@How To Use The Image Builder

USING IMAGE BUILDER'S ONLINE HELP

Use online help for information on the following topics:

Modifying a Wellfleet router software image using
		Image Builder features

		Saving a modified image

Creating a new image from scratch

Generating a list of contents showing the files
that comprise a Wellfleet router software image

Note:	For more information, refer to the book Modifying
		Wellfleet Router Software Images.

OVERVIEW

How you modify an image depends on a number of factors:

		Protocols running on your network

		Wellfleet router model

Link modules installed in your router

		Drivers installed in your router

Refer to Appendix A in the book Modifying Wellfleet Router Software
Images for a complete list of router software files and information
	on which files belong together.

If you are modifying an existing router software image, you should
be working from a window displaying only current components.

If you are adding additional software to an existing router
software image, you should be working from a window displaying both
available components and current components. The Current Components
window displays the software ordered from Wellfleet as a list of
files, while the Available Components window displays the router's
software image as a list of files.

Note:	Wellfleet suggests you be selective when creating a
new system software image. Remove non-essential files
from the list of current components.

QUICK REFERENCE

Refer to the following table when modifying a list of current
	components.

If you are-- You need to--

		Adding new Add components to
software to a the list of current
		router software components
		image

		Reducing the Remove components from
size of a router the list of current
		software image components

Use the Image Builder features described in the following sections
	to modify an image.

ADDING AND REMOVING SOFTWARE COMPONENTS

Add and Remove buttons enable you to modify a list of current
	components. They allow you to

Add available components to the list of current components

Remove components from the list of current components and
archive them in the list of available components

The Edit menu provides options for adding and removing an entire
list of components at a time. There is also an option that enables
you to undo an add or remove action.

Add Button

The Add button appears when an available component is selected.
When you add an available component to the list of current
components, you are not deleting it; you are only removing it
from the list of available components displayed in the Image
	Builder window.

Remove Button

The Remove button appears when a current component is selected.
A Remove button does not appear when essential files are selected.
This protects the most important files that comprise your router
software image. For example, you cannot remove the Operating
System Kernel file from the Baseline Router Software component.

ANALYZING COMPONENTS

To help you determine which files are needed in a software image
and to help you keep track of changes, several features provide
	helpful information.

Component Information Box

When you select a component from the Available Components or
Current Components window, the following detailed information
about that component appears in a Component Information box at the
bottom of the Image Builder window:

Model number and name of component

		Software release version

		Compressed size

		Uncompressed size

Partial Component Asterisk

Two asterisks designate a partial component. They serve as a
reminder that a file has been removed from a component, and as a
result both the file and the component are now "partial" in nature.

Details Buttons

Two Details buttons--one for available components and one for
current components--provide a view of all the files that make up a
	list of components.

For example, when the Details button for current components is
selected, all the components in that list open to reveal the files
that comprise those components. Most protocol components contain
only one software file. The Baseline Router Software component,
however, contains a long list of files, including the Operating
	System Kernel.

To determine which executable files you need from the Baseline
Router Software component, refer to Appendix A of Modifying
	Wellfleet Router Software Images.

You can also access details via the View menu. Using the View menu,
you select Available Component Details or Current Component
Details to view all the partial components in the Available
Components window or all the partial components in the Current
	Components window.

Note:	An "x" appears when you select an option.

SAVING A MODIFIED IMAGE

Wellfleet recommends that you archive router software images in
another directory besides the Image Builder directory established
during the installation of Site Manager. This is because the Image
Builder only archives individual components in its builder_dir
	directory.

Wellfleet also recommends that you use different image names for
different routers on your network, and that you keep a record of
which images are running on which routers.

	1. After modifying a list of current components select
	   File/Save.

This saves the image to your current directory, and
archives all components displayed in the Image Builder
	   window in the builder_dir directory.

Note:	A confirmation window does not appear after you select
File/Save, so make sure you compiled your list
		correctly before selecting this option.

	2. To archive an image, select File/Save As from the
	   Image Builder window.

	   The Save As window appears.

	3. Select a directory for archiving images and type a
filename in the selection field. Select OK.

Information about the new image replaces the information about the
image you loaded into the Image Builder. The updated information
appears in a box at the top of the Image Builder window.

Note:	As a precaution, a confirmation window appears if you
select File/Exit without saving your changes.

After saving the new image, proceed to Chapter 4 of Modifying
Wellfleet Router Software Images for information on loading the
	new image on your router.

CREATING A NEW IMAGE

Creating a new image from scratch is usually not necessary.
However, the option is provided in case it is needed.

	1. If you need to create an entirely new image, select
File/New from the Image Builder window.

	   The New Image window appears.

	2. Select the appropriate image format. Select OK.

An empty Image Builder window appears.

You are now ready to build a new image using the router software on
your workstation or router. Refer to Chapter 2 of Modifying
Wellfleet Router Software Images for information on loading router
	   software into the Image Builder.

GENERATING A LIST OF CONTENTS

To save a list of contents to an ASCII file, select "Generate
CONTENTS.TXT when Saving" from the Options menu.

Note:	An "x" appears when you select this option. By default
		this option is already selected.

An ASCII file named CONTENTS.TXT is created and saved to your
current directory. It contains all the filenames listed in the
	Current Components window.
