        --------------------------------------------------------------

All files necessary for ShowGIF's operation are contained in
self-extracting SHWGIF55.EXE. If ShowGIF is not contained in
the self extractor, it may have been modified or infected with
a virus. Any files not contained within SHWGIF55.EXE are not
necessary for ShowGIF's operation and may be deleted at your
        disgression.

        --------------------------------------------------------------

Many people have contacted me with various problems they have
experienced with SHOWGIF. This is the list of things I usually
tell them to try. You may be able to save yourself the cost of
long distance phone call by trying some of these simple suggestions.

        - If you used CSHOWGIF's autodetect function, double check to make
sure that it selected the right card. If it didn't than change it.

        - If your card has a VESA driver, please try installing it
_BEFORE_ SHOWGIF. Your OEM's code is probably better
          than mine.

        - If your card is not supported by SHOWGIF, try installing
          your VESA driver before SHOWGIF.

        - Try a different terminal program (Qmodem is known to work well)

        - Try a different protocol/protocol driver (if you use an external
          protocol such as DSZ)

        - Try disabling 360x480x256 mode. This really isn't necessary if
you have a superVGA board. You can disable it by using the delete
          mode option in CSHOWGIF.

If you have a high speed modem (v.32, v.32bis, HST, 2400 with
built in error correction [ARQ/MNP4/v.42]), please check the
following if you are experiencing CPS loss:

        - Make sure hardware handshaking is enabled in your terminal program
(usually called RTS/CTS or RTS). RTS during write should be
OFF in qmodem. It will NOT slow down your transfers if your
          modem is set up properly

        - Only if your terminal doesn't have a high speed modem, enable
handshaking in SHOWGIF with the /f:x switch (where x is the
port number your modem is connected)

        - Make sure hardware handshaking is enabled in your modem.
On many it is the "&H1" command. Consult your modem's
manual. If it is disabled, enable it either in your terminal's
modem setup string or write it into your modem's NRAM with the
          "&W" command.

If all else fails, try configuring ShowGIF to a standard VGA

        --------------------------------------------------------------

I'd like to make the following request:

If you find a particular terminal program or a particular
GIF (especially a particular GIF) that causes ShowGIF to lock up
consistantly, I'd like to have it in order to resolve any
        incompatibilities.

        --------------------------------------------------------------

        Two final notes:

        - The autodetect will not properly detect PARADISE cards,
PARADISE people have to enter the chipset by hand

        - ShowGIF doesn't support the Trident 8800BR's 128k page frame.
This is presant only on the older Trident boards. If 8800CS
doesn't work, I'm afraid that your stuck with standard VGA.

        --------------------------------------------------------------

        Use of SHOWGIF with HS/link:

If you are experiencing unreliable transfers with HS/link, try
enabling slow handshaking in either the configuration (last
line on the first page) or in the command line (-HS). If you
have a high speed modem (either 9600 or 2400 MNP) consider
        disabling XON/XOFF (-HX).

For best results in terms of viewing the GIF, disable I/O
buffering (-NB). This may have a negative effect on throughput,
so try it either way to determine which is better for you.
