Delrina WinFax PRO Update README Notes March 4, 1996
==================================================================
The following information reflects changes made for this update to
WinFax PRO 7.0 with TalkWorks, dated March 4, 1996. You should
review this information prior to installing and running the update.

This document also describes changes made since the first edition
of the Delrina WinFax and TalkWorks manuals went to press. Where
applicable, these notes refer to specific sections in the manual.

Patching WinFax PRO 7.0
=======================

You do not need to remove or uninstall your current version of
WinFax PRO 7.0 to install the update. Your current version of
WinFax will be updated, including your phonebooks and logs.

However, if you update WinFax PRO 7.0 and then add TalkWorks later,
you should run the update again to ensure that you have a version
of TalkWorks designed to work with this release of WinFax.

To update WinFax PRO 7.0 and TalkWorks:
1. Run the setup program (SETUP.EXE) on disk #1.
2. To update your mailbox settings, run the Mailbox Wizard.

What's New in TalkWorks
=======================

US Robotics Sportster vi
------------------------
This release adds support for the US Robotics Sportster vi series
of modems. When you install your USR modem, you will be prompted
for new voice prompt files, available from the Delrina Web site,
the Delrina BBS or CompuServe.

1. Download the self-extracting file USRPROMP.EXE.
2. Uncompress the files into a temporary directory.
3. Follow the setup instruction in the file USRMODEM.TXT.

USRMODEM.TXT also describes outstanding issues with specific modems
in this series. You should review this file before running TalkWorks
with a USR modem.

Unimodem/v
----------
This release of TalkWorks will work with the Unimodem/v driver.

Silence Detection slide control
-------------------------------
The Stop Recording When Silent check box on the TalkWorks
Properties dialog has been changed to the Silence Detection
Sensitivity slide control. If your phone system has a lot of line
noise, set this control towards the high end.

Option to leave a message in another mailbox
--------------------------------------------
The asterisk key (*) will now take you back to the main menu after
leaving a voice message or retrieving your messages. You can then
leave a message in another mailbox.

What's New in WinFax
====================

This update resolves a wide variety of problems and performance
issues. The main areas of improvement are:

- time needed to load WinFax programs, print from another program
to send a fax, retrieve and update phonebook and log information
- conversion of WinFax PRO 4.0 cover pages and phonebooks
- DDE issues with PIM phonebooks such as ACT! and Maximizer
- functionality in the Send dialog
- support for Mustek and HP Deskscan v2.3 scanners
- new Word 7.0 and Excel 7.0 macros

WinFax Fast Start
-----------------
Fast Start speeds up the faxing process by loading a streamlined
version of WinFax designed for sending faxes only. With Fast Start
running, you can print to WinFax to send a fax faster, and any
faxes you have scheduled are sent at the appropriate times. This
release of WinFax PRO 7.0 adds the WinFax Fast Start icon to
the Startup group.

Note: You cannot receive faxes automatically using Fast Start. You
must have WinFax or CommBar running or minimized.

To send a fax without opening WinFax:
1. Right click the WinFax Fast Start icon.
2. Click Send Fax. The WinFax Send dialog appears.
3. Address your fax, including any attachments and a cover page.
4. Click Send.

To open the main WinFax window from the WinFax Fast Start icon,
right click the icon and click Start WinFax 7.0. When you close
WinFax, WinFax Fast Start will automatically be reloaded.

You can also close WinFax Fast Start from the right click menu.
Exit Fast Start before uninstalling or reinstalling WinFax.

Quick View
----------
Use Quick Fax Viewer to view and print faxes and attachments
(files with .FX? extensions) from Windows Explorer or your Windows
desktop. To view a file in Quick Fax Viewer, right click on it and
then select Quick View from the menu.

If nothing happens, you may not have Quick View enabled in Windows
95. To enable Quick View:

1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings and click Control
Panel. The Control Panel folder opens.
2. Double click Add/Remove Programs. The Add/Remove Programs
   Properties dialog appears.
3. Click the Windows Setup tab.
4. In the Components list, click Assessories.
5. Click the Details button.
6. In the Components list, enable Quick View and click OK. The
   Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog reappears.
7. Click OK. You may be prompted for your Windows 95 CD.

Save Folder Tree State on Exit
------------------------------
Enable this option on the Program Properties dialog if you only want
WinFax to refresh the last phonebook you accessed in the Phonebook
panel of the Send dialog. This may improve the speed at which the
Send dialog appears. If you disable this option, WinFax refreshes
all existing phonebooks when you display the Send dialog.

Always Launch WinFax When Printing From Another Application
-----------------------------------------------------------
Enable this option to start the full WinFax program when you print
to WinFax from another application. Otherwise, WinFax Fast Start
starts. Disabling this option may improve printing speed.

Getting Information Electronically

General
=======

Call discrimination
-------------------
If you have a Class 1, Windows (TAPI) modem that supports call
discrimination, WinFax with TalkWorks can recognize and handle
data, fax and voice calls. To accept data calls, do the following:

- enable Direct Data Calls in the WinFax Receive Properties dialog
- run or minimize a data program, such as WinComm or PC ANYWHERE in
  host mode
- run or minimize WinFax with Automatic Reception enabled

If Voice Answering is also enabled in WinFax, an additional step is
required for WinFax to recognize and hand off data calls. The sender
must add the following suffix to their dial string when sending data
files:

,,,*,,9*

If you have multiple mailboxes set up in TalkWorks, insert any valid
mailbox number before the 9:

,,,*,,1,,9*

Each comma represents a two-second pause. You may need to adjust the
number of commas.

If you are upgrading from the October 31, 1995 version of WinFax
and you want to use call discrimination, you must remove your modem
and then add it again from the Modem Properties dialog. (On the
Setup menu, click Modem.) Removing and adding your modem resets your
existing modem settings to their defaults.

Receiving from fax machines without tone
----------------------------------------
With TalkWorks added to WinFax, calls from fax machines that do not
initiate fax tone will be treated as voice calls. You can include
instructions in your voice message for fax callers having difficulty
to add the following suffix to their dial string to have WinFax take
the call:

,,,*,,8*

Each comma represents a two-second pause.

If you have multiple mailboxes set up in TalkWorks, insert any valid
mailbox number before the 8. If the caller has a handset on the fax
machine, they can enter the following when TalkWorks answers the call:

* <wait for mailbox prompt> enter mailbox number <wait for password
prompt> 8*

Sending WinFax PRO 4.0 cover pages
----------------------------------
Certain WinFax PRO 4.0 cover pages may cause transmission to train
down or fail part way through sending the cover page. If you have this
problem, disable High Speed Compression (2D) on the Fax tab of your
Modem Properties dialog. To display this dialog, click Modem on the
Setup menu, select your modem and click Properties.

Modem does not Wait for bong
----------------------------
Not all modems support the "Wait for bong" feature for credit card
dialing. To work around this use the "Wait" option and adjust the wait
time as required.

Importing logs into a new message store
---------------------------------------
If you are creating a new message store to hold imported log
records, disable the Compress Fax Messages option.

Using WinFax with a CAS modem
-----------------------------
If you use WinFax PRO 7.0 with a CAS modem, contact the modem
vendor or manufacturer to ensure that you have the appropriate
CAS drivers for Windows 95.

Using WinFax on an IBM ThinkPad with an IBM Mwave modem
-------------------------------------------------------
WinFax requires version 2.0 or later of the Mwave modem software.

Disk space requirements for receiving faxes
-------------------------------------------
WinFax requires a minimum of 1 MB of free disk space to receive
faxes. If your computer does not meet this requirement, WinFax
displays the following error message: "Disk is full. Unable to
receive faxes." Free up at least 1 MB of disk space, close any
other programs and ask the sender to resend the fax.

Fine tuning the WinFax Printer Driver for grayscale faxing
----------------------------------------------------------
If you are sending a fax that contains grayscale images, you
may improve the appearance of the fax by adjusting the settings
for the WinFax printer driver. On the Graphics tab, select Error
Diffusion and set the Intensity at approximately 175.

Using the Delrina WinFax Scanner
--------------------------------
If you already have a WinFax scanner, you will need additional
files in order to use it with WinFax PRO 7.0. If you have the CD
version of CommSuite 95, you can install these files from the
Setup Welcome screen. The files are also available from the
Delrina Web site, the Delrina BBS or on CompuServe.

Using WinFax macros
-------------------
For more information on using WinFax macros, see the WFXMACRO.TXT
file in the directory in which you installed WinFax.

Retrieving BFT events from a remote fax station
-----------------------------------------------
In order to poll a remote fax station for BFT events, ECM must
be enabled on both the polling computer and the remote fax station.

PackRat 4.0 phonebook does not open in WinFax
---------------------------------------------
If you cannot open the PackRat phonebook in WinFax, check that
the path specification in the [Polaris PackRat 4.0] section of your
WIN.INI file is correct.

Expanding and collapsing folders
--------------------------------
Use the plus and minus keys on your keyboard to expand and collapse
folders in WinFax. You can also do this in the phonebook list in the
Send Fax wizard.

Copying column headings
-----------------------
You can now copy column heading settings between folders in the Logs
or Phonebooks window. To copy headings, right click in the folder
list and select the Copy Headings command. Use this feature to quickly
and easily format the way folder information appears.

and Remove buttons no longer appear on the Fax Pages dialog.

Archiving Events (pages 5-11 to 5-12)
-------------------------------------
Events in the default message store are not compressed. Create a new
message store to archive events and have them compress automatically.

Setting Printer Driver Resolution (pages 13-4 to 13-5)
------------------------------------------------------
You can change the resolution on the Send dialog. Click Options and
select the setting in the Resolution drop-down list.

Note: Returning to the default printer driver settings (error
diffusion and intensity at 100) may improve sending performance.

Resetting Toolbar Properties (page 13-37)
-----------------------------------------
The Reset button no longer appears on the Toolbar Properties dialog.

Database Optimizer/Rebuilder Utility (pages A-12 to A-13)
---------------------------------------------------------
The executable file name for the database optimizer/rebuilder utility
has changed to DELFIX.EXE. This file is installed in the directory in
which you installed WinFax. You can run DELFIX from the Run dialog on
the Windows Start menu. If you want to rebuild your database, run
DELFIX.EXE. If you want to optimize your database, run this file with
the "-OPTIMIZE" command line parameter.

TALKWORKS
=========

General
=======

Supported Modems
----------------
TalkWorks supports voice-capable modems based on Rockwell or Cirrus
Logic chipsets. Chipsets by US Robotics (Sportster Vi modems) are
now supported with this release. Sierra Semiconductor or IBM Mwave
are not supported in this release.

While Talkworks supports several internal modems made by Zoom
Technologies, the external VFX 14.4V is not supported at this time.
The Compaq Presario built-in modems are also not supported.

Telephony is an emerging technology and new voice modems are being
released onto the market regularly. You can obtain a current list of
modems that have been tested with TalkWorks and technical notes about
modem-specific problems by calling the Delrina Fax InfoLine at:
(416) 443-1614.

Creative Labs PhoneBlaster
--------------------------
You may experience volume fluctuations when recording memos or
greetings with this modem. To correct the problem, adjust your
Windows 95 volume control settings, as follows:

1. Click the Windows Start button, point to Programs, then Accessories,
then Multimedia, and then click Volume Control. The Recording Control
   dialog appears.
2. On the Options menu, click Properties. The Properties dialog
   appears.
3. Click Recording and then click OK. The Recording Control
   dialog reappears.
4. Click the Advanced button.
5. Enable AGC For WaveIn.

If you experience feedback during "live" phone calls, disable AGC
For WaveIn.

USR Robotics
------------
Sportster vi modem with firmware versions prior to October 1995 do not
always respond to the voice record command. With the internal Sportster
modem, the process can fail with the line open. Firmware upgrades are
available from USR to fix this problem.

Playback of messages recorded with USR modems is quite soft. Use the PC
sound card to play back messages and adjust the volume control.

After a voice call connects but before the prompt is played, the modem
speaker may whine. This is not audible to the caller and stops when the
prompt starts.

Dialing using the TalkWorks Telephone allows the call to be monitored
on the modem speaker. With USR modems, the appropriate DTMF tones are
sent when the user presses the telephone keys, but the speaker does not
remain active.
