NORTON ANTIVIRUS NOTES
***************************************************************************
This README.TXT file covers compatibility information, late-breaking news,
and usage tips for Norton AntiVirus Scanner for Windows NT. The following
topics are discussed:

 * VIRSPEC.TXT
 * Online documentation (NAVNTSCN.PDF)
 * Access privileges required for installation
 * Short File Name (SFN) alias generation during install
 * Using the /INTERACTIVE switch with the AT command to schedule scans
 * Changing priority for scheduled scans
 * Scanning corrupted ZIP files

VIRSPEC.TXT
-----------
In addition to README.TXT, Norton AntiVirus Scan for Windows NT provides
a file called VIRSPEC.TXT, which is located in the folder where Norton
AntiVirus is installed.

VIRSPEC.TXT contains information about viruses that cause unique problems
and require special handling, as well as statistics about recent virus
outbreaks. Please refer to this file for important instructions about the
One Half virus and other special cases.

The VIRSPEC.TXT file is updated monthly by Symantec. The new version is
distributed with an updated virus definitions file, which Norton AntiVirus
uses to catch newly discovered viruses. See Chapter 5, "Keeping Up with
New Viruses," in the User's Guide for information on how to get the
updates.

Online documentation (NAVNTSCN.PDF)
-----------------------------------
If you downloaded Norton AntiVirus Scanner for Windows NT, online
documentation is available from the same location. The documentation
file, called "NAVNTSCN.PDF," is viewed using an application called
"Acrobat Reader."

If necessary, you can also download Acrobat Reader from the same
location.

Access privileges required for installation
-------------------------------------------
As part of Norton AntiVirus installation, shared Symantec files, which
are a component of all Symantec products, are always installed to the
\win32app\symantec folder -- even if a custom location has been
specified for the Norton AntiVirus program files. If you do not have
write privileges for this folder, the install will fail.

Make sure that you have create/write privileges to the \win32app\symantec
folder on the drive where you are installing Norton AntiVirus.

Short File Name (SFN) alias generation during install
-----------------------------------------------------
If you are installing Norton AntiVirus to a custom location that is a
Long File Name (LFN) folder, SFN alias generation must not be disabled
during the install. To re-enable SFN alias generation, run REGEDT32 and
change the following registry key entry:

  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem

NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation, the name for the registry key, should be
set to 0 to enable SFN alias generation.

Set the value back to 1 after installation to disable SFN alias generation,
if desired.

Using the /INTERACTIVE switch with the AT command to schedule scans
-------------------------------------------------------------------
You MUST use the /INTERACTIVE switch to schedule scans with the AT command.
If N32SCANW is launched from the Windows NT Scheduling Service (AT)
without the /INTERACTIVE switch, Norton AntiVirus remains in memory with no
way of terminating. For example, to schedule automatic scans three times
per week:

 at 17:30 /interactive /every:M,W,F "c:\win32app\navnt\n32scanw" /L

See your Windows NT documentation for more information on using the AT
command.

Changing priority for scheduled scans
-------------------------------------
Windows NT distributes CPU time based on a priority class. By default,
Norton AntiVirus is set to the NORMAL class. If you want to change the
priority for scheduled scans, use the AT command to schedule the scan
and use the START command to run Norton AntiVirus and set the priority.
For example, to schedule low priority scans every friday evening:

 at 17:30 /interactive /every:F start /low "c:\win32app\navnt\n32scanw" /L

See your Windows NT documentation for more information on using the START
and AT commands.

Scanning corrupted ZIP files
----------------------------
Norton AntiVirus may not be able to complete a scan if a corrupted ZIP
file is encountered. If an Application Error is reported, repair the
corrupted ZIP file using PKZIPFIX, exclude the file from future scans,
or delete the corrupted ZIP file.
