NAVAID V1.1 QUICK START FOR MS FLIGHT SIMULATOR 5.1

1. Unzip all of the files into a new directory; preferably
not your flight simulator directory (there's enough junk
   there already).

2. Start the program from your Run menu selection or click on
the VOR icon in the directory where you installed it. Until
you register Navaid it will operate in demonstration mode.
It is completely functional in demonstration mode, the only
restriction is that you are limited to the default navigation
aids, airports, and runways in the United States. The
demonstration mode subset consists of the following 5.1
   flight simulator files:

   c:\fltsim5\scenery\arptca.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\arptct.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\arptil.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\arptma.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\arptnh.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\arptnv.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\arptny.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\arptri.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\arptwa.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\atis.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\chicago.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\facility.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\ils_usa.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\la.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\magdec.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\mkb_usa.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\ndb_usa.bgl
   c:\fltsim5\scenery\vor_usa.bgl

                     "c:\\fltsim5\\scenery\\mkb_usa.bgl\0"

For a description of these files, see "How To Select Flight
Simulator Data Files" in the online manual.

Note: These files must be located in the default
         installation directory: c:\fltsim5\scenery.
If this is not the directory where you installed
the flight simulator, you will need to create
it and copy the files there. You will need
approximately 570K of free disk space to do this.
If necessary, you can omit CHICAGO.BGL, LA.BGL, and
MAGDEC.BGL, saving 370K. The runways at Chicago Meigs
and Avalon Catalina are all that will be missing.

After you register Navaid, this restriction is no longer in
effect and you can load any flight simulator data file you want,
from any drive and directory you choose.

3. That's pretty much it. The "Display" menu controls what is
displayed. The zoom menu zooms. The button bar buttons are
shortcuts for some of the menus. You have to zoom in to at
least 1:3000000 before any labels appear. If you click on
something, the program will tell you what it knows about it.
If you're interested or get frustrated read on. The manual
is online and available from the Help menu.

GPS

I've tried the GPS on several computers and it works fine
everywhere except when I'm using the FS on my Win95 system
There, it won't even talk to another simulator so I think the
problem is with Win95. I'm still investigating. If either
computer is slow (less than 50 MHz) there's a lot of jitter
in the reported position. I suspect the FS is dropping
characters or I haven't got the handshake right, yet.

There's a communication rate in the GPS called "Standby".
I use this for testing so that I didn't have to constantly
get the FS going on the other computer. It will give you
an idea of how it works without going through the trouble
of hooking up a second computer, etc. See the online manual.

MISC_USA.BGL and MISC_EUR.BGL

The flight simulator data base is not organized around
airport facilities. There is no relationship between runways,
airport menu entries, ILS, or ATIS transmitters. Navaid
basically goes on a treasure hunt during initialization
correlating all this information around Airport menu entries.
There are a lot of runways which you can land at, but can't
start from because they are not enumerated in the menu system.
MISC_USA.BGL and MISC_EUR.BGL contain these.

Note: Not only will these files give you more airports to look
at, they prevent Navaid from associating runways with airports
they don't belong to. I simply extracted the runway information
and added the airport name. The radios are not set and the aircraft
is situated in the middle of the runway - not the end. You are
probably better off keeping these in your Navaid directory rather
than your flight simulator directory.

MAPS

The map of the United States was constructed from a USGS 2M
DLG. The rest were obtained from the World Data Bank II, a
declassified CIA map data base. All of the maps except the
US are packed and need to be imported with the "Import Map"
menu selection in the File menu before they can be used.
The additional maps cover the Caribbean, Hawaii, Europe, Japan,
and the United Kingdom.

There are other maps available covering Central and Eastern
Canada, Australia-New Zealand, Mexico-Central America,
South America, Western Canada, Alaska, Africa, the Azores,
Scandinavia, and Michigan. Addiditonal maps will be made available
in the future.
