                         MXTFMT.EXE README FILE.
                         ------------------------

The program MXTFMT.EXE is intended to be run "ONLY" with a
        MXT540A IDE Maxtor hard drive.

The following text is a quick tutorial of the program.

       1. The main objective of this program, is to provide a LOWLEVEL
format. It is NOT intended as a tool to better understand the
design or makeup of Maxtor products nor was it intended to be
used as a diagnostic tool. Only a lowlevel formatting program.

       2. First, set this drive as the only drive in the system, to prevent
possible errors of deleting data on another hard disk.

       3. To call up the program type in MXTFMT (press return)

       4. A MENU SELECTION SHOULD COME UP WITH SEVERAL OPTIONS.

      A) Read Drive ID ;The Drive model number and firmware version will
                           ;be displayed.

      B) Format Drive ;This section will perform a lowlevel format on
;the entire disk media. The bad spots will be
;allocated. NOTE: all data will be lost!

      C) Read Defect List ;Prints a complex description of the defect areas.
;The number of defects, cyld, head, BFI (bytes
;from index), byte length of defect area.
;Note:The displayed information cannot be changed
;but only displays the current road map of the
;media. Note: Each drive has defects from the
;factory so don't be alarmed when defects show
;up. The display was intended to compare before
;and after results when formatting. Note: Each
;drive is sent with no more than 270 defects/drive.
                           ;Maximum defects/drive = 614
