programs." In fact, all of the permanent network
connections you made under LANtastic for Windows 95 will be
remembered when you reinstall LANtastic for Windows 95.

If you don't reinstall LANtastic, the remembered
connections will appear disconnected in Windows 95 Explorer
and won't work because you don't have the network anymore.

============================================================
13. REMOVING THE PRIMARY NETWORK LOG-ON PROMPT IN WINDOWS 95
============================================================

If you prefer to log in to Windows 95 without a password,
you may want to follow these steps to bypass that default
network log-on prompt. Following these steps will also avoid
problems with remote dial-in software that could occur
because dial-in software sometimes requires Windows 95 to
already be running.

The first thing you'll do in these steps is restart once as
a Client for Microsoft Networks. The last step involves
removing the Client (unless you need it for Microsoft
Network connectivity).

 - Click Start, Settings, Control Panel. Then double-click
   the Network icon.
 - If the Microsoft Client is not already installed, click
   Add. The Select Network Component Type dialog box
   appears.
 - In the list, click Client, then click Add. The Select
   Network Client dialog box appears.
 - In the Manufacturers list, click Microsoft, and in the
   Network Clients list, click Client for Microsoft
   Networks, and click OK.
 - Back at the Network dialog box, in the middle of the
   Configuration page you'll see a drop-down list box
   called Primary Network Logon. Click the arrow to the
   right of the list box to open it, then click Client for
   Microsoft Networks.
 - Click OK, then click Yes to restart your computer.
 - When it restarts, at the Enter Network Password dialog,
   log in with the user name and password that you've been
   using.
 - Click Start, Settings, Control Panel. Then double-click
   the Network icon.
 - At the Primary Network Logon drop-down list box, this
   time select Windows Logon. Click OK, then click No when
   asked if you want to restart the computer.
 - In the Control Panel, double-click the Passwords icon.
   The Passwords Properties dialog box appears.
 - Click Change Windows Password, then type in your old
   password and press Enter. Your cursor goes to the New
   Password field. Press Enter twice, which sets it for
   NO password. (The second Enter clicks OK.)
 - Click Close at Passwords Properties.
 - Restart the computer, and it should bypass the primary
   network log-on prompt.
 - If you don't need the Client for Microsoft Networks, you
   can remove it now. (Double-click the Network icon, click
   Microsoft Client, click Remove, OK and restart your
   computer.)

===================================================
14. INFORMATION ABOUT LANTASTIC-COMPATIBLE SOFTWARE
    AND HARDWARE
===================================================

Most applications written for DOS, Windows, OS/2 or Windows
95 work great with LANtastic. The LANtastic Application
Guide lists more than a thousand software products and
points you to helpful Technical Notes documents for selected
products certified as LANtastic Compatible.

Most popular network adapters and accessories also work
great with LANtastic. The LANtastic Hardware Guide lists
adapters and other hardware known to be compatible with
LANtastic.

The LANtastic Application Guide, the LANtastic Hardware
Guide and Technical Notes for selected products can be
obtained from the following Artisoft online services:

=================================
15. HOW TO USE THE ACROBAT READER
=================================

The LANtastic documentation that's included on your CD-ROM
or that you downloaded from the BBS is in Adobe Acrobat
Portable Document Format (PDF). To use these files, you must
first install the Acrobat Reader (also on your CD-ROM or
available by downloading from the BBS or other online
sites). Follow these steps in this order:

-  Insert your LANtastic 7.0 CD-ROM.

 - In the Windows v3.x Program Manager, click File, then
   Run. Under Windows 95, click Start, then Run. Type in
   (or browse to) the path to ACROREAD.EXE, then click OK.
   Acrobat Installer will prepare to install the Reader.

 - Because Artisoft has met Adobe's licensing requirements,
   just click Accept or press Enter to continue past the
   licensing screen.

 - Click Install or press Enter to accept the default
   installation path, then click OK to continue past the
   registration message.

 - Type in your name and press the Tab key, then type your
   organization name and press Enter.

 - When the installation is finished, double-click
   ACROREAD.EXE to open it.

 - To view a document, click the File menu and click Open.
   Double-click the document you want to view.

Once you've opened a document with the Acrobat Reader,
follow these steps to use it:

 - Click the View menu, then click Bookmarks and Page. A
   list of chapters, appendixes or other contents indicators
   appears on the left side of your screen. You can enlarge
   the Bookmarks window by dragging the double-triangle icon
   (next to the lower right corner of the Bookmarks window)
   to the right.
 - Click the triangle to the left of a listing in the
   Bookmarks window to see its subsections.

IMPORTANT: As you move your cursor around in the Bookmarks
window, it sometimes turns into a pointing finger. Any time
it does this, you can click once and go directly to the
section the finger is pointing at. All cross-references
(such as "refer to page 35") inside the manual are linked,
as are all table of contents and index entries.

You can print out an entire document or any part of it by
following these steps:

 - Pull down the File menu and click Print.
 - Select All, Current or click a page range, then click OK.
   When printing by page range, use the PDF page numbers
   indicated in the status bar, which may differ from those
   appearing at the top of the page.

==============================================
16. HOW TO MAKE A DISKETTE SET FROM THE CD-ROM
==============================================

If you like, you can copy some or all of the files that are
on the LANtastic 7.0 CD-ROM onto diskettes.

Installation Files
------------------
If you just want to copy the LANtastic 7.0 installation
files, you'll need seven blank, formatted diskettes. In the
LANTASTI directory you'll see these subdirectories: 1, 2,
3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Label your diskettes with these numbers,
and copy each of these subdirectories' contents to the
appropriate diskette.

For example, to make Disk 1, put the CD into a CD-ROM drive
(its volume label is LANTASTIC70), and at the DOS prompt,
type
    D: <Enter>
(where D: is the CD-ROM drive letter you're using)
    CD  \DISKIMG\LANTASTI <Enter>
    CD  1 <Enter>
    COPY  *.*  A:\ <Enter>
(where A: is the floppy drive that contains your empty
diskette)

One-Disk Network Install
------------------------
The One-Disk Network Install program files are also under
DISKIMG\LANTASTI, in the directory called 1DISK. Copy the
files under 1DISK to a floppy diskette and label the
diskette.

Other Files
-----------
In addition to the LANTASTI directory, under DISKIMG you'll
see the following subdirectories:

  NTSDOS (NTS TCP PRO for DOS)
  NTSWIN (NTS TCP PRO for Windows)
  SPRYNET (Internet service and Netscape)
  WINCIM  (CompuServe)

If you need these files on diskette, label one diskette for
each of the subdirectories you see under the directory you
want, and copy the files according to the instructions
above.

===================================
17. USING THE MODEM SHARING FEATURE
===================================

-----------------------------------------------------------
A. Managing the modem client from Windows 3.x

If you installed LANtastic 7.0 for Windows 3.x and you
didn't make your computer a modem server (it doesn't have
a modem attached), but you do plan to use other computers'
modems, you must use the LANtastic for Windows 3.x Net
program when you want to perform modem client tasks such
as assigning drive letters to modems. You cannot perform
modem client tasks from the DOS NET program.

-----------------------------------------------------------
B. Using INSYNC ModemShare with LANtastic 7.0

If some of the computers on your network are running the
INSYNC ModemShare software or the Cheyenne BitShare
software, and some of them are sharing modems through
LANtastic 7.0, when you use the INSYNC ModemShare Monitor
program you won't be able to view accurate information
about the LANtastic 7.0-only computers' shared modems.

------------------------------------------------------------
C. Automatic modem redirection

If, during installation, you selected the option to share
your modem (making your computer a modem server),
LANtastic 7.0 will perform an automatic redirection for
that modem to your server. If your computer isn't a modem
server, no automatic redirections are made.

-----------------------------------------------------------
D. Checking your modem settings

When you install LANtastic 7.0 on a computer that will share
its modem (the modem server), LANtastic automatically sets
a standard IRQ (Interrupt Request) and I/O (Input/Output)
Base address for the COM port the modem is attached to. For
example, if the modem is on COM 2, LANtastic will set the
IRQ to 3 and the I/O Base address to 2F8. For most modems
these default settings will work fine.

However, if the modem requires special IRQ or I/O Base
settings, you need to change these default settings by
following the steps below on the modem server:

Under Windows 95:
 - On the Manage Servers page in the LANtastic Custom
   Control Panel, click the Share Modem button. The
   Manage Shared Modem window appears.
 - In the Communication Port field, you can either choose
   Use standard port settings and select a COM port number,
   or click Specify port settings and type in the correct
   I/O Base Address and IRQ.

Under Windows 3.x:
 - From Network Manager, click Modems. The Manage Shared
   Modem window appears.
 - In the Communication Port field, you can either choose
   Use standard port settings and select a COM port number,
   or click Specify port settings and type in the correct
   I/O Base Address and IRQ.

Under DOS:
 - From NET_MGR, select Shared Modem Port Management, then
   COM port of shared modem. Choose either a COM port number
   (standard) or Custom Settings. If you choose Custom, type
   in the correct COM Port Base Address then choose the
   correct IRQ.

-----------------------------------------------------------
E. Error message, server busy or unavailable

If you're running Windows 95 and using the NetBIOS or
NetBEUI network protocol, you might see the error message,
"Server is busy or unavailable." To correct this problem,
you need to set a default network protocol so that modem
sharing will transmit data packets using this protocol
under Windows 95.

Go to each modem server and client that's running Windows
95 and follow these steps:

 - Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on your
   desktop, then click Properties. The Network dialog box
   appears.
 - Double-click Artisoft LANtastic NetBIOS on the
   Configuration page.
 - Click the Advanced tab.
 - At the bottom of this page there's a check box that
   lets you set this protocol to be the default protocol.
   Select this check box (make sure it contains a check
   mark).
 - Click OK, then click OK again at the Network dialog box
   to exit.
 - You must reboot each computer before your changes will
   take effect.

------------------------------------------------------------
F. Understanding the Windows 95 Device Manager and LANtastic
    modem sharing

If you use Windows 95's Device Manager on a Plug and Play
computer after installing LANtastic 7.0, you might notice
circled exclamation points next to Direct memory access
controller and System timer under System devices. Windows 95
will give you a message that there are resource conflicts
with these two devices.

In fact, there are no resource conflicts. Windows 95 manages
LANtastic's virtual COM ports as though they were actual,
physical devices. Ignore the exclamation points and conflict
messages.

G. More information about modem sharing

The LANtastic Troubleshooting Manual contains modem
troubleshooting information. Modem-related error messages
are included in two files (ERRS_95.PDF and ERRS_DW.PDF) that
are included on your LANtastic 7.0 CD-ROM, as explained in
the LANtastic Installation and Setup Manual.

18. USING LANTASTIC 7.0 MODEM SHARING AND THE
    INTERNET GATEWAY ON A WINDOWS 95 COMPUTER
==================================================

Do not set up one LANtastic 7.0 Windows 95 computer as both
a LANtastic Internet Gateway server and a modem server,
because there will be conflicts. But even though the server
isn't set up as a modem server, the Gateway can still
fully function. As described in the LANtastic Internet/
Intranet Manual, the Gateway allows multiple users to
simultaneously access the Internet using the modem that's
physically installed in the server.

19. INSTALLING NTS TCP PRO FOR TCP/IP SUPPORT
=============================================

-------------------------------------------------
A. Installing TCP Pro Immediately after LANtastic

If you want to install the NTS TCP Pro, do so immediately
after installing LANtastic 7.0. This ensures that you'll
maintain the standard command lines in your STARTNET.BAT
file. If you run a memory optimizer such as MEMMAKER, or
modify the command lines in your STARTNET.BAT file after
installing LANtastic 7.0, NTS TCP Pro might not
successfully install.

----------------------------------------------------------
B. Correction: Installing TCP Pro for Windows

The LANtastic Internet/Intranet Manual states that you
need to provide modem configuration information during the
Windows installation if you want to use TCP Pro for remote
access. In fact, the remote access option is not available
through the installation process in this version of TCP Pro.
If you want to use a modem on a Windows 3.x computer for
remote access, consider installing the SPRYNET software
that is included with LANtastic 7.0. SPRYNET offers dial-up
access to the Internet.

The LANtastic Internet/Intranet Manual also refers to the
ALWAYS option for configuring a BootP server during
installation. Although the ALWAYS check box does not
appear during installation, you can manually configure
TCP Pro to wait indefinitely for a BootP server. To do
this, use a text editor to open the PROTOCOL.INI file (for
NDIS drivers) or the NET.CFG file (for ODI drivers)
located in the LANTASTI directory. Find the BootpFlag
statement and change ATTEMPT to ALWAYS. The edited
statement should be BootpFlag=ALWAYS. Save your changes
and exit the text editor.

20. SOLVING LANTASTIC INTERNET GATEWAY PROBLEMS
=================================================

-----------------------------------------------------------
A. Adding LANtastic Internet Gateway Support

If you didn't select LANtastic Internet Gateway support
during LANtastic 7.0 installation, and you want to add it,
you must reinstall LANtastic 7.0. You cannot install it
separately from LANtastic.

-------------------------------------------------------
B. Diagnosing LANtastic Internet Gateway Client Lockup
   Problems

When you're using the LANtastic Internet Gateway from a
client computer, and the Gateway appears to hang or lock
up, there may be a problem with the application you ran.
It could also be that the server on which that application
resides may not be running.

To rule out a problem with the LANtastic Internet Gateway,
try running the application to see if it works properly
without using the LANtastic Internet Gateway software.
This can be done by running the application on the
computer that acts as the LANtastic Internet Gateway Server.

----------------------------------------------------------
C. Restoring the LANtastic Internet Gateway Client

If you install the LANtastic Internet Gateway Client on a
Windows 95 computer, and later install Microsoft IPX/SPX
protocol or Microsoft TCP/IP protocol, the LANtastic
Internet Gateway Client will be disabled due to replacement
of the Winsock DLL files. To restore the LANtastic Internet
Gateway Client, you'll need to remove and reinstall
LANtastic 7.0. To do this without disturbing your accounts
and resources, run the LANtastic 7.0 Setup program and
click Remove. Then run Setup again, selecting the LANtastic
Internet Gateway Client.

-----------------------------------------------------------
D. Preventing LANtastic Internet Gateway Server Startup
Delays

You may experience a delay of one minute or more after
starting the LANtastic Internet Gateway server. To prevent
this, go to the the Microsoft Network TCP/IP Property Sheet
and make sure that the DNS option is disabled. If your
Internet Service Provider requires you to specify a DNS
address, right-click the appropriate Dial-up Networking
Connection icon, click the Server Type button, then click
the TCP/IP button and specify the Name Server addresses
required by your ISP.

21. SETTING UP A SHARED HP JETDIRECT PRINTER
============================================

Computers running LANtastic for Windows 95 can't use
LANtastic to share an HP JetDirect printer. The printer
won't appear as a resource on the Available Printers list
in the Share drives and Printers window. However, each
Windows 95 client computer can still use the printer
by installing HP Services in the Windows 95 Network
Control Panel. Refer to your HP documentation for detailed
instructions.

LANtastic 7.0 supports HP JetDirect printer sharing under
Windows 3.x and DOS. See your LANtastic Installation and
Setup Manual for instructions on adding the printer to
your network.
