Installation:

This documents all the changes that the Kudo installer makes when installing
Kudo Image Browser:

- Application files are copied to the target directory, typically c:\kudo

- The installer searches for the Microsoft OLE 2.0 DLLs on your machine. Three
things can happen as a result of this search:

	1) If they are found (as the result of someone having installed
another OLE 2.0 compliant application), and they are of the same or
a newer version as the copies that Kudo is shipped with, then nothing
	is done.

	2) If they are found but are of an older version than the
copies Kudo is shipped with, then the Kudo installer will copy its
newer versions over the existing ones, wherever it might find them
	on your machine.

	3) If they are not found, Kudo places new copies of all the OLE 2.0
	DLLs into your windows\system directory.

The OLE 2.0 DLLs are functionally an extension to the Windows 3.1 operating
system, and so are effectively not a part of Kudo at all. This means that,
once installed, they are available for all applications that support OLE 2.0,
and need not be installed more than once. Other OLE 2.0 compliant applications
will generally observe this convention, and will not duplicate these files in
their installation if they are already present. For this reason, if you
un-install Kudo, it may be risky to remove these files unless you are certain
there are not other applications that rely on them. The OLE 2.0 DLLs are:

	ole2.dll
	ole2conv.dll
	ole2disp.dll
	ole2nls.dll
	ole2prox.dll
	compobj.dll
	storage.dll

- An additional DLL, BWCC.DLL is installed following an identical procedure
to the OLE DLLs. This file fills a support function and is shipped with
many applications.

- The Kudo installer determines if it needs to modify AUTOEXEC.BAT. You will
be prompted before it modifies the file. If you agree to modification, the
line:
	SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100

will be added to AUTOEXEC.BAT. If there is already a line present that loads
SHARE, then that line will be modified to ensure that the /L and /F options
are at least as large as the amount that Kudo requires.

- The Kudo installer then registers Kudo as an application with Windows,
and takes care of registering OLE 2.0 on your machine. Effectively, this
modifies the registration database, REG.DAT, in your windows directory, and
indirectly, your WIN.INI file. It is accomplished by running REGEDIT.EXE
with the files OLE2.REG and KUDO.REG, which are installed to your target Kudo
directory. This operation can be repeated manually if REG.DAT ever becomes
corrupted, see tech note file "REGEDIT.TXT".

Known Installation Problems:

Two situations have been observed to cause problems with the installer:

1) Installing to a PC that is configured as a diskless workstation can confuse
the installer as to the whereabouts of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. In this
situation, the installer generally cannot access your boot drive. When the
installer attempts to modify your autoexec file, it will probably come
up with a path to an AUTOEXEC.BAT that doesn't exist, such as A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT.
If this happens, you will need to make the modifications yourself. Select
the option to NOT have the Kudo installer modify your autoexec file, and
then, after the installation is complete, manually add the line:
		<path>\SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100
to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. <path> is the full path to your DOS directory
(or wherever SHARE.EXE exists). The /L & /F options are suggested minimums.
If you are already loading SHARE in your autoexec, then you only need to
ensure that you add the command line options to the SHARE statement. If
the options are already there, and they are larger, then leave them alone.
If they are there but are smaller, then use the values suggested here.
You will need to reboot your computer for this change to take effect.

2) Installing to a network version of Windows can cause problems if the
user does not have write privileges to some of the Windows directories.
The Kudo installer may need to add some DLL's to your current windows\system
directory. This directory will often be on a networked drive that is read-
only when you are running a network version of Windows. You will get messages
to the effect of "Can't write to file ... due to read-only protection...", etc.
This indicates that you will need to have the network supervisor run the
installation in supervisor mode to obtain proper write access to the
necessary directories.

General notes:

Recursive Directory Scanning
----------------------------
When selecting the files for an Add/Update operation, entering anything under
File Name (except *.*) will disable sub directory searching. e.g. Entering *.BMP
for File Name will select all the files with a .BMP suffix that reside in the
selected directory, but will not select .BMP files that may reside in sub
directories of the selected directory.

Quark Place Module
----------------
For Quark 3.1.2. and 3.2B Drag & Drop, you must copy the file m_quark.xxt
(found in the directory where Kudo Image Browser was installed or on Disk 2)
to your Quark directory for Drag and Drop to work.

Test Color Images
------------------
We are always working to improve the color quality of the thumbnails
generated with Kudo Image Browser. To that end, we have included some
test images with this shipment. On Disk 2 you will find some sample image
files which represent a cross-section of color gradients and there is a
Kudo catalog for these images, SAMPLES.KDB, that is installed in your
kudo directory. If you suspect image quality problems with color, please
take the opportunity to view this catalog, and scan the test images
and report any anomalies back to us.

Support for Scitex (.CT) files
------------------------------
The Scitex image format is listed as a supported format in the manual and
online documentation, but is not available at this time.

Support for Microsoft AVI files and Apple QuickTime movies
----------------------------------------------------------
By default, Kudo is configured to ignore both video formats that it currently
supports - Microsoft Audio-Video Interleaved (.AVI) and Apple QuickTime movies
(.MOV). This is because Kudo requires the AVI and QuickTime drivers to be
present in order to read the respective file format. Without the drivers
available, Kudo would generate errors if it encountered an AVI or QuickTime
file.

For this release, it is assumed that users wishing to catalog these video
formats will already have the appropriate drivers installed. If you have these
drivers installed, you can simply uncomment the line that designates the
appropriate Kudo import filter from KUDO.INI (KUDO.INI is a configuration text
file appearing in the directory in which you installed Kudo). This is how those
lines appear in the default KUDO.INI file:

;;;;AVI - Microsoft Audio-Video Interleaved=filters\MAVI.FLT,AVI
;;;;MOV - Apple QuickTime Movie=filters\MMOV.FLT,.MOV

Using Windows notepad or any other text editor, simply remove the semi-colons
(';') that precede the appropriate line in order to enable Kudo to recognize
that format. To enable recognition of AVI files for example, uncomment the
AVI line as follows:

AVI - Microsoft Audio-Video Interleaved=filters\MAVI.FLT,AVI
;;;;MOV - Apple QuickTime Movie=filters\MMOV.FLT,.MOV

See "KUDOINI.TXT" for additional information about the KUDO.INI file.

Minimizing disk usage
---------------------
Kudo comes shipped with over 25 import filter files, which allow Kudo to read
an even greater number of image and multimedia file formats. Together, these
files consume almost 2 megabytes of disk space. If you wish to conserve disk
space, and don't need to catalog all of the supported file types, you may be
able to remove some of these files.

Refer to the file KUDOINI.TXT for a complete description of how Kudo is
configured to recognize file types. This is documented under the section
[KudoImageBrowserImports].

To determine which filter file is being used to import a particular file type,
open your KUDO.INI file up in a text editor, and find the entry under the
[KudoImageBrowserImports] section that lists the file extension you are
interested in omitting. That line will specify a path to the filter file that
is used to import that file type. You can simply comment (by preceding with
semi-colons - ';') or remove that line from the KUDO.INI file, then delete the
import filter that was specified on that line.

You may delete SAMPLES.KDB from your kudo directory as well to save additional space.

***************************************************************************************
Here is a list of the known problems:

- The installer may have problems on some network systems. See "Installation problems"
above.

- Scrolling of the catalog window continues past the end of the thumbnail display.

- The image quality of the thumbnails may be dependent upon the video board in
use when cataloging. In particular, catalog quality may be reduced for certain images
if you are running with less than a 256 color video card.

- RLE compressed bitmaps are not currently supported.

- Selecting a video driver resolution with large fonts, may force text into the
thumbnail borders.

- If thumbnails have been marked as deleted and the system crashes or is turned
off, the deleted thumbnails will still be marked as deleted. To clear them from
the catalog, they (the thumbnails) must be undeleted and then redeleted.

- When multiple files are dropped onto Kudo from File Manager, the Add/Update
process handles the files individually instead of as a group. This has two
undesirable side effects:
   * The Add/Update dialog does not show the previous image updated
   * The "Stop" button only applies to the current image being processed

- The "Info" dialogue does not repaint itself after being minimized.

- Partial covering and uncovering of the "Notes" area of a selected thumbnail,
will sometimes gray the uncovered portion of the "Notes" area.

- When multiple catalogs are tiled, the status bar does not correctly display the
number of images found.

- The "Info" dialogue window stays on top even when other applications are overlaying
Kudo.

- When a user attempts to open a catalog that is in use by another user, the wrong
message is displayed. The message "File is not a Kudo Catalog. . ." is displayed
instead of the "Catalog in use. . ." message.

- When double clicking a thumbnail that is associated with a program that no longer
exists or is not available, the message "WinExec failed error code=2" is displayed
instead of a more meaningful message.
