PC INSTALLATION

1) You must have a LEXIS(R)-NEXIS(R) ID that supports:
     a) FREESTYLE(TM) Searching
     b) An option to print to an attached printer and
        remote LEXIS-NEXIS printer
     c) No Password

   (To make any changes to your LEXIS-NEXIS ID, call
   your LEXIS-NEXIS account representative)

2) Multiple reinstalls will put multiple LEXIS-NEXIS
   icons on the Word 6.0 tool bar. To delete the extra
   icons, select Tools, then Customize from the
   pull down menu and drag the icon off the toolbar.

3) Word 2.0 could not be automated to add the toolbar
   icon.

4) Setup will not allow you to install Online Connection
   to both WordPerfect 6.0 and WordPerfect 6.1 in order to
   prevent having both WP6.0 and WP6.1 icons on the LEXIS-NEXIS
   Toolbar. WP6.0 and WP6.1 share code and if you try to launch
   one while the other is open, memory conflicts will occur.

5) Older versions of Folio VIEWS 3.1 may require two patch
   disks (31updt.zip 8/31/94 and 31fix2.zip 10/28/94). You can
   download these from the LEXIS-NEXIS bulletin board at
   1-800-453-5392.

6) Memory restrictions within WordPerfect 6.1 prevent the user
   from Adding Sources from WordPerfect 6.1. To get around this
   Add the sources from the OLC dialog from the Toolbar.

LAN INSTALLATION

Online Connection can be installed on workstations that are
accessing the following network applications:

Microsoft Word (versions 2.0 and 6.0)
WordPerfect (versions 5.2, 6.0 and 6.1)
Ami Pro (version 3.0)
Folio Views 3.1 or 3.1a
BViews 3.1 or 3.1a
Lexis Counsel Connect 3.2
CheckCite 4.10
CiteRite 5.10
CompareRite 5.03
FullAuthority 5.10
LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software for Windows (versions 4.0)

To do so, the LAN Administrator executes the following steps:

1) Copy the Online Connection installation diskettes into a
   setup directory (for example: g:\OLCSETUP\) on the network.

2) Use a text editor to make the following modifications in
   the LEXISET.INS file located in the new setup directory.

     a) Set ScanDrive=false
        This will prevent the setup program from reading the
        user's network drive.

     b) For each network application in which you would like to
        install Online Connection, add the complete path to that
        application's executable in the applicationpath= entry.
        For those applications in which you do not wish to
        install Online Connection, leave the entry blank.

     c) You can customize the default list of LEXIS-NEXIS
        library and files in the section titled [Library/Files].

     d) Run the setup program. When setup has successfully
        completed, edit the LEXISET.INS file in the install
        directory (not the copy in the WINDOWS directory)
        setting ScanDrive back to true (ScanDrive=true).

Next, The user must run setup.exe from the new network setup
directory (for example: G:\OLCSETUP\SETUP). This will
automatically copy the appropriate files to the user's
Windows and Windows\System directories. This should be all that is
required for most LAN installations.

NOTE TO NETWORK APPLICATION USERS:

All preference paths for macros, templates, etc. must point to
subdirectories to which you have read write access. (See explaination
of LOCATIONS OF FILES COPIED TO APPLICATION DIRECTORIES below).

NOTE TO MS WORD USERS:

Setup first attempts to modify Normal.dot in the user's directory.
If the file does not exist in the user's directory, OLC Setup will
attempt to modify Normal.dot in the Workgroup directory.

The directory either needs to be write accessible by the user,
or the NORMAL.DOT file must be removed from the directory causing
OLC Setup to create the file in the user's directory.

SPECIAL LAN INSTRUCTIONS

For most LAN Installations this is all that is required. However,
if the LAN administrator does not want the users to have to run the
setup program locally, they will need to manually copy the following
files to the user's workstation.

An example of this would be those networks where the PCs are in
a lab type environment where a given PC could be used by any number
of users.

To help the LAN Administrator in special LAN configurations
the following paragraphs are provided to describe the files
copied by the Setup program and their purpose. From these descriptions
it should be possible to determine what needs to be done in order to fit
Online Connection into any LAN environment.

File:  LEXISET.INS

Location: Install Directory

Description:
     As mentioned above, this is the first file of concern for the LAN
     Administrator. It tells the Setup program:

     1) where to look for applications
     2) whether to search the install target drive for applications
     3) assigns a default directory for the LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software
     4) provides a list of all available applications.

File:  LEXIS-GA.INI

Location: WINDOWS Directory

Description:
     This is the User Preference file for the Online Connection Software.
     It has settings for the:

     1) Saved search list
     2) Library/Files list
     3) Position of the Toolbar
     4) Temporary file subdirectories
     5) Default settings for several options under the [OPTIONS]
        heading of the file. This file must be copied for each
        user as it will be dynamic and unique for each user.

File:  VIEWS.INI and BVIEWS.INI

Location: Wherever VIEWS and bound versions of VIEWS were installed.

Description:
     These files are the User Preference files for either VIEWS or
     bound versions of VIEWS. As well as User Preferences they
     hold information specific to infobases. These files must be copied
     for each user for they are dynamic and specific to the needs of each
     user.

LEXIS-NEXIS TOOLBAR

1) Display of the LEXIS-NEXIS toolbar is a configurable option.

2) If you have both Word 2.0 and Word 6.0 icons on the
   LEXIS-NEXIS toolbar, the toolbar will not allow you to have
   both versions open at the same time. Both toolbar icons will
   point to the Word application that was opened first.

3) The toolbar will be added to the LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software
   program group. If there is no LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software
   program group, a new LEXIS-NEXIS Toolbar program group will
   be created.

4) When you close the toolbar, the LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software
   closes.

5) When you close the LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software, the toolbar
   does not automatically close.

6) The toolbar may be customized. To do so refer to the Online Help.

DOWNLOADING TO WORD PROCESSING AND FOLIO VIEWS

1) In the Citation and Get tabs, the Download To Application
   list box is defaulted to whatever application launched
   the LEXIS-NEXIS toolbar.

2) The Default Download Directory is a static text field. It
   reflects what the default download directory is set to in
   the LEXIS-NEXIS Windows Research Software version 4.0.

3) All downloads from the toolbar to Folio VIEWS and BVIEWS
   use the LEXIS-NEXIS import filter for creating, appending or
   inserting LEXIS documents to an infobase.

4) Downloads of large documents or document sets may take an
   extreme amount of time. Although the download may appear
   to be complete, it is NOT complete until the data appears in your
   target application. DO NOT interfere with your application
   until the data appears in your target application as this may result
   in data loss.

SAVED SEARCH LIST

1) The saved search list is limited to a 1K buffer, which is
   equivalent to about 100 saved searches. The maximum number of
   saved searches will vary depending upon the type of searches
   saved.

2) If you have a mixture of saved searches in the search list
   (some saved with client validation on and some saved with
   client validation off), execution of saved searches will react
   differently depending upon if client validation is on or off in
   the LEXIS-NEXIS Windows Research Software when executing
   saved searches.

3) UPDATE does not save searches in the Saved Search List. Update
   is enabled only for those customers that are using CD-ROM's that
   are configured to work with the LEXIS-NEXIS Update feature.

ONLINE CONNECTION SPECIAL OPTIONS

1) You can configure Online Connection by changing the following
   LEXIS-GA.INI and the LEXISET.INS entries:

    HideButtonText=0
        Removes the Online Connection icon from toolbar

GENERAL INFORMATION AND POTENTIAL PROBLEMS

1) SETUP.EXE will NOT run under Windows NT.

2) If the LEXIS-NEXIS Windows research software times out while
   the download from the LEXIS-NEXIS toolbar download dialog box
   is open, if you click OK to continue with the download
   the PC will eventually lock.

3) Switching to other applications while downloading may cause
   problems.

4) If the toolbar has the focus and you hit the Esc key, the
   PC locks.

5) In AmiPro, if you have a document open and do a download
   to AmiPro creating a new document, but give it the same
   name as the open document, you will see a message that
   the document exists, replace? If you answer Yes, the PC locks.

6) AmiPro and Word must have a document open or be in the
   new document state to access the Online Connection or
   a GPF may occur.

7) Citation searches submitted from within an application with the
   download set for Views or BViews will not be run through the
   LEXIS-NEXIS import filter. It is recommended the user select
   "None - Stay in LEXIS" as the target for the citation download.
   When the search is complete the user should download from the
   toolbar to Folio VIEWS or BVIEWS forcing the data through
   the import filter.

 8) Boolean and Freestyle searches are limited to 256 characters in the
    "Search Request" edit field of the Online Connection Main Dialog Tab.

 9) Citation searches are limited to 128 characters in the "Search
    Requested" edit field of the Online Connection Main Dialog Tab.

 10) Drag select search formulation for any search type is limited to
     128 characters . If more than 128 is selected, the search string will
     be truncated (in some cases it will be truncated to 0). If more than
     128 characters is needed, Windows "Copy" and "Paste" clipboard
     functions may be used.

 11) If both AutoCite and Shepards are selected, and the default download
     Application is "None - Stay in LEXIS", you will only receive the
     AutoCite data when downloading from the toolbar.

 12) When appending a Citation download to a Folio infobase, there are no
     "Retrieving Document" messages displayed.

 13) Tabular type data may become skewed when downloaded to a word
     processor if the word processor is not set up to use fix type fonts.

 14) DO NOT use Boolean search connectors in the Freestyle "Search Request"
     edit field. The connectors may cause problems with Online Connection.

 15) MVP ID users must use care to use only those Library/Files to which they
     have access. It is recommended they prepopulate their Library/File
     list to only those Library/Files to which they have access.

 16) When executing a program link launching Online Connection's Main
     Dialog Tab, the view field always defaults to KWIC. Program links
     designed to autosubmit do not change the view field.

 17) All LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software User Preferences must be set prior to
     executing the LEXIS-NEXIS toolbar. Changing preferences after the
     toolbar is launched may result in problems.

 18) You can only select to download the current document or all documents
     when viewing an answer set in Cite mode. Anything else will result in an
     error message. If you need to select a range or specific documents,
     choose a view mode other than Cite.

 19) Documents cannot be downloaded to a Folio Views active infobase or
     shadow file if your cursor is within the Table of Contents.

 20) Online Connection may not work in some ADF files.

ADVANCED SEARCH FEATURES

Creating a Pre-Defined LEXIS-NEXIS Search with OLCLINK:

Online Connection was built specifically to allow users to
launch LEXIS-NEXIS searches from Folio VIEWS, Word,
WordPerfect, and AmiPro.

However, the program, OLCLINK.EXE allows you to launch
Online Connection in virtually any state from any custom
application (or even from the command line).

In addition, by using the command line parameter string, you
can create a pre-defined search. This capability allows users
or CD-ROM publishers to create enhanced program links for Folio
VIEWS infobases.

The format for creating pre-determined LEXIS-NEXIS searches is
as follows:

     Citation Search:

          OLCLINK.EXE  Search Type|Date of Search|Client|Search|Type of
                       Search|Shep's Selective Display|Download application

     Non-Citation Search:

     BOOLEAN:
          OLCLINK.EXE Search Type|Date of Search|Client|Library;File
                      |Date restriction;Date restrictionyear;
                      Date restriction year|View of Search|Search

     FREESTYLE:
          OLCLINK.EXE Search Type|Date of Search|Client|Library;File
                      |Date restriction;Date restriction year;
                      Date restriction year|View of Search|Search
                      |Mandatory Terms|Max # of Docs|

    Note: This is the same as Boolean except you add Mandatory Terms
          and Max # of Docs at the end.

     LEXCITE:
	  OLCLINK.EXE Search Type|Date of Search|Client|Library;File
                      |Date restriction;Date restriction year;
                      Date restriction year|View of Search|Search
                      |Additional terms

    Note: You do not have to add the Additional terms at the end;
          just end with a pipe, |.

Search Type:	Non Auto-submit       	Auto-submit
		B=Boolean		I=Boolean
		C=Citation		H=Citation
		F=FREESTYLE		J=FREESTYLE
		X=Lexcite		K=Lexcite

Type of Search (for Citation or Get):
               1= Auto-Cite;
               2= Shepard's;
	       3= Auto-Cite & Shepard's
               4= LEXSEE
               8= LEXSTAT

Date restriction:
                0= N/A	Date restriction year: If none, use " 0;; "
		1= Date After
		2= Date Before
		3= Date Between
		4= Date Is

	        Examples: Date after 1980 would be |1;1980;|
                          N/A would be |0;;|

View of Search:
	        0=Cite
		1=Full
		2=KWIC

The easiest way to construct a parameter string is to run the
search from the main dialog, save it to the search list, and
then copy everything after the "=" character from the
[SavedSearchList] entry in the LEXIS-GA.INI file in the
Windows directory.

A maximum of 80 characters can be placed on the command line
following the OLCLINK command. Running from the Windows Run
dialog truncates the command line string at 80 characters.
Sending a long command string using the shell command from
Visual Basic leads to an illegal function call.

Citations example:

C|Jul 19 1995|CLIENT|300 US 1|1|Any|VIEWS 3.1
autosubmit: substitute H for C
