Welcome To Norton Navigator
---------------------------

    Introducing Norton Navigator
    ----------------------------
After installing Norton Navigator, if you have any questions
about its features, or don't quite understand a component,
take a minute to look through Introducing Norton Navigator.
It is a quick tour that explains Norton Navigator and what
    it can do for you.

Choose Norton Navigator from the Start menu Programs list,
and click Welcome to Norton Navigator. Then, in the dialog
    box that appears, click Introducing.

File Manager
------------

    Norton Undo and Unerase.
    -----------------------
If Norton Utilities for Windows 95 is installed, both Norton
Undo and the unerase capabilities in Norton File Manager will
use the Norton Protected Recycle Bin to recover deleted
files. If Norton Utilites for Windows 95 is not installed,
Undo and unerase will use either the Recycle Bin or DOS to
    recover deleted files.

    Viewing Files.
    -------------
To view files with Norton File Manager, you must install
Quick View for Windows 95 file viewing support. Quick
View is included in the Accessories group on the CD
    version of Windows 95.

If you installed Windows 95 from floppy disks and do not
have Quick View in the Accessories list, contact Microsoft
to find out how to get the Quick View files.

If you installed Windows 95 from a CD, follow these
instructions to add Quick View support:

1 In the Windows 95 Control Panel, choose Add/Remove Programs
      and select Windows Setup.

2 Select Accessories in the list box and click Details to
      see all available accessory programs.

3 Check Quick View and close the accessory program list.

4 Click OK to copy the Quick View files to your disk.

NOTE: Even with Quick View installed, you still will not be
able to view files with formats such as GIF and JPEG.

To view files with these formats, install Quick View
Plus, which you purchase from Inso Corporation.
See "Upgrading File Viewers" on the Norton File
Manager Help menu for more information.

    Viewer pane.
    -----------
In this version of Norton Navigator, Auto-View has been
replaced by an improved Viewer Pane command. The Viewer
Pane appears in the bottom section of the File Manager
window and displays the selected file.

    Formatting disks and DMF formatting.
    -----------------------------------
This version of Norton Navigator lets you use DMF
(Distribution Media Format) to format and copy disks.

DMF is a special format that is readable by Windows 95 and
Windows NT systems, originally used by Microsoft. On a
DMF-formatted disk more of the disk surface is available
for data. The tracks are not narrower. The larger capacity
is obtained by putting more sectors on each track.

Because this format is intended for software distribution
disks, which contain only one or two entries at the root
level, only 16 or fewer files or subdirectories are
permitted at the root level of a DMF-formatted floppy disk.

To put more than 16 files on a DMF-formatted disk, create
a subdirectory, and copy the files there.

If the Norton format utility does not work on your system,
change to the folder where you installed Norton Navigator
and rename the file S32BFMT.VXD to S32BFMT.OLD. Norton File
Manager and Norton Copy Disk will now use Windows 95 format.

NOTE: Although the system is not responsive during floppy
disk formatting, background processes will continue.

    Connecting to FTP sites.
    -----------------------
Before you can connect to FTP sites from Norton File Manager,
    you need:

1 A connection to the Internet.
You can connect through Ethernet to an Internet
server on a network to which you are attached, or you can
use a dialup PPP or SLIP account from an Internet provider
and connect by modem to the Internet provider's server.

You must actually be connected to an Internet server at
the time you use Norton File Manager to connect to an FTP
      site

    2 A 32-bit version of WINSOCK.
WINSOCK is a TCP/IP stack that Windows uses to communicate
      with a network.

If you are using the version of WINSOCK supplied by
Windows 95, you are using a 32-bit WINSOCK.DLL. If you
are using a different WINSOCK.DLL, make sure it is 32-bit.
Norton File Manager FTP connections do not work with
      16-bit WINSOCK DLLs.

Norton Long File Name Enabler and Norton File Assist
----------------------------------------------------

    Norton Long File Name Enabler.
    -----------------------------
Fully supports applications that use the Microsoft standard
Win16 common dialog boxes. If an application does not use
common dialog boxes, or is using them in a non-standard way,
some LFN functionality may be disabled or missing. Norton
LFN Enabler will do its best to allow the use of long file
names with that application. For example, long file names
might not be displayed in the file and folder list but you
might still be able to enter then as names for files.

    Norton File Assist.
    ------------------
Fully supports all Microsoft Win16 and Win32 common dialog
boxes. As with Norton LFN Enabler, if an application uses
common dialog boxes in a non-standard way, some
functionality may be disabled or missing.

Changing LFN and File Assist for specific dialog boxes.
    ------------------------------------------------------
The parameters for File Assist and LFN behavior described
on pages 110 - 112 in the Norton Navigator User's Guide are
    no longer valid.

To perform these operations for individual dialog boxes
in version 95.0b of Norton Navigator, download FACFG95B.ZIP
(File Assist configure utility) from any online Symantec
    forum.

The previous version of FACFG does not work in version
    95.0b.

User Profiles
-------------

This version of Norton Navigator provides support for
    user profiles.

Changes made to one user profile configuration do not change
other user profile configurations. This means that if one
user uninstalls Norton Navigator, the default desktops of
all other Norton Taskbar users will be the desktops that
were open when they last exited from Windows 95.

To change the desktop folder manually for a user, follow
    these steps:

1 Login as the user whose desktop you want to change.

2 Run REGEDIT and find this key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
      \Explorer\Shell Folders

3 Change the String Value "Desktop" for this key to refer to
the folder the user wants to use as the desktop.
For example, you might change the key to

      C:\WINDOWS\PROFILES\JOHNSMITH\DESKTOP

    4 Find the key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
      \Explorer\User Shell Folders

and change the String Value "Desktop" for this key to
      match the other key.

    5 Exit from REGEDIT.

UnInstall
---------
To uninstall Norton Navigator, open the Windows 95 Control
    Panel and choose Add/Remove Programs.

Select Norton Navigator from the list of programs you can
remove. This is the new preferred interface for
    uninstalling programs.

Electronic Registration
-----------------------

If you did not complete electronic registration when you
installed Norton Navigator, you can still register
electronically. Choose Welcome to Norton Navigator from
the Start menu Program list for Norton Navigator. In the
Welcome dialog box, click Online Registration.
