April 1996

This CD-ROM contains installation directories customized for your operating
system. Microsoft Windows users have installation programs for both Windows
and Windows NT/Windows 95 on the same CD-ROM. If you are running Windows,
be sure to use the correct installation. OS/2 users have a set of installation
options for OS/2.

From this CD-ROM, you can install this product two different ways:

1. Install from a single compressed file on the CD-ROM, which will
decompress to create a complete default directory structure or a
customized installation that will install the selected options.
2. Install from compressed disk images- we have provided a set of
compressed disk images that you can copy onto 3-1/2 inch floppy
disks, if this suits your needs.

To run Visual Smalltalk or Visual Smalltalk Enterprise 3.1 under
Windows 3.x, you must run Windows in 386 enhanced mode.
Visual Smalltalk or Visual Smalltalk Enterprise will not run
in real, 286 or 386 normal mode. There are no such modes in Win95 or Win NT.

- For Windows 3.x, you need Win32s Release 1.3 (included on this CD).
For Windows NT, you need Release 3.51 or later (not included). For
Windows 95 you will need the Golden CD version.

    for it:

STARTING AND EXITING VISUAL SMALLTALK ENTERPRISE

To start Visual Smalltalk Enterprise from the Program Manager, double-click on the
newly created icon. After it starts up, a Smalltalk Transcript window displays. To
use the PARTS Workbench subsystem, choose the Smalltalk/New Workbench menu item.

To exit, do the following:

1. Choose the System Control Menu located in the top left corner of the Transcript
window title bar (or press Alt + Spacebar).

2. Choose Close from the system menu. A message box appears asking whether to
save the image or not. Choose Yes if you want to save the current state of your
image. Choose No if you don't want to save the work done since the last save. After
either response, Visual Smalltalk exits.

When you save the image, a dialog box pops up to ask for your confirmation. If you
look carefully, you will notice a check box labeled 'Make Backup' in this dialog box.
If this check box is checked, then after you save the image, the previous image file is
renamed with an extension .BAK. The 'old' image file is not deleted or overwritten.
If the check box is not checked, the old image file is overwritten. We recommend
that you always keep backups of your image.

UNINSTALLING

Visual Smalltalk provides an uninstall option under Windows 95 and Windows NT.
To uninstall either,

1. Double-click the uninstall icon in your program group. A confirmation dialog pops up,
select OK to continue uninstalling. Cancel to stop uninstall. If you choose OK, your
Visual Smalltalk application will automatically be uninstalled from your hard disk.

OR

2. Go to the Windows NT/95 Control Panel and open the Add/Remove Programs. Select the
Visual Smalltalk or Visual Smalltalk Enterprise entry then select the Uninstall button.
A confirmation dialog pops up, select OK to continue uninstalling. Cancel to stop
uninstall. If you choose OK, your Visual Smalltalk application will automatically be
uninstalled from your hard disk.

NOTE: The file DELSL?.ISN is created during installation. This file must be present
on your install root directory for uninstall to work properly. Uninstall operates
only on original Visual Smallatlk files and directories. Any files or sub-directories
you may create will not be removed during this uninstall operation.

HOW TO REMOVE WIN32S

(The following instructions are from Micosoft Knowledge Base.)

 1. Remove the following line from the [386Enh] section in the
    SYSTEM.INI file:

       device=<WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\win32s\w32s.386

where <WINDOWS> and <SYSTEM> are where the Windows and System
    directories are, respectively.

 2. Modify the following line from the [BOOT] section in the
    SYSTEM.INI file:

       drivers=mmsystem.dll winmm16.dll

    to the following (remove winmm16.dll):

       drivers=mmsystem.dll

 3. Delete the following files from the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM> subdirectory or
from the SYSTEM directory in network installations:

       WINMM16.DLL
       W32SYS.DLL
       WIN32S16.DLL
       WIN32S.INI
       WINHLP32.EXE
       WINDOWS.HLP
       WINHLP32.HLP
       WINHLP32.CNT

Note: It may not be possible to delete W32SYS.DLL while Windows is
running. This occurs if you ran some Win32 application. It is
recommended that you remove Win32s while in MS-DOS, not from an MS-DOS
    box.

 4. Delete all the files in the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\WIN32S subdirectory
or the <SYSTEM>\WIN32S subdirectory in network installations.
    Then delete subdirectory itself.

 5. Restart Windows.

NOTE: <WINDOWS> refers to the windows installation directory. On a
networked Windows installation, the system directory may be located on a
remote share. If you are only removing Win32s from your machine, then you
do not need to remove the shared files (in <SYSTEM> and <SYSTEM>\WIN32S).
Before removing these files from the network share, make sure that all
users that use Win32s have removed the references to Win32s from the
 SYSTEM.INI file.

This information can be found in the Win32s Programmer's Reference
 help file.
