1. INTRODUCTION
==============================
This IntelliSync for Pilot release supports all versions of Windows.
When running under 32-bit versions of Windows (Windows 95 and NT),
IntelliSync runs as a native 32-bit program. Under Windows 3.1 or
Windows for Workgroups, it requires that Win32s be installed (included
with the Pilot Desktop software).

For further information concerning your particular application, see
the IntelliSync Help file and reference the appropriate topic under
Supported Systems.

==============================
2. PREREQUISITES
==============================
Before installing IntelliSync for Pilot, you must have installed the Pilot
Desktop application that comes with every Pilot device. If you have not
done so, please be sure to complete the Pilot Desktop installation before
proceeding with the IntelliSync installation.

Pilot Desktop installation is essential because it takes care of installing
all the base components required to run the Pilot HotSync Manager. After
installing Pilot Desktop, the HotSync Manager will be automatically placed
in your Startup program group. The HotSync Manager must be running on your
PC in order to initiate synchronization with any application.

==============================
3. INSTALLATION
==============================
To install IntelliSync for Pilot, place Disk 1 in your diskette drive,
and run a:\setup to initiate the installer program.

When prompted to enter a serial number, type the serial number found on
your registration card.

The installation program will search your system to locate the directory
containing the Pilot Desktop. If it is unable to find Pilot Desktop, the
installer will give an error message and exit.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT INTELLISYNC BE INSTALLED IN THE SAME DIRECTORY AS
THE PILOT DESKTOP. If IntelliSync is installed anywhere else, the HotSync
Manager will fail to find its components during synchronization. This will
not necessarily result in errors, since HotSync will simply not be aware
that IntelliSync is present on your system.

Once you have successfully installed IntelliSync, be sure to run the
Configure program at least once to select the applications and data
files to be used for synchronization.

==============================
4. DOCUMENTATION ERRATA.
==============================
* Page 3-9 of the User's Manual states that To Do items are impacted by
   the setting of the Date Range option. This is incorrect. The Date Range
   setting is used exclusively to synchronize the Date Book application.
   Since the only date in the To Do List is an optional Due Date, the Date
   Range setting is not used.

* A new feature has been added which is not covered in the manual. A
   Special Setting now exists to force re-synchronizing "from scratch".
   This means that any historical information maintained by IntelliSync
   will be discarded, and the data will be compared in its entirely to
   check for potential conflicts. The feature is accessible from the
   Settings button in the Configure program. A small "switch" icon has
   been added adjacent to the Field Mapping button to control these
   special settings. See Help topic "Full Re-Synchronization" for
   further information regarding this feature.

* A Re-Sync button has been added to the Confirmation dialog box.
   When enabled, this button allows you to request a full comparison
   of the actual data, regardless of any historical information that
   may have been accumulated by IntelliSync. Pressing the Re-Sync button
   is the equivalent of selecting the Re-Sync "switch" mentioned above.
   See Help topic "Full Re-Synchronization" for further information
   concerning this feature.

==============================
5. KNOWN ANOMALIES
==============================
You should be aware of the following anomalies, which may appear when using
either IntelliSync or Pilot Desktop.

* The Private records on your Pilot are always synchronized with
   your PC application, even when you have entered a Password on the
   Pilot to protect Private records (using the Security application).

* By default, Pilot Desktop will synchronize with all Pilot applications
   that are not configured to synchronize with IntelliSync or another
   3rd party conduit. If you wish to shut off synchronization for a given
   application altogether, use the HotSync.Custom command in Pilot Desktop.
   From the Custom dialog box, select the desired Pilot conduit and press
   the Change button. In the Change dialog, select "Do Nothing" at the
   bottom, and also check the box labeled "Set As Default" to cause the
   new setting to be remembered across synchronization sessions. Note that
   making this change will prevent synchronization with any conduit for
   that application, even when the IntelliSync Configure program has been
   run to configure for synchronization with the disabled Pilot application.

* When the Cancel button is pressed in the HotSync progress dialog, the
   synchronization operation in progress is allowed to finish. HotSync
   interprets the Cancel request as "perform no further synchronizations
   beyond the current one". This means that the synchronization in progress
   will not be aborted as a result of pressing Cancel. HotSync will display
   a "Cleaning up" message, but wait for the synchronization to complete.
   If the current synchronization operation involves substantial data, the
   time between pressing Cancel and HotSync responding can be significant.

* When synchronizing a recurring To Do item from a PC application with
   Pilot, the recurring item will cause individual To Do items to be created
   on the Pilot, having different due dates which correspond to the recurring
   pattern defined in your PC application.

* Before de-installing IntelliSync under either Windows 3.1 or Windows
   for Workgroups, run the Configure program and de-select all Pilot
   applications (remove the checkmark adjacent to each application name).
   Failure to do this may result in the HotSync Manager attempting to
   call the IntelliSync components, even after their removal from your
   system. Note that this is not necessary when running under either
   Windows 95 or Windows NT (the de-installer removes all traces of
   IntelliSync in these environments). Alternatively, you can edit the
   content of file PILOT.INI found in your Windows directory (this is
   only applicable to 16-bit versions of Windows). Use any text editor
   to view the content of PILOT.INI, and remove all sections that begin
   with the word "Application" in the section name. This is a brute
   force method for removing the registration information used by the
   HotSync Manager.

==============================
6. CATEGORIES
==============================
IntelliSync will automatically create new category names on your Pilot.
Items will be placed in an existing category on the Pilot provided that
(a) you have created the category on the Pilot, (b) the Category field
for the Pilot application has been mapped to a PC application field, and
(c) the name of the desired category is in the PC field which is mapped.
If IntelliSync does not find the specified category on the Pilot, the
new category will be automatically created. When updating an existing
record on your Pilot, the record will always remain under its designated
category, unless the Category field is mapped and a different category
values exists in the mapped field (resulting in a change to the category).
If no available "slot" exists on your Pilot to add a new category, the
new record will be placed in the Unfiled category, and a message will
appear in the log file to indicate that IntelliSync was unable to add
the new category on your Pilot.

==============================
7. PHONE NUMBERS
==============================
The Pilot phone number fields can have varying labels between Address Book
records. In support of this flexibility, IntelliSync allows explicit mapping
of all available phone labels. Separate field names appear in the field
mapping dialog which correspond to each available Pilot phone label:

   Work
   Home
   Fax
   Other
   E-mail
   Main
   Pager
   Mobile

You can map any or all of these field labels in Pilot to the corresponding
fields in your PC application. The relative position of the phone numbers
may vary among records in the Address Book. For example, the "Home" phone
number may be in the Phone 1 position in one record, and in the Phone 3
position in another. IntelliSync uses the phone label, rather than the
phone number position, to synchronize the phone numbers.

The following restrictions apply to the treatment of phone numbers:

a) Since the Pilot can hold a maximum of five (5) phone numbers in each
   Address Book record, IntelliSync will only synchronize up to five
   phone number fields with your PC application. If more than five phone
   numbers exist (and are mapped), only the first five phone numbers will
   be synchronized with your Pilot.

b) Only one instance of a phone label can be present in each record.
   This means that IntelliSync does not support synchronizing more than
   one phone number of the same type. For example, if an Address Book
   record has two phone numbers labeled "Work", only one of the two phone
   numbers will end up being synchronized.

==============================
8. TO DO PRIORITY
==============================
The Pilot can accept priority codes in the range 1-5. Since PC applications
use varying schemes for representing priority codes, you should be sure to
use low priority values in your PC application, if at all possible. This will
avoid transformations on the priority code. If IntelliSync sees an incoming
priority code greater than 5, it will set the priority to 5. This means that
an item may have a priority 5 on the Pilot, whereas, the same item retains
its original priority code in the PC application. This disparity in priority
code values is generally benign, and will not result in sync conflicts.
However, if a change is later made to the item on the Pilot, the modified
priority code will be reflected in the PC application at that time.

==============================
9. REPEATING ITEMS
==============================
When repeating items are synchronized with Pilot, they will be "fanned"
if the recurrence pattern cannot be adequately expressed in the Pilot
Date Book application. For example, NetManage Ecco supports an elaborate
choice of repeating item types. If the Pilot is presented with a repeating
item that it cannot accept, the pattern will be fanned into individual
events that collectively represent the repeating item. In such cases,
IntelliSync will only create events within the date range specified in the
Setting dialog. Regardless of date range, IntelliSync applies "reasonable"
limits to the number of generated items in the Pilot. This is done to avoid
cluttering the device memory with these generated items. The following
maximum items will be created from any repeating item of the given type:

Repeating Type     Max Fanned Items
--------------     ----------------
Daily              31
Weekly             52
Monthly            12
Quarterly          8
Yearly             5
All Others         50

==============================
10. NOTE FIELD
==============================
In the Pilot Date Book and To Do applications, the Note field has been
subdivided into five (5) separate fields (visible in field mapping dialog).
This permits mapping other useful data to the various lines in the Pilot
Note field. For example, if you wish to keep data in your To Do records
for which no explicit field exists in the Pilot application, you can go
to the field mapping dialog, and map one or more of the Note lines to the
desired PC application field(s). In this way, you can synchronize more
data than otherwise available in the Pilot application.

Generally, the top-level Pilot field labeled "Note" is mapped to a PC
application field. If this is the case, then the full contents of Note
will be synchronized with the corresponding PC field. If you wish to use
the Pilot Note field to synchronize with multiple fields in your PC
application, map fields Note Line 1-5.

==============================
11. DAY-TIMER ORGANIZER NOTES
==============================
* Both Day-Timer Organizer 2.0 and 2.1 are supported. However, version
   2.1 involves a different program than version 2.0. In order for us
   to communicate with version 2.0, program file DTDDE.EXE must be run.
   Version 2.1 requires that program DTDDEF.EXE be run. IntelliSync will
   automatically attempt to start the Day-Timer program when initiating
   synchronization. If running version 2.1, you will be prompted once to
   re-specify the name of the program to DTDDEF.EXE.

* In order to synchronize with Day-Timer Organizer, IntelliSync must be
   able to locate the Day-Timer DDE Server program located in the Day-Timer
   installation directory. If unable to locate the program using standard
   Windows search path, IntelliSync will prompt you to specify the location
   of Day-Timer on your machine. Once specified, the modified location of
   the DDE Server program will be reused on the next synchronization
   attempt.

* In order to synchronize data with Custom Fields in any of the Day-Timer
   sections, you must set field labels for those fields in Day-Timer (from
   the Setup menu, choose Custom Fields item). Attempting to map Custom
   Fields and synchronizing without first setting the field labels will
   result in a successful operation, but warnings will appear in the log.
   The Custom Fields are not mapped by default.

* Because Day-Timer supports multiple user databases, when IntelliSync
   cannot open a database, it must prompt for database password, user name,
   and user password. If you have password protected your single user
   database, you still need to specify these values. IntelliSync remembers
   the values you specify in an INI file (passwords are encoded) so that the
   next time you access the database, you will not need to respecify the
   password/user information (unless of course the password has changed). To
   access the database as a different user, edit the file ILXDAYT.INI in the
   installation directory, and remove the UserInfo section.

* When choosing a Day-Timer database, a special "file" browser is used.
   This enables you to select or enter a database name, rather than an
   explicit file name. This behavior mirrors that of Day-Timer itself.
   You should not enter an explicit file name nor file extension when
   choosing a Day-Timer database.

==============================
12. LOTUS ORGANIZER NOTES
==============================
* In order to communicate with Lotus Organizer, the application must be
   running. If Lotus Organizer is not already started, we will load it
   automatically before starting the first synchronize operation. In order
   to reduce the likelihood of startup problems, we recommend that you
   manually start Lotus Organizer before initiating HotSync.

* Due to a restriction in the current Lotus Organizer API, a newly-created
   Lotus Organizer file cannot remain open during a synchronization operation.
   To avoid this problem, close the newly-created file before attempting the
   first synchronization operation. After the file has been closed once, it
   may remain open during synchronize operations thereafter.

* In general, Lotus Organizer files can remain open during synchronize
   operations. However, you will need to re-open the data file to see the
   updated information after the synchronize operation has completed.

==============================
13. NETMANAGE ECCO NOTES
==============================
* IntelliSync supports synchronization with Ecco version 3.03 and later only.
   Older versions of Ecco are not supported. To obtain your free upgrade to
   version 3.03, please contact NetManage Customer Support at 206-885-4272,
   or visit the NetManage World Wide Web site at http://www.netmanage.com
   and look to the Ecco section for details on upgrading.

* In order to synchronize with Ecco, the application must be loaded at the
   time of data transfer. IntelliSync will automatically attempt to load
   the Ecco application, using default Windows search paths. If it is unable
   to find the Ecco application, you will be prompted to enter the location
   of the Ecco application. Once specified, the modified location of the
   Ecco application will be reused in subsequent synchronization attempts.

* Following a synchronize operation involving Phone Book records, click on
   Search button in Ecco to refresh the display of the record index. To see
   Memo Pad items in Ecco after a synchronize operation, select the View menu,
   and choose the Folder Window menu item. Select Outline under New Column to
   see the transferred Memo Pad records.

==============================
14. NOW UP-TO-DATE NOTES
==============================
* IntelliSync supports Now Up-to-Date for Windows Version 1.5. While
   the program may also work with version 1.0, there were problems with
   the initial release of Now Up-to-Date that have been fixed in v1.5.
   We strongly recommend that you obtain your free upgrade to v1.5 from
   Now Software, so as to benefit from the improvements made. Call Now
   Software at 503-274-2800 to request your free upgrade.

* Now Up-to-Date does not run under Windows NT. While the application now
   be installed under NT, the Now translator does not operate under NT.
   The Now application runs under either Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.

* Before attempting to synchronize with Now Up-to-Date for Windows 3.1 or
   Now Up-to-Date for Windows 95, the Now application must be manually
   started on your system. This is necessary because exchanging data with
   these applications requires that some Now Up-to-Date files already be
   loaded in memory.

* If using Now Up-to-Date for Windows 3.1, the database MUST BE CLOSED
   prior to initiating a synchronize operation. The last database which
   was opened will always be used for synchronization operations.

* When using Now Up-to-Date for Windows 95, the database MUST BE OPEN in
   for IntelliSync to synchronize its data. The currently-opened database
   will always be used as the source/target database for synchronization.

* New category names should first be created in Now Up-to-Date, if you wish
   to transfer the content of the category field during synchronization. If
   a new category name is found while adding items to Now Up-to-Date, the new
   category will be added to Up-to-Date. However, the Now application will
   not recognize the newly-added category unless you specifically add it using
   the Tools pulldown menu in the application. To avoid potential problems,
   we strongly recommend that any new categories be added in the application
   before attempting synchronization (this is only relevant if the Category
   Name field is mapped).

* After you synchronize data with Now Up-to-Date, you should manually refresh
   the display before doing any work in the database. The display is not
   automatically updated at the end of a synchronize operation, and the
   information on the screen may not be correct and/or complete. Attempting
   to access records without performing a refresh may cause invalid data to
   be displayed for the record.

==============================
15. MICROSOFT SCHEDULE+ NOTES
==============================
* For best results, we strongly recommend that you start the Schedule+
   application before initiating a synchronize operation. This avoids
   potential initialization problems reported under some Schedule+
   configurations.

* Two separate entries exist in the application list to support Schedule+.
   The entry marked "Schedule+ 7.0" supports version 7.0 and higher. This
   entry does not allow you to specify an explicit Schedule+ file name. The
   last active data file will always be used for synchronization purposes.

* The application entry labeled "Schedule+ 7.0 Local Files" supports only
   version 7.0a or later of Schedule+. Version 7.0a is available from
   Microsoft as a free upgrade (contact Microsoft to obtain a copy). This
   later version of the Schedule+ application supports the vendor interface
   necessary to select explicit file names. Aside from file selection,
   there are no feature differences between these two application entries.

* We recommend that Schedule+ be running before attempting a synchronize
   operation. This is to avoid needing to respond to the Schedule+ Login
   dialog in the midst of the synchronize operation. Preloading Schedule+
   before initializing synchronization will avoid interference between the
   Schedule+ and IntelliSync displays.

==============================
16. STARFISH SIDEKICK NOTES
==============================
* Before attempting to synchronize with a Sidekick data file, be sure to
   first close the file so as to avoid a sharing conflict. Failure to close
   the Sidekick file may result in an error while attempting to update the
   data file during synchronization.

* A special "file" browser is used to choose a Sidekick Calendar file
   (to sync with Pilot Date Book or To Do List). This browser enables you
   to choose the Calendar name rather than needing to enter an explicit
   file name. This behavior mirrors the functionality and user interface
   provided in the Sidekick application itself. When choosing a Calendar
   file, you must not enter an explicit file name nor a file extension.
