December 19, 1995 WorkFlo/Print 3.0.0 (Windows NT) Be Aware Notes

GENERAL NOTES

Where to Begin?

Please read this entire file before installing WorkFlo/Print!
It contains important notes which didn't make it into the printed
documentation, or notes which require extra emphasis.

Pay special attention to the section entitled "BEFORE YOU INSTALL
        WORKFLO/PRINT".

Questions about Your WorkFlo/Print Server?

If you have any questions about your WorkFlo/Print Server, please
contact your FileNet customer support representative.

Downloading Printer Drivers and/or Network Card Drivers from Microsoft

If your printer driver or network card is not listed, you may
check with the Microsoft Download services to see if there is a
driver available. See the file WNTDL.TXT which was downloaded
from Microsoft on 2/21/95. This file lists currently available
drivers and instructions on how to download the drivers. You may
also wish to look at this file to see if an updated version of a
particular driver is available. The file is copied to the print
server disk during installation: <Data File Root Directory>\sd,
where <Data File Root Directory> can be determined by clicking
the Options button on the main WorkFlo/Print Configuration screen.

Greek and Cyrillic Font Support

Greek and Cyrillic font support is available in WorkFlo/Print 3.0.
However, the fonts have NOT been formally qualified by FileNet
Engineering at the time of initial release. If you require Greek
or Cyrillic fonts at your site, you may require additional fixes
from FileNet to achieve full functionality.

BEFORE YOU INSTALL WORKFLO/PRINT

You Must Be Logged On to Windows NT with Administrator Privileges

Administrator privileges are required to perform certain Setup tasks.

You Must Install the TCP/IP Protocol

You can install this protocol via the Network icon on the
        Control Panel.

You May Need to Install the DLC Protocol

Refer to the section entitled "HP LaserJet Network Connectivity".

You Must Configure the Image Management Server (IMS) First

When you configure the print server, it polls the IMS to determine
which printer queues address the print server. Thus, the IMS must
be configured BEFORE running WorkFlo/Print Setup or Configuration.

If You Are Unable to Configure Your Printer on the IMS

Your IMS release may not yet allow you to specify the latest
printers supported by WorkFlo/Print. This may include printers
such as the HP LaserJet 5Si MX, HP Color LaserJet, or JRL 1220D.
If this is the case, please select the "Other" printer and
configure the appropriate paper sizes. On later releases of the
IMS software, "Other" will be replaced by "Generic <printer type>",
where <printer type> specifies the class of printer, such as
        "PostScript Level 2".

If You Wish to Use a Generic PostScript Level 2 Printer with WorkFlo/Print

FileNet does not guarantee complete support for all generic
PostScript Level 2 printers at this time. Please read the section
entitled "Minimal Support Provided for Generic PostScript Level 2
Printers" under the GENERIC POSTSCRIPT LEVEL 2 PRINTER-SPECIFIC
        NOTES section.

If You Are Updating a Previous Release of WorkFlo/Print 2.x.x or later

If Setup detects a version of WorkFlo/Print 2.x.x or later
already installed on the print server, it displays a dialog that
allows you to do an "Update" or "Reinstall". If you select
"Update", the Welcome screen displays and the Setup proceeds
like normal. New files are copied over the existing files.
        This is the default.

If you select "Reinstall", another dialog is displayed to
make sure that you want to delete the current WorkFlo/Print
configuration and emulate an initial installation.

This allows you to clean up your system, so that Setup will
emulate an initial installation when it continues. You can
reinstall your print server when the system is deemed unusable,
or when a later release of WorkFlo/Print requires a clean
configuration. You must not delete items manually in the
Registry, unless directed to do so by FileNet.

Note that, in preparation for the reinstall, Setup does NOT:
        - delete any files from the print server's hard disk
        - remove the Administrator icon from the Startup group
        - modify any PATH settings

KNOWN LIMITATIONS AND PROBLEMS FOR ALL PRINTERS

Errors Occur During Automatic Startup of WorkFlo/Print (STR 31667)

If you added the WorkFlo/Print Administrator program icon to the
NT Startup group, you may receive errors during initialization.
These errors usually occur in one, or both, of the following
        scenarios:
        1. You are auto-logging onto NT (i.e. bypassing the NT logon screen)
        2. You have installed software for printing to Ricoh and/or Large
Document printers, and you have the required printer controller
            boards installed.

The basic problem is caused because the Windows NT operating system
and Windows NT system services have not completed initializing
before the WorkFlo/Print Administrator program tries to initialize.

To solve this problem, please type: WFPAUTO /?
and follow the steps described in the displayed help text.

Maximum Limit of Active Printer Queues on one Print Server

The maximum number of queues you can configure on the print
server is 128. However, you will likely not be able to have this
maximum number of queues active at the same time. There is a
decrease in printer performance for each additional queue that
        is active.

You may experience interruptions in printing when you are
submitting a high volume of jobs simultaneously to multiple
printer queues on the same print server. When this occurs, Print
Services will likely show some printers as being down or
unavailable. You may resume these printers using the "resume"
command in PRI_tool on the IMS. Alternatively, you can decrease
the volume of jobs being submitted simultaneously to the printer
queues. This is a limitation of the networking software. A fix
will be provided once the solution has been identified.

WorkFlo/Print Cannot Initialize when Queues Configured on Multiple IMS's

You can configure queues on multiple IMS systems to address this
same print server. The WorkFlo/Print Administrator initializes
itself by establishing communications with the Default IMS first.
All other IMS systems, on which your queues are configured, must
be running the same release of IMS software (or later) as the
default IMS. Otherwise, you may see the following in one of the
        queue windows of the Administrator:

Unable to log onto Print Services.

And, the following may appear in the Administrator Error Log:

<92,2,2> PSMl: Error logging onto Print Services 2

So, for example, if your default IMS is running 3.2.1 software,
the other IMS systems must be running 3.2.1 or later. In addition,
you must insure that all other IMS systems have proper security
        access to the default IMS.

The Allied Telesis Driver Does Not Work

You Must Use the AMD Driver that comes with Windows NT. This is a
known limitation with Windows NT 3.1. We do not know if it is a
limitation with Windows NT 3.5 or later.

Some Network Cards are Not Supported with the Current Windows NT Release

Madge Token Ring drivers may not be provided with your Window NT
release. FileNet has a supplemental driver available which must be
        installed as "Other Driver".

If your network card is not listed, you may check with the
Microsoft Download services to see if there is a driver available.
See the above discussion under GENERAL NOTES.

Setting Up the Network Card During NT Installation

It is highly recommended that you know the settings of your network
card BEFORE you install Windows NT.

However, if you are uncertain of the network card settings at the
time you install NT, it is better to skip the network card setup.
You can go back after the NT installation is complete and setup the
network card then. If the network card settings are wrong during
installation, the NT installation will hang and must be totally
        restarted.

Changing Date and Time

When changing the Date and/or Time in the NT Control Panel, the
WorkFlo/Print Administrator must be restarted in order for the new
Date/Time to affect printing. WorkFlo/Print uses the Date/Time
and time zone information when printing header pages. Please set
        the time zone appropriately.

Part, or All, of a Text File Prints With Landscape Orientation (STR 33477)

If the print server software detects a line in the text file to
be greater than the width of the portrait page, then the entire
page on which that line appears will print in Landscape orientation.
All pages that follow may print in Landscape as well.
This problem is a side effect to the implementation of SEP 2380.

To have all pages of the text file print in Portrait orientation,
make sure all lines in the file fit the width of the page. The
typical width of a Letter page is around 80 characters.

To have all pages of the text file print in Landscape orientation,
make sure at least one line on the first page is longer than the
width of the page. This will put the first page, and all subsequent
        pages, into Landscape.

Annotation Text Too Long

If the annotation text is too long to fit the width of the page,
the text will get truncated. The text will not wrap.

COLD Documents Print Incorrectly When Using Exact Scaling

If the COLD background template is not at the page origin (0,0),
then the print server software will always print the document
using Original Size scaling. This is done for backwards
compatibility with FDOS print server software, and it preserves
the text alignment on the template.

You can select a scaling value to be used for all COLD documents
via the Advanced Options dialogs in WorkFlo/Print Configuration.
If you want all queues to use this scaling value, select Options
from the main configuration dialog, then select the Advanced button.
If you want only a specific queue to use the scaling value, then
configure the desired queue, select the Options button, then
select the Advanced button on the next dialog.

Duplex Printing with Multiple Documents in the Same Print Request (STR 33244)

When you specify duplex (or two-sided) printing for a print
request that has multiple documents in it, each subsequent
document may not start on a new (i.e. odd-numbered) page.
The first page of such documents may print on the back side of
the last page which preceded it (from the previous document
in the job). If you want each document to start on a new page,
you must request Document Headers for the print request.

"This queue is now terminated" Displays in an Administrator Queue Window

If WorkFlo/Print terminated a queue for some reason and displayed
the above message, then you cannot currently restart the queue.
You must correct any problems which contributed to the termination,
then exit and restart the Administrator program.

KNOWN LIMITATIONS AND PROBLEMS FOR RICOH AND LARGE DOCUMENT PRINTERS

All Installed Controller Boards Must Be Configured by WorkFlo/Print

Starting with the WorkFlo/Print 3.0 release, you can now install
more than one controller board in your print server PC. However,
it is mandatory that you configure all of the boards via the
WorkFlo/Print Configuration program. This applies even if all
the boards are not currently in use. So, if three boards are
installed, you must configure all three boards. Otherwise,
        unexpected results may occur.

You can access the controller board configuration dialog by
configuring the desired Ricoh or Large Document printer queue,
then selecting the Configure button in the Printer Controller
        Specification group.

"Error Opening File QFONTS.QPS" Gets Logged in the Windows NT Event Viewer

The following message in the Event Viewer is a warning only and
        can be ignored:

The description for Event ID (0) in Source (QscriptServer)
could not be found. It contains the following insertion
string(s): QscriptServer error: 0, Error opening the file
	  C:\FNSW\driver\QFONTS.QPS for Qscript0.

The controller software is attempting to open the file QFONTS.QPS
to see if it exists. If so, it contains the names of font files
that should be download to the RAM disk. However, the file should
not be resident on your hard disk unless you installed Kanji fonts.
The Qscript driver on the print server is returning the error in
response to the "file open" request sent from the controller
        software.

HP LASERJET PRINTER-SPECIFIC NOTES

Job Prints to Wrong Tray when Paper Runs Out in Selected Tray (STR 30247)

If you select a tray for the print job, and that tray is pulled
out or empty, then the HP LaserJet printers will print to
another tray provided that the other tray contains the same paper
size. This is an artifact of the printer itself. This feature
cannot be overridden by software. Please consult the HP LaserJet
User Manual for alternatives such as "Reserving or Locking-out
Cassettes". This allows you to avoid automatic tray switching
        to a "locked out" tray.

PRTIMG Returns Error when the WorkFlo/Print Administrator is Running

When TCP Direct printer connectivity is configured, PRTIMG.EXE
only works when the WorkFlo/Print Administrator is not running.
If the Administrator is running, you may see messages in the
Administrator window indicating errors such as 0xcf150006
        <207,21,6> while downloading font files.

HP LaserJet Network Connectivity

The DLC protocol must be installed if the Print Manager printer is
configured to communicate with the HP LaserJet over the network.
DLC is not routable, so if the print server and HP LaserJet are on
different network segments, TCP Direct Port connectivity is
recommended (see other HP LaserJet Network Connectivity notes below).

If the HP LaserJet network address is not detected when setting up
the Print Manager Queue, then there may be problems on the network.

HP LaserJet Network Connectivity (Ethernet and Token Ring JetDirect cards)

If your WorkFlo/Print server is separated by a router from the
HP LaserJet printer on JetDirect, you cannot use Print Manager
network connectivity. The DLC protocol is required for such
connectivity, and DLC is not routable. You must select an
alternate connectivity such as TCP Direct, or Print Manager
        parallel port connectivity (if possible).

NOTE: If you select TCP Direct connectivity in this configuration,
and your LaserJet uses a Token Ring JetDirect card, then you
must have the HP Token Ring JetDirect card Series J2555 or
later. This card supports TCP/IP. If you purchased your HP
Token Ring JetDirect card after May 1994, then your card
should be correct. Please contact HP if necessary.

HP LaserJet 4MV Printer Connectivity

At the time Windows NT 3.5 was released, there was no printer
driver for this printer model. If you wish to use Print Manager
connectivity, you may obtain this driver by calling FileNet
Customer Support, or by calling Microsoft directly.
See the above discussion under GENERAL NOTES.

In the meantime, you can select an alternate driver in Print
Manager, or use TCP Direct connectivity instead.

The HP LaserJet 4MV driver is available in Windows NT 3.51.

Printer Times Out when Using TCP Direct Port Connectivity

The TCP/IP Timeout should be set to 90 seconds on the HP LaserJet
        printer control panel.

Other Windows NT Client PC's Cannot Connect to WorkFlo/Print HP LaserJet

If you configure an HP LaserJet with Print Manager Connectivity,
and you specify an HP Network Peripheral Port in Print Manager,
you must specify "Job Based" rather than "Continuous" for the
Connection. Select the "Timers" button on the "Configure
Hewlett-Packard Network Peripheral Port" Print Manager dialog.

If you select "Continuous", then other Windows NT clients will
not be able to connect to the printer while WorkFlo/Print is
printing to it. The printer will indicate a "Busy" status.

HP LaserJet 4M Connection Failure

The HP LaserJet 4M only supports one network protocol at a time.
If you change the Printer Connectivity from Print Manager (DLC)
to TCP Direct Port (or vice-versa), then you must also change the
network settings on the control panel of the printer.
This is not a problem with the HP LaserJet 4M Plus or 4Si MX since
both of these printers support multiple protocols simultaneously.

PostScript Error Pages Print Due to Missing Fonts

If an HP LaserJet printer is turned off then back on again, all
fonts get erased from printer memory. You must manually download
the fonts again. Click the mouse on the appropriate queue window
for the printer, then select the Download Fonts option from the
Tools menu of the WorkFlo/Print Administrator.

Alternatively, new in WorkFlo/Print 3.0, you can change the
frequency of the "Automatically Download" option on the Fonts
dialog in WorkFlo/Print Configuration to "Beginning of Each Job".

If you use TCP Direct connectivity, WorkFlo/Print can detect
whether or not the fonts are already present in printer memory
and won't download them unless necessary. For other connectivities,
where font detection is not possible, there will be a performance
impact. The fonts will always be downloaded at the beginning of
        each job.

Dialog Box Appears to Hang After Cancelling Manual Font Download

You can manually download fonts via the WorkFlo/Print Administrator
Options menu. If you cancel the font download while it is in
progress, there may be a slight delay before the displayed dialog
goes away. The font download aborts successfully. You may simply
need to wait a moment for the "cancel" dialog to clear itself.

Printing Performance is Slow

HP LaserJets may be configured using several different connectivities.
Print Manager connectivity is recommended (using a networked DLC
connection if possible). TCP Direct Port connectivity should be
used if the print server cannot communicate with the printer
without TCP/IP routing. Other/Parallel Port connectivity should
only be used if no other option is available.

Also, Raw Binary image data encoding is most efficient if the
printer supports the TBCP protocol used with this encoding.
You can verify support for this protocol by searching for "TBCP"
in the printer's PPD (PostScript Printer Description) file.
ASCII 85 is the second most efficient encoding, followed by ASCII
Hex. These ASCII encodings provide better portability of the
generated PostScript files, and easier editability for debugging.
However, they increase the amount of data sent to the printer
        which slows down printing.

Missing "Avail papersizes" in PRI_tool

The "Avail papersizes" do not display in PRI_tool for HP LaserJet
printers. This list of paper sizes represents the currently loaded
sizes in the printer. This list does display for Ricoh printers.

FDOS Merge Forms Get Clipped

FDOS Merge Forms may not fit on the page. They may be clipped
because the printer's imaging region (printable area) is smaller
        than the physical paper size.

PostScript "timeout" or "ioerror" Error Pages

If you are printing large-sized, or highly dense, documents to
an HP LaserJet, you may get a "timeout" or "ioerror" page.
This often occurs because the PostScript interpreter is waiting
for data from the print server, but the print server is taking
too long processing the data. Thus, the interpreter times out
waiting for the data. You can try running Configuration, and
increasing the Wait Timeout value for the given print queue.

GENERIC POSTSCRIPT LEVEL 2 PRINTER-SPECIFIC NOTES

Minimal Support Provided for Generic PostScript Level 2 Printers

You can configure a Generic PostScript Level 2 printer via the
Printer Model list on the main WorkFlo/Print Configuration screen.
However, WorkFlo/Print provides only minimal support for such
printers. It does NOT support all features and functionality for
every PostScript Level 2 printer on the market.

If you wish to have full support for a specific printer model,
please file a Request for Proposal Quote (RPQ) through the
        appropriate FileNet personnel.

Supported Paper Sizes and Paper Trays

Each Generic PostScript Level 2 printer uses its own internal
codes for selecting the desired tray for printing. WorkFlo/Print
only provides minimal support for such printers, and does not
maintain a list of all possible tray-selection codes. So, when
you print to a Generic PostScript Level 2 printer, the job will
always print to the default paper/tray set on the printer itself.

In other words, WorkFlo/Print does not send any specific tray
selection instructions to the printer. The job simply prints to
the printer's default. The Media you specified in the WorkFlo/Print
Configuration program will have no impact on the job destination.

If you know that your printer is fully compatible with a specific
HP LaserJet printer, then you can configure your queue with that
HP printer model, and specify the media accordingly. By "fully
compatible", we mean that the tray-selection codes must exactly
match those for the specified HP LaserJet.

If you configure the generic printer as a supported HP LaserJet,
then you must also edit the NT Registry to specify whether each
paper size is fed through the tray in Portrait or Landscape
orientation. Details are provided in the WorkFlo/Print Installation
        Guide.

        NOTE:
This specification applies to all queues on this system that are
configured as that specific HP LaserJet model. So, if you have
configured multiple printers with that HP LaserJet model, and they
have different paper size orientation in their trays, you will
likely see rotation and/or scaling problems on some of the printers.

Images Print with Incorrect Imaging Region

Internal imaging regions are modeled after the HP LaserJet 4MV, so
you may see slight clipping or other image adjustments when printing
to Generic PostScript printers with significantly different imaging
        regions.

No Printer Driver is Available

If your printer driver is not listed, you may check with the
Microsoft Download services to see if there is a driver available.
See the above discussion under GENERAL NOTES.

RICOH PRINTER-SPECIFIC NOTES

Eject Tray Switching Does Not Occur after the Correct Number of Pages

WorkFlo/Print switches to another eject tray after printing the
specified number of pages to the current eject tray. If you
reboot the print server, the counter gets reset and WorkFlo/Print
starts counting again from 0. The software does not take into
account the number of pages left over in the eject tray. Thus,
you should remove all paper from the eject trays before rebooting
        the print server.

Wrong Paper Tray is Selected when Auto-Tray Switching

Make sure that you don't have multiple trays loaded with the
same paper size in different orientations. For example, you must
not have both Letter Portrait and Letter Landscape loaded at the
same time when printing with Best Available. This confuses the
print engine when it determines that Letter is the best size.

LARGE DOCUMENT PRINTER-SPECIFIC NOTES

Selecting Unloaded Paper Size on the 3M 689

If a paper size is selected that is not loaded in the printer,
the printer will hang forever until the requested paper size is
loaded. There is no known work around for this, so it is best
	to avoid it.

Missing "Avail papersizes" in PRI_tool

The "Avail papersizes" do not display in PRI_tool for Large Document
printers. This list of paper sizes represents the currently loaded
sizes in the printer. This list does display for Ricoh printers.
