                          Beyond Dark Forces

Patch Version 2.1 for LucasArts' Dark Forces

                  by Ed Mundy (Rerun1138@aol.com)
			      (DGVT13A@prodigy.com)

		     Released: 17 February 1996

This is a patch used to combine thirteen of the very best Dark Forces Add-on
levels into a single GOB file with a unifying storyline, new cutscenes and
full-color, graphic-rich mission briefings!

Disclaimer: I cannot be responsible for any damage caused to your software /
hardware by the use of any of the prorams in this ZIP file. I have gone to
great lengths to make sure this is the cleanest, 'healthiest' :) DF Patch
you ever have the pleaseure of downloading. However there are no guarantees,
either expressed or implied.

New in Version 2.1: Changed some of the EXE programs and added support for
DEFBASE and DON-DF42. Please be aware that the previous versions (BEYOND.ZIP
and BEYOND20.ZIP) were virus-infected. They included an infected program
called MAKE_GOB.EXE virus which affects Windows 95 users by messing up the
Boot Record so that when you boot from an un-affected floppy, the Hard Drive
seems to disappear. It is more of a nuisance than anything dangerous, but to
be on the safe side, you may want to delete MAKE_GOB.EXE if you downloaded
either of the previous versions. The Virus is relatively new, and although I
scanned the files with McAfee VirusScan95, it was not detected. Special
thanks to PaladinTP@aol.com for locating this virus and notifying me of it.

Version 2.1 also utilizes a program by Yves Borckmans called GOBMAKE.EXE,
which was included as part of DFUSE. DFUSE is an excellent editor, check it
out!

Version 2.0: I apologize to everyone who took the time to download version 1,
just to discover a new (rather large) version so quickly. I think, however,
if you liked the first version, you'll love this one. There are now thirteen
missions, as opposed to ten in the last version. You'll also notice a couple
new cutscenes (be sure to watch them!): There is a new scrolling text intro
as well as a modified final awards ceremony where Kyle is awarded the Kalidor
Crescent! He's already received the Star of Alderraan about 16 times, so I
figured it was time for a change. I've also corrected a few minor bugs. And
here's something I'm rather proud of: check out the briefing for the Death
Star mission. It's the first all-new mission briefing background (to my
knowledge) ever!

Included in this file (Beyond21.zip): Beyond21.txt (this file)
				      Newstuff.gob
				      New2.gob
				      Step21.bat
				      Beyond.lfd
				      Gobmake.exe
				      Ungob.exe

How it works: Step21.bat is a complicated batch file that ungobs, regobs, and
renames all the files of some of the best DF Add-on levels
into a single GOB file using the included Gobbing utilities.
Of course, this ZIP file would be far too large for download
if it included all the necessary files, so here's a list of
the required files you will have to download separately:

REQUIRED FILES: DON-DF42.ZIP (Deathstar, Secbase II, Tatooine, and
			     Impossible Rescue)
		TERMINAT.ZIP (Terminate Boba Fett)
		OPJUST1A.ZIP (Op Just Cause)
		ESCAPE.ZIP (Escape from Hoth)
		POWERSTA.ZIP (Power Station Zeta)
		BESPIN12.ZIP (Return to Bespin)
		NITEHAWK.ZIP (Operation NiteHawk)
		STARDES1.ZIP (Star Destroyer)
DEFBASE.ZIP (TIE Defender Base Collector's Edition)

All these files are available at the Dark Forces Homepage:
					http://www.3dg.com/DarkForces
and most are available at the Star Wars FTP Archive:
					ftp.wpi.edu

If you don't have Web or FTP access, e-mail me and I'll try to direct you to
another place to get the files.

The following Cutscene Files by Carl Kenner are also supported by this
patch. Though they are not required, I highly recommend you download them,
as they infinitely enhance your Beyond Dark Forces experience (whoa... deep).
They are available at the Star Wars FTP Archive (see above).

OPTIONAL FILES: HOTH.ZIP (Escape from Hoth cutscene)
		DEFENDER.ZIP (TIE Defender Base cutscene)

Instructions:

I'll try to make this as simple as possible:

1) Create a new, empty directory on your Hard Drive called simply 'BEYOND'.
This step is very important. Running STEP21.BAT in any other directory
rather than 'BEYOND' will cause problems.

2) Place the following files in the new directory: NEWSTUFF.GOB
						   NEW2.GOB
						   STEP21.BAT
						   GOBMAKE.EXE
						   UNGOB.EXE
						   DON-DF42.GOB
						   TERMINAT.GOB
						   OPJUST.GOB
						   ESCAPE.GOB
						   POWERSTA.GOB
						   BESPIN.GOB
						   NITEHAWK.GOB
						   STARDEST.GOB
						   DEFBASE.GOB

Double check to make sure all the files are there. Even the absence of one
of these files will cause the patch to perform improperly.

3) Run Step21.bat by typing STEP21

4) Move the newly created files Beyond.gob and Beyond.bat to your DARK\
directory. Move BEYOND.LFD to your DARK\LFD\ directory. If you have
downloaded the optional cutscene files, then move DEFENDER.LFD and
HOTH.LFD to your DARK\LFD\ directory, as well. Also copy the file
GEARUP.LFD from D:\LECDEMOS\DFDEMO\LFD\ to C:\DARK\LFD\ if you have not
   already done so.

5) Check your DARK\ and DARK\LFD to make sure that they do not include any
of the following files. If any of them are there, they may cause Beyond to
do funky stuff, so remove them if they're there: TEXT.MSG
						    CUTSCENE.LST
						    BRIEFING.LST
						    JEDI.LVL
						    *.o
						    *.lev
						    *.cmp
						    *.pal
						    *.inf
						    *.gol

6) That's all there is to it. Just type BEYOND at the DOS prompt to begin.

If you have any problems, feel free to e-mail me. I think the main thing to
keep in mind is that although the final GOB file only takes about 12
megabytes of Disk Space, STEP21.BAT requires more than twice that much while
it is running. Be sure that you have enough space before you begin.

Memory concerns: TIE Defender Base CE requires 12 Megs of RAM in DOS and 8
Megs of RAM running under Windows 95. Also please note that detailed
directions are given in README.TXT (included in DEFBASE.ZIP) on how to run
the level under Windows 95. I assume that if you follow the same directions
(substituting Beyond.bat for Defbase.bat) you will get the same effect.

I've located the following bugs:

KNOWN BUGS: 1) If you start Mission 2 on any difficult setting other than
easy, you will automatically complete the level, so just
start on easy to avoid this problem.
	    2) The briefings will only work at the begining of the level. If
you try to view the briefing from your PDA (F1 key) you will
see the origional Dark Forces Briefing.
	    3) When the final credits run after you complete Mission 13, the
game goes back to the Mission 13 briefing, even though it is
the final mission. Simply click 'cancel' to return to the
	       Agents Menu.

Since this is the initial release of the patch, there are bound to be other
bugs that turn up. If you find any, please notify me.

Thanks go out to the following people:

CREDITS: Don Sielke: Missions 1, 4, 10, 13.
The C-3PO graphic in the Mission 10 briefing.
	 Sean Baker: Mission 2
	 Richard Gold: Missions 3, 6, and 9.
	 Matthew Neuman: Mission 5

	 Yves Borckmans: DFUSE and WDFUSE
Alexei Novikov: The BMP <-> DF editing package (An excellent

In fact, all the credit should go to the level/editor/component designers. I
really don't know how you guys do it!
Also, thanks to everyone in the AOLDFFC and everyone else who's helped me out
with feedback, tips, suggestions, and (yes!) even praise.

Very Special Thanks to PaladinTP for locating the virus in the first version
and notifying me of it. Also, thanks for all his help virus-checking this
version.

Other credit is given in the original Readme files for each of the levels.
