A. Getting Started
===============================================================

To get started with this software, we recommend following
the steps below.

1. If you have not already, install the software by running
   the INSTALL.EXE program on your original disk. Consult the
   "Getting Started" section of the User's Guide if you are
   unfamiliar with the process of installing and uninstalling
   Windows programs.
2. Be sure to review the entire contents of this README file.
3. If you are the type of person who likes to use the printed
   documentation for learning software, read the FontHandler
   User's Guide. In particular, please note the sections on
   "Running FontHandler For The First Time" on page 4 and
   "Notes For Upgraders" on pages 37 and 38.
4. Alternately, if you are the type of person who likes to
   just "jump in" and begin using any new program, see the
   QualiType online Help "Visual Help" sub-system. This is
   a point-and-click guide to the main features and functions
   of our programs. Note the printed User's Guide section on
   "Using The QualiType Help File" on page 2 as well.
5. Finally, if you have not already set up a font-storage
   system on your computer, you may want to do so before
   beginning to work with FontHandler. See the User's Guide
   section on "Setting Up Your Font System" on page 3, plus
   Appendix A "Windows and Font Files" and Appendix B
   "Moving and/or Copying Font Files" for complete details.

B. Additional News and Information
===============================================================

1. Supplemental Online Help Files
=================================
For information on using QualiType Keyboard or the new
"FontHandler Utilities" included in this version, see the
online Help files for each program. There is no printed
documentation for QTKeyboard, QTCleanUp, or QTConverter.
However, Appendix B of the FontHandler User's Guide covers
some information about using the QualiType Font File Mover
program which you may want to review in addition to the Font
Mover program's online Help.

2. Installing Over FontHandler Version 1.0
==========================================
FontHandler 2.x installs into a new directory structure
compared to the default location for FontHandler 1.0. If you
are upgrading from FontHandler version 1.0, you can continue
to use the 1.0 version for productive work while you explore
and learn the 2.x version. Please note that we recommend only
running ONE of each release at a time. For best results you
should exit any currently-running instance of one release
before launching a copy of the other release.

In addition, the QTConverter utility included with the new
FontHandler can be used to import your current 1.0 format font
groups into the new 2.x data format. (QTConverter can also
import "font packs" from any 2.x release of the FontMinder(tm)
program from Ares Software Corporation. See the online Help
for QTConverter for complete details.)

Once you have imported your groups and gotten comfortable with
FontHandler 2.x, the older 1.0 version may be removed from your
system by simply deleting the directory and files where the
program is stored. No extra INI files or other configuration
information needs to be removed for FontHandler version 1.0,
and no "uninstall" utility is necessary at all.

However, if you have used the font-file compression feature
in FontHandler 1.0 please see the next note...

3. QTC Compressed-Font File Format Changed
==========================================
For technical reasons, the *.QTF ("QualiType Font") file
format of compressed font files in FontHandler 1.0 has been
changed to a new *.QTC ("QualiType Compressed") file format.
We regret the inconvenience, but please install any compressed
*.QTF files with FontHandler 1.0 (in order to uncompress them)
before attempting to use them with FontHandler 2.0.

See the "Notes for Upgraders From FontHandler 1.0" section of
the User's Guide on page 37 for additional information.

4. "Cannot Read Drive" Errors
=============================
Some types of removable disk drives may exhibit a problem
where FontHandler cannot access the drive. This is because
the driver is reporting an incorrect "drive not ready"
message to Windows.

To correct the problem, edit the QTCOMMxx.INI file in your
FontHandler directory, in the [options] section, to say
something like this...

      [options]
      Assume Fixed=I: H: A:

...where the "Assume Fixed" line indicates the drive letter(s)
of any disk drive(s) with the not-ready problem. This change
tells FontHandler to treat the removable disk drive as though
it was a permanent, fixed disk drive, which will correct the
not-ready problem.

5. EXTRA Files On The FontHandler Disk
======================================
There are six extra files in the \EXTRAS directory on your
original FontHandler disk which are NOT copied to the hard
disk by the QualiType installer program. These files are...

* LHA213.EXE
      A "freeware" file-archiving utility from Haruyasu
      Yoshizaki. LHA v2.13 may be used to decompress
      FontHandler *.QTF and/or *.QTC compressed-format
      font files as well as the WRITE_31.LZH file
      (described below).
* EXTRACT.EXE
      Another file-decompression program which may be
      used to manually unpack any of the compressed
      files ending with an "!" character in the root
      directory of the FontHandler disk. Use this
      program to unpack and manually install any of
      the FontHandler files if the INSTALL.EXE program
      cannot run for some reason.
* CTL3DV2.DLL
      The Microsoft "3D Controls" library file for
      enabling the three-dimensional look in all
      Windows programs. Copy this file to your hard
      drive (to the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory) if
      you do not already have it on your system.
* FONTHAND.DOT
      This is a Word for Windows template file which
      may be used to integrate FontHandler with Word,
      so that a button and menu command to launch
      FontHandler appears on the Word toolbar and
      under the "Tools" menu.

      To use this file, simply copy it to your Word
      for Windows \STARTUP directory. The next time
      you start Word, the button and menu item for
      FontHandler will appear. To remove this feature,
      simply move or delete the FONTHAND.DOT file from
      the \STARTUP directory again.

      Note that if you install FontHandler to a disk
      drive or directory other than the default, you
      must edit the macro contained in this template
      file to point to the correct program location.
      See your Word for Windows documentation for more
      information on *.DOT files, editing macros, and
      template files in the \STARTUP directory.
* FONTHAND.TXT
      This is an example text file for changing the
      paragraph text used in the FontHandler Sample
      printing "Paragraph" page layout. Copy this file
      to your FontHandler directory and edit the text
      contained in it to change the "Paragraph" text.
* WRITE_31.LZH
      This LHA archive file contains a copy of the
      WRITE.EXE and WRITE.HLP program files from Windows
      3.1 which are needed for the FontHandler Custom
      Sample Printing feature. Unpack this archive file
      with the LHA v2.13 program (described above) and
      copy the WRITE.* files to your FontHandler home
      directory if you do not have a copy of the Windows
      3.1 version "Write" program available on your system.

C. Special Notes on Windows 95 and FontHandler 2.5
===============================================================

The following six notes relate ONLY to Windows 95. If you are
only running Windows 3.1x and FontHandler 2.0 this section may
be ignored.

6. Dual-Boot of Windows 3.1x and Windows 95
===========================================
If you are running BOTH versions of Windows you may install
FontHandler 2.0 and 2.5 to separate locations or to the
same location, as you prefer. If the programs are installed
to the same location, they will share data files (such as
font-group files) and if they are installed independently
they will each use their own data files. You may use whichever
method you like better since ALL files for each version are
fully independent of one another. (The only "common" file
between the two versions is the KMHOOK.DLL library file
for QualiType Keyboard.)

7. Long Filenames and Fonts
===========================
FontHandler 2.5 does not support long filenames under
Windows 95. In general this applies only to folder names
since Microsoft does not support or recommend using long
filenames for ANY program-file (TrueType *.TTF and/or Adobe
Type Manager *.PFB/*.PFM font files are considered to be
"system" or program files the same as *.COM *.EXE or *.DLL
program files). Long filenames under Windows 95 should
generally be used ONLY for data files.

The next version of FontHandler will likely support long
filenames for font-storage folders, but for now please limit
any folders you create for font storage to eight characters
according to the older rules under DOS and Windows 3.1x.

8. Windows 95 HELP Color Problems
=================================
Due to a bug in the Windows 95 online Help system, the colors
in all QualiType Help files may sometimes not appear correct,
rendering the Help file unreadable on screen.

If you are having trouble with a QualiType Help file, please
ensure that your system's color scheme is set up to use a
WHITE background for all document-windows. To change your
system colors, right click on the desktop, select PROPERTIES
and then click on the APPEARANCE tab. Select "Window" from the
"Item:" listbox and select the color WHITE from the "Color:"
listbox. Click the OK or APPLY buttons and then return to
the QualiType Help file and see if the problem has gone away.

9. WRITE.EXE Needed For Win95 Custom-Sample Printing
====================================================
FontHandler 2.5's Custom-Sample font printing feature works
with the Windows Write (WRITE.EXE) program from Windows 3.1.
The next version of FontHandler will use the newer WordPad
program provided with Windows 95, but for now you must keep
a copy of the actual Windows 3.1 WRITE.EXE in the FontHandler
directory to use the Custom Sample feature.

Note also that the Windows 95 "WRITE.EXE" stub-program for
launching WordPad is not sufficient: you must use the actual
Windows Write program from Windows 3.1. A copy is available
on your original FontHandler disk in the file WRITE_31.LZH
if you do not have access to a computer running Windows 3.1.

10. Screen Font *.FON Files
==========================
Windows 95 uses certain *.FON format font files for drawing
system elements like menus and dialog boxes on the screen.
These font files are present in the \WINDOWS\FONTS folder
with the "Hidden" and/or "System" attribute enabled. (Exactly
which files are present here depends on what video driver
you have installed.)

DO NOT MOVE OR DELETE any of these *.FON files or Windows
may not look right, or even be able to start! FontHandler
does not support bitmap/system *.FON files so if you ALWAYS
use FontHandler to manage your fonts you will be safe.

In addition, if something goes wrong with your configuration
for these bitmap/screen fonts, you can usually correct the
trouble by switching your system to use the standard VGA
(640x480, 16 color) video driver provided with Windows, and
then switching back again to your preferred video driver.

11. The Windows 95 MARLETT Font
===============================
Windows 95 uses a special TrueType font named "Marlett".
This font contains 35 graphic characters, mapped to the
slots for "zero" to "nine" and the lowercase "A" to "Y".
These characters are used to create key screen-graphic
elements in the Windows 95 user interface, such as the
MINIMIZE/MAXIMIZE and CLOSE button icons.

Since the Marlett font can NEVER be uninstalled (it is
loaded by Windows' GDI sub-system, NOT the usual TrueType
font sub-system) QualiType FontHandler has been specifically
designed to IGNORE this font in your installed-font lists.
Thus you will never be bothered by seeing this required
Windows "system" font in your font management activities
with FontHandler.

However, this is not true of most application programs, so
you will most likely see the "Marlett" font listed in the
font menu of your word processing and graphics/DTP software
even if you did not specifically try to install the Marlett
font. There is nothing FontHandler can do about this. In
addition, the MARLETT.TTF font file MUST be available in
the Windows 95 FONTS folder, like the special "hidden" *.FON
files noted above. Do not try to delete the MARLETT.TTF file
or Windows will not look right.

12. The Windows 95 FONTS Folder
===============================
Windows 95 has a special feature in the system FONTS folder
(accessed by the Explorer or via the Control Panel) to
automatically install any TrueType font files that reside
there whenever the folder is accessed.

You can prevent this feature from unexpectedly changing
your installed-font list by simply not keeping any font
files in the FONTS folder (except, of course, the REQUIRED
font files as noted above!). For detailed information about
moving font files to a different folder, see the FontHandler
User's Guide Appendix B "Moving and/or Copying Font Files"
or the online Help topic of the same name.
