*****AFTER DARK 4.00 ENGINE BETA5 FOR WINDOWS 95*****

THANK YOU for testing the 4.00 Engine. We identified several crucial
problems as a result of Beta Tester bug reports.

1. You have just downloaded Beta5 for the After Dark 4.00 Engine. This
should be the last 4.0 Engine Beta release that does not include new
modules.

After you have unzipped the downloaded Beta5 files, double click
SETUP.EXE and simply follow the install instructions.

2. PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE DOCUMENT before testing, especially
the KNOWN BUGS. It will save you a lot of time both in testing and in
reporting bugs to us.

3. When composing a Beta report to be sent over the Internet, the subject
line should contain very specific information: (1) the Product, (2) the Beta
version, and (3) the Bug Priority (see below for details).

Example: ADW400 B5 P3

 (3) Priority definitions:
        1=Crash.
        2=Feature not working (at all).
        3=Feature working incorrectly.
        4=Aesthetic problem (eg, art or spelling).
        5=Feature request.
If your report includes different priorities, include the highest priority
number in the subject line.

4. Please include a list of the hardware components which make up your
PC. In particular, we are interested in your video and sound cards, as well
as how much RAM memory you have installed. If you are using drivers
other than those that come with Windows 95, please include that
information.

5. If you find a bug. . .
a) Please try to reproduce it with all non-Berkeley Systems executables
disabled. If it does look like a conflict, please determine which executables
are involved.
b) If the bug involves non-BSI modules in Randomizer, please try to
reproduce the bug using BSI modules only.

6. PLEASE RESPOND AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE: the earlier we get
reports the sooner we can deal with them. Even if you find no bugs, please
send us a little note so we know you tried it and so that you will be
considered for future betas.

KNOWN PROBLEMS and EXPECTED BEHAVIORS

bug, please check to make sure it is not in this list. When reporting a bug,
please provide complete information.

If you are reporting a GPF or Page Fault, include a DETAILS printout from
the Windows 95 error message. Also, please include explicit information
about what you were doing before the GPF occurred.

THINGS TO TEST

Here is a list of some things to concentrate on when you test. PLEASE do
not limit your testing to the areas mentioned below.

1. RANDOMIZER: Run a Randomizer overnight with all your After Dark
modules as many nights as possible. There are still several reports from
Beta Testers of crashing bugs running Randomizer. Please do everything
you can to determine which module is causing the crash.

2. MODULES: As with previous Betas, Beta5 does not install any modules
in addition to the After Dark 3.0 release. We are however, interested in the
behavior of all Berkeley Systems modules as well as third party modules
designed to function with After Dark.

Test them stand alone and in Randomizer (by themselves and with other
Berkeley Systems modules). If you experience a failure, let us know which
module was displayed on the screen when the failure occurred. If you find a
bug that involves non-BSI modules in Randomizer, please try to reproduce
the bug using BSI modules only.

3. SOFTWARE COMPATIBILITY: Test the screen saver with all your
favorite applications, utility programs, etc. Please test After Dark's sleeping
and waking functionality with all E-Mail, modem and other "alert-sending"
software (e.g., calender applications). Test with the autosave feature of
your applications. Let After Dark sleep over long print jobs and graphics
programs.

When reporting a bug, please specify the name and version number of the
conflicting program and whether it is beta or released. If it's shareware, tell
us where we can get it.

4. MUSIC and SOUND: Test all sounds and music (you must have a sound
card to hear sounds). Do all sounds play? Is there any distortion or other
unwanted sounds?

5. VIDEO: Test in all bit depths and resolutions available to you.

6. ACTIVATION MODES: Please be sure to test the modules in Mini and
Full-Screen Preview mode. Try the hot-key activation mode and allow the
screen saver to fall asleep using the time-out feature.

7. MEMORY: Please test with low and high amounts of memory. To
emulate low memory conditions, you can open several applications and then
activate After Dark. Modules should always fail gracefully in low-memory
conditions.
