What will this utility do?
--------------------------

This utility will upgrade your current installation of Carbon

this upgrade utility modifies your system, backup copies of all
the modified files are stored in a BACKUP directory.

What this utility will not do!
------------------------------

This update utility will not overwrite any of your current Carbon
Copy 3.0 configurations. The following items will NOT be affected
by this update utility.

* Names and Numbers added to your phone book
* Login Names and passwords added to your password table
* Configuration settings for Remote Control, Remote Printing,
Remote Drive Access, File Transfer, Security etc.
* Custom modem descriptors that you may have added

What do I need to run this upgrade utility?
------------------------------------------

It is assumed that you have already installed a licensed copy
of Carbon Copy 3.0 for Windows. This upgrade utility will only
work on version 3.0. It will not upgrade Carbon Copy 2.5x to
Carbon Copy 3.0a. You will need approximately 3.5 Mbytes of free
disk space on your hard drive so that this upgrade utility can
store backup copies of all the modified files. You must also
exit out of all Carbon Copy applications before you run the update
utilities.

If you received the update utility on a disk, copy all the files
from the update disk to a directory on your hard drive. If you
downloaded the update utility from Micrcom's BBS, run the self-
extracting executable 30TO30A.EXE. As 30TO30A.EXE runs it will
expand into several files that comprise the upgrade utility.

Quick Start Instructions!
-------------------------

To run the update utility, copy all the files on the update
disk to a clean directory. From the DOS prompt run CCWUPDOS.BAT.
The update utility will ask you to verify the location of your
Carbon Copy 3.0 install directory and the location of the directory
where Windows is installed. Follow the prompts.

Running this utility
--------------------

1. Change to the directory where the update utility files are located.
For example, if the update utility files are in the C:\UPDATE
directory, enter "CD C:\UPDATE" at the DOS prompt.

2. At the DOS prompt enter the following command "CCWUPDOS.BAT".

3. An introductory screen will appear informing you that this utility
will update your current installation of Carbon Copy 3.0 to
Carbon Copy 3.0a. Press any key to continue.

4. This update utility will then search your hard drive for your
Carbon Copy 3.0 files. When found, it will ask you to verify
that it has properly located the Carbon Copy 3.0 install
directory. If it has successfully found your Carbon Copy 3.0
install directory, press "Y" to continue. If this utility has
not correctly identified your Carbon Copy 3.0 install directory,
enter "N", and this utility will continue to search your hard
drive for your Carbon Copy 3.0 files. If this utility cannot
find your Carbon Copy 3.0 installation directory, it will ask
you to specify the directory. Enter the drive and path where
your Carbon Copy 3.0 files can be found. You may abort at any
time by pressing and holding the <Ctrl> key followed by the "C"
    key.

4. This update utility will then search your hard drive for your
Windows directory. When found, it will ask you to verify
that it has properly located your Windows directory. If it
has successfully found your Windows install directory, press
"Y" to continue. If this utility has not correctly identified
your Windows directory, enter "N", and this utility will continue
to search your hard drive for your Windows directory. If this
utility cannot find your Windows directory, it will ask
you to specify the directory. Enter the drive and path where
Windows has been installed followed by a carriage return. You
may abort at any time by pressing and holding the <Ctrl> key
    followed by the "C" key.

5. This update utility will then begin to update your system. As
your system is updated, progress messages will be displayed on
your screen. You will be notified when the update process is
    complete.

Updating a shared installation of Carbon Copy 3.0
-------------------------------------------------

If you have a network based shared installation of Carbon Copy 3.0,
you must update the files that are in the Carbon Copy install
directory on your network, and you must also update the Carbon Copy
files that are on your local PC. Follow the procecures below to
update your Carbon Copy 3.0 files:

1. Update the Carbon Copy 3.0 files on your network drive

Run "CCWUPDOS.BAT" as described in the "Running this utility"
section of this README.TXT file. The update utility will ask
you to specify the location of your Carbon Copy 3.0 installation
directory. Enter the complete drive and path of your network-
based installation of Carbon Copy 3.0. The update utility will
also ask you to confirm the location of your Windows directory.
Since this is a shared installation of Carbon Copy, you only
have to modify these files once.

2. Update the Carbon Copy 3.0 files on you local PC

Run "CCWSHARE.BAT". To do this enter "CCWSHARE.BAT" at the DOS
prompt followed by a carriage return. This utility will ask you
to verify the location of your local Carbon Copy 3.0 install
directory. This directory contains only the files that are
    specific to your PC.

This utility will also ask you to verify the location of your
Windows directory. Once the Carbon Copy 3.0 and Windows directories
have been specified, this utility will upgrade your shared
installation of Carbon Copy 3.0 to 3.0a.

Restoring Carbon Copy 3.0 files
-------------------------------

You may restore your system back to the original Carbon Copy 3.0
files. During the update process, copies of all the modified
files were placed in the C:\CCWUPBAK directory. To restore
your system from Carbon Copy 3.0a to Carbon Copy 3.0 you must
perform the following steps:

1. From the DOS prompt, switch to the CCWUPBAK directory.
To this enter "CD C:\CCWUPBAK" followed by a carriage
    return.

2. Rename UNPATCH.BAK to UNPATCH.BAT. To do this enter
    "RENAME UNPATCH.BAK UNPATCH.BAT" followed by a carriage
    return.

3. Run UNPATCH.BAT from the DOS prompt. To do this enter
"UNPATCH" followed by a carriage return.

4. Your files will be restored!

What happens if the update utility gets interrupted?
----------------------------------------------------

If the update utility gets interrupted for any reason, for
example a power outage, you can simply re-run the update
utility. However, since some of your Carbon Copy files have
already been updated, the upgrade utility will give you the
following warning message:

"Old file not found. However, a file of the same name
was found. No update done since file contents do not
  match."

This is OK. The update utility is simply telling you that
the original file, the one that it is trying to update, has
already been modified. Click on "OK" and let the update
utility continue.
