This README file explains how to update your version of
Quicken 5 for Windows to release 5.0e, which corrects a

includes the fix to problems with Subcategory Merge and
File Validate.

For a detailed list of changes included in this release,
go to the end of this file and review the sections titled
"CHANGES MADE TO QUICKEN 5 FOR WINDOWS IN THIS RELEASE".

The following products can be updated with this disk:
Quicken 5.0 for Windows
Quicken Deluxe 5.0 for Windows Floppy
Quicken Deluxe 5.0 for Windows CD
Quicken Financial Suite CD

STEP 1: CHECK THE RELEASE NUMBER OF YOUR VERSION OF QUICKEN
===========================================================
1. Start Quicken 5 for Windows.

2. Choose "About Quicken" from the Help menu.

3. Look at the lower right corner of the window.
If it says "Release 5.0d" or lower, proceed
   to the next step.
If it says "Release 5.0e," you already have the lastest
release and you do not need to install this update.
(Note: There were no 5.0a or 5.0b releases.)

4. Exit Quicken 5 for Windows. Also, if you have Quicken
Deluxe or Quicken Financial Suite, exit all applications
you are currently running (such as Quicken Home Inventory,
Finance 101, or Quicken Financial Planner).

STEP 2: INSTALL RELEASE 5.0e
============================

You may install the update from the floppy disk or
copy the floppy's contents to an update directory on
your hard disk.

1. Make sure the update disk is in drive A or drive B.

2. If you choose to install from the update floppy disk,
skip this step and proceed to step 3.

Copy the update file to your UPDATE directory.

Win 3.1: From File Manager, click the "a" or "b" icon,
select all of the files on the update floppy disk. From
   the File menu, choose Copy.
Type "c:\update\", and then press Enter.

Win 95: From Windows Explorer, select the A or B drive.
Select all of the files on the update floppy disk and
   drag the files to c:\update.

3. Run the update file.

Win 3.1: From Windows File Manager, double-click
   the UPDATE.EXE file.

Win 95: From Windows Explorer, double-click the
   UPDATE.EXE file.

4. Follow the instructions on the screen. When the
Update window appears, verify the directory containing
your Quicken 5 for Windows program files.
For example, if you installed Quicken 5 in the default
directory, it will display c:\quickenw. If it is
   correct, click OK.

If the displayed directory is incorrect, type the path
of the directory where the Quicken 5 files are located
   and click OK.

5. If the update program displays this message: "Patch warning.
Old File does not exist," click OK to close the message box
   and continue the update.
The update program is trying to update a Quicken Deluxe or Quicken
Financial Suite application that you have not installed.

STEP 3: CHECK THAT RELEASE 5.0e IS PROPERLY INSTALLED
=====================================================
1. Start Quicken 5 for Windows.

2. Choose "About Quicken" from the Help menu.

3. Look at the lower right corner of the window. If it says
"Release 5.0e," release 5.0e was properly installed.

4. If it says "Release 5.0," double-check the directory in
which Quicken 5 for Windows is located and repeat
"STEP 2: INSTALL RELEASE 5.0e" above.

STEP 4: REMOVE THE FILES IN THE UPDATE DIRECTORY
================================================
If you chose to install the Update from your hard disk,
you can safely remove the contents of the UPDATE directory
once you confirm that release 5.0e was successfully installed.

CHANGES MADE TO QUICKEN 5 FOR WINDOWS IN THIS RELEASE
=====================================================
Performance
1. For Windows 95, NT and OS/2, Quicken will no longer take up
all of the CPU cycles when Quicken is idle.

CheckFree
1. Email will no longer allow lines to wrap and limits lines to
60 characters so they will not be truncated during
   transmission.

Validate
1. Validate will correct duplicate transaction IDs in an online
   account.

Online Banking
1. Online Banking now handles error conditions that occur during
   transmission.

File Operations
1. The message after successfully completing File Restore now
instructs users to open the file if no file is currently open.
This was done to reduce confusion with the File Restore
   feature.
2. An error message will now be displayed if File Restore or
   File Copy fail.

Reports
1. The Copy to Clipboard now no longer drops the first two lines of
   the report.
2. Reports will now pick up the opening balances of accounts that
have the Opening Balance as the sole transaction.

Win 95 Shell Extension
1. Quicken now bypasses writing Reminder information to the
qwshellx.ini file during start up. This was done to avoid some
intermittent GPFs that could be caused by reading in corrupted
   Reminder information.
