This readme file contains the following sections:

     - Important Notices - information you should read before running
       Fix-It.
     - User's Guide Addenda - information that was not available at the
time the User's Guide was published.

IMPORTANT NOTICES

1. If you are using Remove-It you should continue to use its Log-It
Monitor function to record application installations in addition to
Fix-It's Change Capture function. Although they both automatcially
record the changes made by a software installation, the information they
record is not compatible. A conversion utility is being developed that
will allow you to use just the Change Capture function to record
application installations, and convert it for use with Remove-It.

2. If you have maintained both Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 active on your
system (Dual Boot), you may see an application listed twice in the
Software Inventory and/or Conflict Detector. These applications are most
likely installed in two separate directories and are probably two
different versions. You should not use the Fix-It command button to
automatically fix a conflict in an application that runs exclusively in
Windows 3.1 especially if the fix involves changes in the Windows 3.1
system configuration files because Fix-It will change the Windows 95
   configuration files.

USER'S GUIDE ADDENDA

General
1. This is a single-user version of Fix-It. You may install it on a
network drive, but it is not licensed for multi-user access. To
inquire about multi-user products and licensing, call Vertisoft Systems
   at 864-295-2623.

3. In list boxes where items are displayed in a heirchical tree, you can
deselect all of the items by clicking the check box at the highest level
in the tree. Then you can select individual items by clicking the check
   box next to the item.

4. When you choose the Fix-It command button to automatically fix problems,
a dialog box is displayed that lists the changes that will be made to
your system. After the Fix-It function is complete, another dialog box
is displayed that lists the changes that were made as well as those items
that could not be changed. These items usually include missing files
that could not be found. This dialog box has a Manual Fix command button
that displays a dialog box from which you can manually locate the missing
   file.

Conflict Detector
1. Those application conflicts that can be fixed automatically by
choosing the Fix-It command button, have a red dot on the icon that is
   next to the conflict name.

2. An application is listed as having an Incomplete installation because
Fix-It's check of its Application Knowledge Base indicated that one or
more of the files that are normally installed for that application is
not in the folder in which it normally resides.

Missing files do not neccessarily indicate a problem. The files may be
missing because you chose a custom or partial installation of the
application. For example, you may not have installed the grammar checker
in Word for Windows. Or the files may be missing because you removed
them on purpose. For example, you may have removed an application's
readme or help files to save disk space.

If you have a problem with an application, missing files could be the
cause for the problem, and you should try installing the missing files
   from the application's installation disk.

You can control which (if any) of the incomplete installation file types
are displayed by choosing the Options command button in the Applications
tab. The default is to display only missing EXE files, but you
can choose to display DLLs, Drivers, Help files, INI files, Fonts,
Multimedia files, Bitmap files, Document files, etc.

3. An application's EXE files are listed as having Missing DLL files
because Fix-It's analysis of the application's EXE files indicated that
they refer to a DLL file that is not in the folder in which it normally
   resides.

Missing DLL files do not neccessarily indicate a problem. The files may
be missing because you chose a custom or partial installation of the
application. Also if the application requires that its CD-ROM be in the
drive for it to run, Fix-It will list the DLL files as missing if the
CD-ROM is not in the drive.

If you have a problem with an application, missing DLL files could be the
cause for the problem, and you should choose the Fix-It command button to
have the missing DLL files found automatically.

You can control if the missing DLL files are displayed by choosing the
Options command button in the Applications tab. The default is to
   not display missing DLL files.

4. The example illustration of the Support Directory has the incorrect phone
number for Vertisoft System's technical support. The correct number is
   864-269-5311.

Preinstallation Inspector
1. You can click in the Company column and type the company name to move the
selection cursor to the names that match what you type; however, you
cannot click in the Application column and type the application name as
   indicated in the User's Guide.

Crash Defender
1. The User's Guide incorrectly indicates that the Crash Defender pop-up
menu provides a Setup command. To access the Crash Defender Setup
dialog box, you must choose the Statistics command from the pop-up menu
and then choose the Setup command button from the Statistics dialog box.

Change Capture
1. The User's Guide indicates that you can manually record changes made to
your system by choosing the Change Capture command in the Fix-It Agent
pop-up menu. This command doesn't exist -- the correct command to choose
is Start Capturing. Also you can manually stop recording changes by
choosing the End Capturing command from the Fix-It Agent menu, not by
choosing Change Capture as indicated in the User's Guide.

2. To configure Change Capture and maintain the Fix-It Recycle Bin, choose
Change Capture Setup from the Fix-It Agent pop-up menu or by choosing
Default Settings from the Fix-It Options menu and then choosing Change
Capture Setup. A dialog box is displayed with four sections.

Change Capture Record Folder lets you select where you wish the
change records to be saved. The default is in the Chgmon folder in the
   Fix-It program folder.

Automatic Capture Setup lets you select if you wish Change Capture to
intercept and record the changes made by application installation
programs. You can add or delete installation program names from the
list of recognized programs using the Add and Delete command buttons.

Automatic Change Recording Setup lets you select if you want Change
Capture to automatically create change records on a periodic basis
(e.g. daily, weekly, etc.). This may be more convenient than being
prompted to record changes every time a change is made to your system.
It also ensures that no changes will go unrecorded. Change Capture's
automatic capture only alerts you to record changes when you run
an application installation program that it recognizes, and when you
choose Add New Hardware, Add/Remove Programs or System from the Windows
Control Panel. If you use Change Remover to remove the changes made to
your system over a day or longer period, you should carefully review
the changes that will be removed because some of the changes that are
in the change record may be desirable.

Erase Protection Setup lets you select if you want Change Capture to
save copies of files that are overwritten or deleted while it is
recording changes. You can also select the maximum size of the Fix-It
Recycle Bin. If you have selected to have Change Capture automatically
create change records on a periodic basis and you update documents
frequently, the Recycle Bin may become full very quickly. The Recycle
Bin command button lets you view the contents of the Fix-It Recycle Bin
and the name of its associated change records. NOTE: If you remove a
backed up file, the associated change record will not be able to remove
some of the changes it recorded, and that may cause a problem with your
system if you partially remove changes.

Change Remover
1. After you remove changes, a change record is created with the name
"Undo removal of <original change record name>". You can use this record
to undo the removal of the changes. After you undo the removal of
changes, another change record is created with the name "Redo removal of
<original change record name>". You can use this record to restore the
   changes you originally made.

Emergency Recovery
1. Emergency Recovery will not work with floppy disks that have been compressed
using DoubleSpace, DriveSpace or Stacker. If you attempt to use a floppy
disk that has a Compressed Volume File (CVF) on it (e.g. dblspace.000,
drvspace.000, Stacvol.dsk), The result will be the following error
message: "Error on Disk A:" This is due to the fact that a floppy disk
with a CVF cannot be formatted. You must first remove the CVF file before
these disks can be formatted under DOS or Windows. Consult your disk
compression program's documentation for instructions on how to remove the
CVF and format floppy disks that have been compressed.

2. Emergency Recovery formats and supports the creation of emergency recovery disks
on both low and high density disks. If you receive a "Track 0 Bad"
error message this may be due to one of two possible causes: You have
selected a format option for the wrong type of disk, or the disk is
defective. First, check the disk type (high or low density) and then make
sure that you select the correct format option. If you are certain that
the selection and disk type are correct, then try another diskette.

3. If you have a 540 MB or larger IDE hard drive that has been partitioned
with Ontrack Computer Systems' Disk Manager software, and you don't have
DMDRVR.BIN and XBIOS.OVL on the bootup disk, Emergency Recovery will think that
the partitions and beginning sectors are wrong and will try to write
back the correct information. This results in a total loss of access to
the drive(s) information and the drive has to be formatted and all
programs must be reinstalled. You may either boot your system and wait
for the drive overlay to load they will need to copy the DMDRVR.BIN
and XBIOS.OVL to the Recovery disk. This is accomplished as follows:

     a. Create a temporary directory on the hard disk
     b. Insert the original Ontrack Disk Manager disk into drive A: or
          drive B:
     c. Copy the files DMDRVR.BIN and XBIOS.OVL from the Ontrack Disk
Manager disk to this temporary directory.
     d. Execute Emergency Recovery
     e. In the Emergency Recovery "Select files to be stored to the Recovery Disk"
          dialog, choose Add.
     f. Locate the temporary directory where the files DMDRVR.BIN and
          XBIOS.OVL were copied.
     g. Hold down the CTRL key and single mouse click on each file to
highlight both so that both files are displayed in the File name:
          text box.
     h. Click the Add command button to add these files to the list of
files to be copied to the Recovery Disk.
     i. After selecting any other files to add to, or store on, the
          Recovery disk, choose finish.

These files will be copied to the Recovery Disk along with all other
selected files during the creation of the emergency recovery
disk. Note that this procedure must be used each time a new Recovery Disk
is created.

**Note: This error was encountered with version 6.03 of Disk Manager - we do
not know what the effects are on version 7.0 of Disk Manager.

Again thanks for choosing Fix-It!
