 Welcome to AddressMate for Windows!

You may be asking yourself why there is a README.TXT file.
The reason is simple. While we attempt to document everything
possible in the manual, there are always things that are
discovered during and after the printing of the manuals. Any
last minute changes that are not in the manual will be
 documented in this file.

Please take some time to familiarize yourself with the contents
 of this README.TXT file.

 -----------------------------------------------
 1. NT Print Drivers for CoStar LabelWriter Printers
 -----------------------------------------------
If you purchased AddressMate with a CoStar LabelWriter
printer, you will find Windows NT printer drivers for the
CoStar LabelWriter XL/XL+ and LabelWriter II/II+ on disk #2.

To Install the Windows NT LabelWriter XL or LabelWriter II
 printer driver, do the following:

    1. In the Program Manager, open the Main Group.
    2. Double-click the Print Manager.
    3. Select 'Create Printer...' from the Printer menu.
    4. In the Printer Name window, create a name for the
       printer you are installing.
    5. Next to the Driver window, click the down arrow.
       Select 'Other'.
    6. This is the Install Driver window. Type the drive or
directory where the CoStar driver is located. This
will most likely be A: or B:. Click OK when finished.
    7. This is the Select Driver window. Select the correct
print driver. Click OK when finished.
    8. "Enter path of Windows NT distribution disk"
You will need to locate your original Windows NT
installation CD-ROM or floppy disks. Type the correct
drive and add the i386 path. For example, if you
installed from a CD-ROM, the drive and path will
probably be D:\i386\. Click OK when finished.

NOTE: IF WINDOWS NT DOES NOT COMPLETE THIS STEP AND
RETURNS THE MESSAGE "PLEASE INSERT THE WINDOWS
NT DISTRIBUTION DISK IN DRIVE x:", THEN YOU WILL
             NEED TO DO THE FOLLOWING:
             a) Copy RASDD.DL_, RASDDUI.DL_ and RASDDUI.HL_
from the i386 directory of the NT distribution
disks or CD to the root directory of C (C:\).
             b) From the DOS command line (C:\), decompress
the RAS files by typing the following commands:

                   EXPAND RASDD.DL_ RASDD.DLL
                   EXPAND RASDDUI.DL_ RASDDUI.DLL
                   EXPAND RASDDUI.HL_ RASDDUI.HLP

             c) Go back to step 1 and repeat the installation.
When you get to step 8 and are prompted to
"Enter the path of the Windows NT distribution
disk", specify the root directory of C (C:\).

    9. In the Description window, type a description of the
       printer if you wish.
   10. In the "Print to:" window, select the port where the
LabelWriter is physically attached. This should be a
       COM port.
   11. If you wish to allow others on your network to use the
printer, check 'Share Printer on Network'. Type the name
of the printer which will appear on the other computers.
Type the location of the printer for extra information.
   12. Click the Settings button. If the port you selected was
a COM port, click on Settings. Verify the following
       settings:

           * 19,200 baud for the LW XL/XL+
9,600 baud for the LW II/II+
           * 8 Data Bits
           * No Parity
           * 1 Stop Bit
           * Xon/Xoff Flow Control

Note: You may use Hardware flow control if
you are using an LW XL/XL+ with the 'F' ROM
chip and the 6-wire interface cable. The ROM
version is denoted by the last letter in the
                  LabelWriter serial number.

    13. Click the Advanced button. Unless you are well-versed
with the changes Windows NT will make to your system,
we DO NOT RECOMMEND changing the COM window, the BASE
window, or the IRQ window. We DO recommend that you
have FIFO disabled (unchecked). Click OK when finished.
    14. Click OK to close the Port Settings window.
    15. Click Close to close the Settings window.
    16. Click OK to close the Create Printer window.
    17. Click OK to close the printer's Form Name window.

After you have added the print driver, you can verify or modify
settings by highlighting the printer in the Print Manager (in
the Main Group), and selecting 'Properties' from the Printer
 menu.

 ---------------------------------------
 2. Selecting Label Sizes in Windows NT
 ---------------------------------------

Due to the Microsoft Windows NT architecture, AddressMate is
unable to automatically switch the print driver's paper size.
The paper size in the printer driver and the paper size in
AddressMate must be the same. This process is handled
automatically for users running Microsoft Windows version 3.1x
and Windows 95, however, Windows NT does not support user-
 defined sizes.

When you change to a different label stock you will need to
to open the Print Manager and select the LabelWriter. Next
choose FILE - PROPERTIES and click on the Details button.
On the Details screen click on Job Defaults. Select the
appropriate paper size from the list. Click OK and close all
 the Print Manager windows.

Now go back to AddressMate and select FILE - PRINTER SETUP
from the menu. Change the paper size to match the paper size
which you have chosen in AddressMate. Everything should work
 fine now.

 3. AmiPro Users
 ----------------

The database engine that comes with AmiPro may cause conflicts
with AddressMate for Windows. If PXENGWIN.DLL is present in
your AMIPRO subdirectory, then you must remove it for
 AddressMate to function properly.

Use the File Manager to locate the file PXENGWIN.DLL in your
AMIPRO subdirectory. Delete the file if it is present.

PXENGWIN.DLL is a database engine used by many applications,
including AmiPro and AddressMate. AddressMate ships with an
updated version of PXENGWIN.DLL and installs it in the
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory where it will be available to all
 programs.

Also note that the AddressMate macros for Ami Pro does not
 work with Lotus WordPro.

 ---------------------------------
 4. WordPerfect for Windows Users
 ---------------------------------

The WordPerfect macros that are shipped with AddressMate for
Windows require WordPerfect version 6.0a or later. If you
are using version 5.1, 5.2, or 6.0, you must upgrade in order
for the macros to work. The upgrade from 6.0 to 6.0a is
available at no charge from WordPerfect. Upgrading from 5.1
or 5.2 is not free. To order any upgrade, call
 1-800-451-5151.

 ---------------------------
 5. AddressMate (DOS) Users
 ---------------------------

If you are upgrading from the DOS version of AddressMate,
and wish to use your existing database from the DOS version,
we have supplied a program called AMEXPORT that will help
you move your database(s) from the DOS version of
 AddressMate into the Windows version.

Because of the advanced features now available in AddressMate
for Windows (AfW), your existing database can't be used as-is.
Instead, you need to use the AMEXPORT program located in the
AddressMate for Windows directory (usually C:\AMATE) to
convert your database into an ASCII list that can then be
 imported by AfW.

 To do this:

 1) When you are ready to transfer your database, exit
Windows, and change to your AddressMate subdirectory.
If you accepted the suggestions made while installing the
DOS and Windows products, you'll find that both programs
are in the subdirectory "C:\AMATE". To change to this
 subdirectory, type:

           CD C:\AMATE

 2) Next, type:

           AMEXPORT AMATE.DBF

This will convert the AddressMate database used by the DOS
version into a text file called AMATE.TXT. If you have more
than one database file used with the DOS version of AMATE,
you can convert all of them at once by typing:

           AMEXPORT *.DBF

 3) Start Windows, and run AfW by double-clicking on its icon.

 4) From the File menu, choose "Open/New Database...", and
select the database you wish to add the addresses to. If you
want to create a new database, type in its name, and click OK.

 5) From the File menu, select "Import Database...", and in
the resulting database, set "List files of Type" to be "ASCII
Text (*.TXT)". Finally, choose the file to be imported
 (AMATE.TXT), and click OK.

 6) At the Import/Merge dialog, under Choose Format, select
 "ASCII List", and click OK.

All records will be imported. To check that they were
imported correctly, you may go the AfW Address Book and
 scroll through the entries.

 Good Luck!

 -------------------------
 6. Damaged Address Books
 -------------------------

The program TUTILITY.EXE repairs damaged Address Books.
Should you encounter any difficulty in accessing any Address
Books or any records within an Address Book, simply run
TUTILITY by clicking on the Address Book Repair icon in
program manager. This will launch TUTILITY and restore the
Address Book to full working order. TUTILITY is described in
Appendix G of the User Manual and on the CoStar FaxBack
 system (1-800-350-6280, document #3056).

 --------------------------------------------
 7. Troubleshooting the Most Common Problems
 --------------------------------------------

 Problem: Graphics Print Blank

Solution: If AddressMate is printing blank graphics, select
SETTINGS - PRINTER SETTINGS from the AddressMate
menu and turn off Fast Graphic Printing.

Problem: Cannot Switch from Designer to Database

Solution: If you can only see the designer screen, it is
likely that the currently selected database is
corruped or missing. The easiest way to correct
this problem is to open another database, such as
             SAMPLE.

Problem: Error Message "Cannot Find Printer Driver"

Solution: The printer driver for the currently selected
printer is not installed correctly. From the
printer control panel, remove the driver. Next
restart Windows and re-install the printer driver.
Next launch AddressMate and select the desired
printer in FILE - PRINTER SETUP. If the problem
persists, create a new template and try again.
